CALIFORNIA SECONDARY TEACHING CREDENTIAL The History Department in coopera tion with the Education Department pro vides a secondary teaching program in Social Science. The general education requirement for United States history is History 200 and Psychology 200 for the Behavioral Science requriement. In the 37- unic Social Science waiver program the stu dents must take History 307,331,402,403; Political Science 200, 406, Geography 301, Sociology 342 and Business 201. Nine additional units of upper division electives round out the program. Required courses in Education are 300,330,425,435,450, and 452. Student Teaching is generally taken the semester after graduation.

OBJECTIVES The social science major is an interde partmental program offered by the depart ments of history, political science and soci ology. Upon completion of the social science major, it is intended that the stu dent will have a wider perspective on the nature of man ; recognize that his present perspective is based on the experi ences of history; be aware that value systems have definite implications for society as a whole; be able to think analytically and develop an und erstanding of, and a com mitment to, Christian values; have an awareness of his own social and political responsibilities; have an appreciation for the worth of a free society, and be pre pared for graduate study or career oppor tunities in education, law, the service pro fessions, research, business, government or Christian service. DEGREE PROGRAM A Bachelor of Arcs degree in Social Science is offered upon completion of the univers ity baccalaureate and major requirements. The social science major requires completion of 31 units, 24 of which must be upper division. The stu dent must choose a concentration of 15 units in History, Po litical Science or Sociology. Political Sci ence 200 and one additional 3 unit upper division course is required. The remaining units must be · from the various offerings in the social sci ences, such as intercultural studies, geog raphy and economics. Other opportuni ti es/ programs are as follows: PUBLIC SECTOR EMPLOYMENT PREPARATION Students interested in public service at the municipal , county, state or federal leve l are advised to take a concentration in political science. The 15-unit concentra tion should include Political Science 200, 301,306,470, and 488. Internship in Public Administration should be taken in the public sector.
