ADMISSION OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND RESIDENT ALIENS ENGLISH PROFICIENCY It is essential that students from other countri es be able to understand lectures in English and also be able to express their thoughts clearly in both written and spoken Engli sh. Admission to the Univers ity is based upon the und erstanding that students either already have or are actively making progress in these skills. In order that the app li cant 's proficiency in English may be determined, the applicant must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as administered by the Educational Testing Service at the nearest overseas examination center. The min imum score for admission is a total of 500 for the undergraduate student and 550 (with a score of 55 or above for each of the three test sections ) for the graduate student. In add iti on, all students whose native language is other than English will be given an English Placement Test at the University prior to or upon a change in program to determine which course(s) (English 103, 105, 107 or 109), if any, they must take. The course(s) must be taken during the student 's first semester in residence and every semester until the student has successfully passed the English Placement Test. Since admiss ion to the Un iversity is based on the understanding that the student will successful ly com plete the ESL sequence, students will not be allowed to graduate or continue at Biola if they do not com plete their ESL requirement. A "passing" score on the Engli sh Placement Test must be achi eved before taking English ll0A. English ll0A and B must be taken fo ll owing satisfactory compl etion of the above requirements .
