they should not dance, smoke, or at tend shows, etc., is entirely out of order. As a matter of fact, unless what they are doing is harmful to their bodies or to society, there is nothing wrong in the “things” which they claim they have a right to enjoy in the matter of amuse ments. » These “things” are merely the natural fruitage of an inward condition. They are characteristic of the “old life,” and until a young person is “bom” into a new life (John 1:12), it is impossible for him to see the harm in certain amusements, and naturally so. The “old nature” lives on those things. The “new nature” abhors them (cf. Gal. 5:17). When a young person becomes a real child of God, everything (including amusements) changes. By faith, we become members of a new family (John 1:12), and Jehovah becomes "Father” (Rom. 8:15,16). We have a new na ture (2 Pet. 1:4), and this new nature requires a change of associations, ex ercise, food, and amusements. As bur theme text reveals, the people of God are a taught people (“the grace of God. . . teaching us” ).- Let us apply the meaning of this text to the social life of the world as it is today, and let the grace of God teach us in what realm of amusement the true Christian young person should live. For Those Who Have Topics I. THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF CHRIS TIAN AMUSEMENTS. “Denying ungodliness and worldly lusts.” 1. Look up the definition foi) “deny,” “ungodly,” "lusts,” and make applica tions. * 2. What, actually, is the amusement realm of the unsaved? Name the things in which the “world” seeks its enjoy ment. 3. Do you think these are the things which our “Father” asks us to “ deny” ourselves? Why? Note 1 John 2:15; James 4:4; Matthew 16:24. These verses absolutely settle the amusement ques tion. Note them carefully! They are negative! That is, there are some things Christians are not to do. II. THE POSITIVE SIDE OF CHRIS TIAN ‘ AMUSEMENTS. “Live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.” 1. “ Soberly.” This does not mean “morbid” or “sour” or "grouchy,” but “being well balanced,” "realizing the importance of life.” The life of the Christian young person is to be held in check by the Holy Spirit, not carried off by the foolishness.of the crowd. 2. “Righteously.” This means to be in possession of and manifest the righteousness of Christ (1 Pet. 2:24). Example: The language of the Chris tian is not, “Could I take the Lord Jesus to the theater with me?” but,

N o t e and apply Romans 13:14. 3.' “Godly.” It is no secret that the church and preachers and Christians in general have, in many cases, become a joke! Why? The reason is found in the absence of God in the life of the church, the preacher, the Christian. Men never really laugh at godliness; they marvel at it! What a marvelous opportunity we have to let ungodly men see God in us by taking a definite stand against the things which God hates! . Note Colossians 3:17 and 1 Corin thians 10:31. These verses also settle absolutely the amusement question. Note them carefully. They are positive! For the Leader With such verses as Romans 14:23 (“dàmned” is translated “condemned” in the Revised Version) and 1 John 5:17 as a guide, list the amusements and activities of modern youth in two col umns: "righteous” and "unrighteous.” This will show that there are some “amusements” in which young people may participate "to the glory of God.” It is wonderful fun to live a yielded life! AUGUST 31, 1941 A CAMPFIRE SERVICE OF WORSHIP P s a l m 27:1-6 By Ruth E. McCreery THE TRIUMPHANT CHRISTIAN Introduction Not all believers are triumphant Christians. Yet the annals of history give ample evidence of a host of Chris tians who have lived gloriously trium phant- lives. Let us endeavor to see what makes the difference. For Those Who Have Topics I. HIS COURAGE (Psa. 27:1). William S. Plumer has said, "Neither spiritual nor military heroes do exploits through cowardice. Courage is a neces sary virtue.” The secret source of the believer’s courage is not himself, but rather his God. The Christian is one who knows God as his light and salva tion. A blind man may know a great deal, about the sun and yet never can claim it as the source of his light. How ever, the believer is one who not only knows that "God is light” but also haj
