by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God” (2 Cor. 1:4). I pray that Christ will overrule all our trials to make us more humble and dependent, and to give us tenderness of spirit toward the distressed. The ex ercised and experienced Christian, by the knowledge he has gained of his own heart, and the many difficulties he has to struggle with, acquires a skill and compassion in dealing with others. —John Newton. 25. The Joy of Forgiving “Forbearing one another, and forgiv ing one another, . . . even as Christ for gave you, so also do ye” (Col. 3:13). As forgiveness of your sins was one of the first things Jesus did for you, forgiveness of others is one of the first that you can do for Him. And remember that tovthe new heart here is a joy even sweeter than that of being for given . . . The joy of being forgiven is only that of a sinner and of earth; the joy of forgiving is Christ’s own joy, the joy of heaven.—Andrew Murray. 26. The Saddest Story “The chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isa. 53:5). The Bible contains the saddest story of man-and the saddest story of God. Together they make the saddest story of the ages. The sadness of the story of man began in surroundings that were perfect . . . But no man can know the fullness of the sadness of the fall ■unless he fathom the bottom of the bottomless pit . . . The saddest story of God is Calvary. Taking its rise in God’s love, conceived in the councils of eternity, from age to age, receiving ever new fulfillment, Calvary’s history goes.—Robert G. Lee*. 27. Love Beyond Knowledge “To know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge” (Eph. 3:19). Let us cast ourselves upon the love of Christ . . . It is love that “passeth knowledge.” Men who are sensible of danger are glad when they hear of such helps upon which they may boldly venture for escape. Fear and trembling as to misery hereafter can flow but from what we know, feel, or imagine; but the text speaks of a love that passeth knowl edge, consequently of a love that goes beyond all these.—John Bunyan. 28. The Path to Honor “Blessed arp ye, when men shall . . . reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake” (Lk. 6:22). When Christ would put peculiar honor upon His servants, He often suffers 'Reprinted from “ Calvaru” bp spedal per mission of Zondervan ru b . House , Grand Rajiids, Mich,

them to be brought low in the sight of men. If the saints are favored to suffer reproach for Christ’s sake, then will they own the honor put upon them to be thus conformed to their Master .' .'. Christ never allows any fàithful serv ants of His to suffer loss but He turns that loss to great gain. God always honors faithful servants. —Robert Chapman. 29. Divine Fullness “That ye might be filled with all the fulness o f God” (Eph.. 3:19). When God Intends to fill a soul, He first makes it empty; when He intends to enrich a soul, He first makes it poor; when He intends to exalt a soul, He first makes it humble; when He intends to save a soul, He first makes it sen sible of its own miseries, wants, and nothingness, and then fills it with Him self, which is unspeakably glorious. This is 'the fullness of-New Testament priv ilege for every Christian.—Selected. 30. He Carets For Thee “He careth for you” (1 Pet. 5:7). What! Careth He for me—o f saints the least, of sinners chief Indifferent to His love, and bringing Him ho joy, but grief? “He careth for thee.” Stay! Careth He for me—a wayward child, weak, worthless, poor, Among the hearers Of His holy Word, but not a doer? “He careth for thee.” Lord, since Thou makest one so vile, Thy care, I come! I come! My heart responds to such amazing love —the lost comes home! - “I care for Thee.” , —Needham Phillips. 31. Dwelling in Perfect Peace “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee” (Isa. 26:3). When waiting and wishing only to know and to do God’s will, we find hin drance will give no anxiety . . . If it is the pillar of God we are following, the Red Sea will not dismay us, for it will fur nish but another scene for the display of the power of Him who can make the waters to stand up as an heap, and to become a wall about us as we go through the sea on dry ground.—A. T. Pierson. Invest your lives for God. There is never a shadow of disappointment, never a heartbreak there.—Willis R. Hotchkiss.
