FACULTY & GLOBAL AFFILIATE SCHOLAR BIOGRAPHIES

DR. DONA WARREN dwarren@uwsp.edu

Dr. Dona Warren is a professor of philosophy in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at UW- Stevens Point. Her doctoral work addressed the underlying nature of psychological explanation, arguing that we attribute mental states to each other and account for one another’s behavior through a process of empathic imagination. For over 20 years, Dr. Warren’s teaching and research has focused on critical thinking, with special emphasis given to the ways that graphical representations of reasoning can help people to understand arguments more deeply, evaluate them more precisely, construct them with greater ease, and

communicate them more clearly. Her current research considers how these tools can foster systematic intellectual empathy and improve the quality of conversation about controversial topics and wicked problems. In addition to teaching courses, Dr. Warren (who has used her title here because it seems appropriate but who would rather be called “Dona”) serves as the Head of the Critical Thinking Center at UWSP and is the vice president of the Association for Informal Logic and Critical Thinking. Also, she loves dogs. All animals, really. But dogs especially. DR. JOYCE YAMADA yamadajo@hawaii.edu
