Other programs/ educational options are as follows: CREDENTIAL PROGRAMS Two levels of California teaching cre­ dentials-the PRELlMI 1 ARY CREDENTIAL and the PROFESSIONAL CLEAR CREDENTIAL-are available, as well as the AssOCIATION OF CHRJSTIAN SCHOOLS INTERNATIONAL CRE­ DENTIAL. Each is outlined below: PRELIMINARY CREDENTIAL PROGRAMS: In order to qualify for a Preliminary Teaching Credential with the State of California, a student must complete (1) an approved waiver program in a major lead­ ing to a baccalaureate degree, or pass the National Teacher's Examination (NTE) in the subject area and CLEP exam, if required, and (2) Professional Education courses including student teaching. Two types of credentials are avai lab le: Single Subject and Multiple Subject. A Single Subject Credential certifies the stu­ dent to teach a single subject from pre­ school through 12th grade, but is especial­ ly appropriate for grades 7-12. The Multiple Subject Credential certifies the student to teach in a self-contained class­ room from pre-school through 12th grade, but is especially appropriate for kinder­ garten through 6th grade. APPROVED MAJORS FOR SINGLE SUBJECT CREDENTIAL: Art, Biological Science (life science waiver program), English (English-com­ munication waiver program), History, lntercultural Studies, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Physical Science, Social Science. APPROVED MAJORS FOR M ULTI PLESUBJECT CREDENTIAL The Liberal Studies and Intercultural Studies, Diversified Waiver Programs are currently under revision. Students com­ pleting these programs Spring 1994 may be required to take the N.T.E. - General Knowledge . (See the Education Department for details. ) PROFESS IONAL EDUCATION COURSES REQUIRED: Students who wish to become candi­ dates for a teaching credential must apply for admission to the Education Program in their sophomore year or immediately upon transfer into the Un iversity if beyond

that year. A minimum grade point average of 2.5 is required. Other requirements of the Education Department and competen­ cies to be met are stated in the Guide for Students Entering the Teaching Profess ion, which may be obtained from the Education Department office. All candidates for the Preliminary Teaching Credential in Multiple Subject instruction must complete the following Education courses: 300,330,420, 430, 440,442 as we ll as the fo ll owing compe­ tency courses: ENGL 380, MATH 111, MUSC 310, and ARTS 306. All candidates for the Preliminary Teaching Credential in Single Subject instruction must complete the following education courses: 300, 330,425,435, 450, 452. In both programs, all education courses must be completed with grades at "C" or better prior to student teaching. Student Teaching must be completed with a grade of "B-" or better in order for the student to be recommended for a teach­ ing credentia l. All candidates must pass the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) prior to submitting their application for student teaching. PROFESSIONAL CLEAR CREDENTIAL PROGRAM In order to qualify for a Professional Clear Teaching Credential, a student must complete 30 units of courses in a pre­ approved program. The work must be complete within five years of receipt of the Pre liminary Credential. The Professional Clear Credential can be earned in one year of full time coursework. Undergraduate students who wish to become candidates for a Professional Clear Credential must be enrolled in an approved wa iver program, must be accept­ ed into the Education program, and must outline a credential program with the cre­ dential analyst. Post-degree student must be accepted into the School of Arts and Sciences and into the Education program before outlin­ ing a program leading to a Professional C lear Credential. Admission to the Professional Clear Credential program requires a minimum grade point average of 2.5 in an approved waiver program or passing scores in the CBEST and NTE exams. A transcript analysis fee may be requ ired.

THE FOLLO\XllNG COURSES ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL PROFESSIONAL CLEAR CREDENTIAL CANDIDATES: Health Science (Biology 300), Mainstreaming (Education 410 ), and Computers in the Classroom (Education 470). All students must demonstrate competence in the U.S. Constitution, writ­ ing, speech and hearing, and computer. Mu lti ple Subject Credential candidates must also d emonstrate competence in chi ldren's literature and elementary art, music, and mathematics. Other require­ ments vary with the type of program out­ lined, and may be obtained through the Education Department. Association of Christian Schools International Biola University is approved to grant Association of Christian Schools International Teaching certificates. The program is the same as for the Californ ia certificate except that Christian Philos­ ophy of Education (Ed ucation 560) must also be completed . COURSES 300 INTRODUCTION TO TEACHING (2) The structure and funct ion of the school qualities required for teacher effec­ tiveness, and contemporary issues in edu­ cation. A minimum of 30 hours of obser­ vation/participation in schools is required. Successful comp letion of this course constitutes one of the require­ ments for admission to the Preliminary Credential program. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing. 330 PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION (3) Application of psychological principles to the educative process, role of the teacher and learner, human growth and develop­ ment, learn ing styles, motivation, memory, transfer of learning, measurement and eval­ uation, research and experimentation in learning theory. This class is designed to fulfi ll the University's writing competency requirement. Prerequisite: 300, Psychology 200, approved consent, and formal app li ca­ tion into Education Department.
