ished to 'la y aside every weight, and . . run . . the race” (Heb. 12:1). VI. MENTAL PROHIBITION. In Proverbs 23:33, R. V., we read, “Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.” The habitual use of alcohol causes delirium tremens, in which the sufferer is the constant companion of snakes, pink elephants, etc. A Chris tian cannot afftJrd to become the victim of these delusions. VII. MORAL PROHIBITION. A drinker is generally loose in his morals, and the more he drinks the looser he is. The Christian must have high moral standards and, strive to live up. to them. He cannot afford to do anything that would cause him to lower those standards. The Bible must be our Book of standards. You can’t drown sin in alcohol (Prov. 28:13). The blood of Christ must be applied. VUI. DOMESTIC PROHIBITION. Statistics have shown that a great percentage of idiots come from drinking parents and that a large portion of our paupers are drinkers. A large per cent of our nation’s crime is committed by persons under the influence of liquor. Drink has been the direct cause of many broken homes. IX. SPIRITUAL PROHIBITION. A Christian’s body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and is to be filled with that Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19). The b o d y should not be misused by subjecting it to the damaging effects of alcohol. X. CHRISTLIKE PROHIBITION. A Christian is to “abstain from all appearance of evil” (1 Thess. 5:22).t Drunkenness and Christlikeness are far removed one from»the other. The per son who would be like the Lord Jesus Christ cannot and must not drink. For the Leader A year or so ago, when the Christian Endeavor outdoor posters were being placed on billboards along California highways, the billboard company posted one on a board which was directly on the side ■of a beer parlor. Here this beautiful poster said in part, “Young people, for better things, attend Chris tian Endeavor.” , Christianity does hold the ’’better things” for all people! It is our business to be as ' signboards pointing others from the wayside inn to the wayside cross. AUGUST 24, 1941 A CHRISTIAN STAND ON THE AMfUSEMENT QUESTION T it u s 2:11, 12 By Lyman A. Wendt Introduction It should be made very clear that the same rule, •on the question of amuse ments, does not apply to all young peo ple. For example, to make the sweeping statement to unsaved young people that
'F o r Those Who Have Topics I, EXEMPLIFIED PROHIBITION. John Barleycorn has a bad reputa tion. For long years, alcohol has been associated with crime, vice, moral cor ruption, suffering, sickness, and ruined homes. A Christian cannot make friends with anything of such reputation. Men who have made friends with alcohol and have fallen as human wrecks along the highway of life should be to us warning examples. “It biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder” (Prov. 23:32). H. PHYSICAL PROHIBITION. * The physical nature rebels against alcohol, for alcohol attacks the vital or gans and nerve centers. It destroys the protoplasm of which the human body is composed. Alcohol robs the body cells of water, and this explains the fact that a drinker has a “burning thirst” (cf. Prov. 23:29, 30). IH. SCRIPTURAL PROHIBITION. In many places in the Holy Scriptures we read such injunctions as these: "Be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot” (Eph. 5:18, R. V.). “Be not a m o n g winebibbers” (Prov. 23:20). “Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that tarry late into the night, till wine inflame them!” (Isa. 5:11, R. V.). “Woe untb him that- giveth his neighbor drink” (Hab. 2:15). The B i b l e as the Christian’s guidebook prohibits strong drink. IV. SCIENTIFIC PROHIBITION. The verdict of the laboratories of science is,' “Alcohol is a poison.” Toxic means poisonous. To be intoxicated is to be poisoned. Man does not drink Paris green nor strychnine for a bev erage. Why should he drink alcohol? Alcohol supplies no energy for growth, repair of the body, or for future use. Therefore, it is not a food. It tears .down tissue. I t is a poison. (Note 1 Peter 2:11.) V. ADVISED PROHIBITION. The greatest of our doctors advise against the usq of alcohol. The use of it affects one’s sight, smell, toiiph, taste, and hearing. Great athletic coaches have found that one who drinks is not physically up to par. We are admon- Clarence Darrow and Clarence True Wilson were debating. Said Darrow, “I bought goine grape juice and put it away for a month, and God turned it into wine.” Wilson replied, “ How about eggs ? Nature in time will do the same tiling to them. But I don’t insist upon eating them addled because it was nature that fixed them that way; I don’t argue my right to put them on the market.” Darrow had no answer. —BRETHREN EVANGELIST.
