SPY 600 Research Apprenticeship I, II (2,2) Supervised experience in planning, conducting and reporting psychologi- cal research. The specific nature of the research project will be detennined by the student with his or her advisor. Stu- dents wi ll be required to submit a writ- ten review of literature and research proposal, conduct data gathering acti,1- ties, analy-,e the data and submit a final report of the project in APA fonnat to his/ her ad1 sor. The required total of .!!J 4 units must be comp leted by the beginning of the first semester of the
SPY 605 Psychology of ReRgion (2 or 3) Asurvey of the psychology of religion research emphasizing both content and methodological issues. Topics covered include religiosity and mental health , measures of religiosity, re li - gious development , correlates of reli- giosity and psychological aspec ts of conversion and other rel igious experi- ences. Elective. (Same as STP 705) SPY 606 Developmental Psychology (3) Concepts and processes involved in the understanding of the psyc hological development of the person throughout the lifespan. Major theoretical systems relevant to Developmental Psychology are examined with emphasis upon the study of cognitive, affective and psy- chomotor changes manifested in child- hood and adolescence. SPY 607 Psychophysiological Processes (3) An introduction to biological / neuralo- logical mechanisms and their relation- ship to psychological processes. Physi- ological processes underlying both healthy and pathological beha110r are examined. Either this course or SPY 670 or 705 is required of Psy.D., Ph.D. SPY 608 Social Psychology (3) Problems and theories of th e person on the social con text, including per- son perception , interpersonal re la- tions, role formation and differentia- tion , attitude formation, maintenance and chan ge. Requir ed of Psy.D., Ph.D. Either this course or SPY 702 is required of Psy. D., Ph.D. SPY 610 Development of Relgious Understanding in Children and Adolescents (2) An assessment of the cogni tive and affective meaning which children and adolescents attribute to religious con- cepts, practices and experiences, and their changes in meaning during the course of indi11dual development. The biblical perspective of religious devel- opment is also examined. Elective. SPY 615 Penonalty and Psychopathology II (3) The second in a two course sequence in personality theory and psychopathology. Th iscourse focuses on psychoanalytic perspectives including theorists such as Freud, Adler,Jung, Klein,Winnicou and Kohut. Required of Psy.D. , Ph.D. SPY 618 Community Mental Health I: Com· munity Systems and Resources (3) Astudy of sys tems theory with a focus on communities, schools, health agen- cies, governmental human sen1ce agen- cies, churches and fami lies: Pro11des a concepwal basis for understanding the
interactions among individuals and sys- tems. Prac tical applications include knowing how to enter systems and max- imizing available resources for clients, particularly those who are disadvan- taged or handicapped. Elective. SPY 619 ComnMity Mentm Hemth I~ Psychoe- tMationrrl/Preventive Psychotherapy Models (3) The course focuses on the develop- ment of psychoeducational approaches aimed at prevention of emotional diffi- culties or early secondary intm•ention of difficulties. Interventions suitable at strategic developmental ph ases or criti- cal situations. The stude nt will be asked to develop a semi nar or work- shop, deliver it to a suitable population and evaluate its effectiveness. Elective. SPY 621 Commimy Mentm Hemth IV: Needs Assessment and Program Evaluation Method (3) Theory and application of program evaluation methods. Students will be expected 10 cooperate in a group pro- ject in an actual needs assessment or program evaluation in a cl inic, hos- pital , school , ch urch or other agency seuing. Elective. SPY 622 Attitudes, Values and Beliefs (2) The psychological nature of attitudes, values and belief as they relate to social- ization, conformity, beliefs systems and social influence. Special emphasis is given to values in therapy and the ther- apist as values pun·eyor. Elective. SPY 625 Cross Cultural Issues in Clinical Psychology (3) A co nsid eration of th e impact of social and cu ltural factors upon the utili zation and dynami cs of mental health services. Focuses on develop- ing the student 's sensi ti1i ty to the cul- tural dynamics involved in the thera- peutic process. Elective. SPY 630 Psychology of Women (3) Adiscussion of histori cal and comempo- ra ry views of women an d a look at research on biological and psychological differences between males and females. Also includes discussion of psychothera- peutic issues, the role of women in the church, and theological perspectives on women's issues. Elective. SPY 631 Principles of Health Psychology (2-31 This course provides an oven•iew of theory, research and roles of psycholo- gists in the dissemination of psyc ho- logical knowledge in to the health care system. Areas of focus include con- cerns of the family physician for which referral might be made, adjustment to physica l disabi lities, copi ng with
chroni c illness , stages of adj ustment by individuals and th eir families Lo death and dying, preventive-educative and motivational issues in medical treatment. Prerequisites: SPY 607 and / or SLB 605 recommended. Elective. SPY 632 Research Problems in Psychotherapy (2) Consideration of research approaches to studying the process and outcomes of psychotherapy. Special emphasis is placed on measurement of process and outcomes, design and execution of research and status of psyc hotherapy research to date. Students are actively involved in reviewing and evaluating psychotherapy research in selected areas. Prerequisite: SPY 60 I. Elective. SPY 633 Advanced Seminar in Psychopathology (3) A sun•ey of the development , dynam- ics and classification of the psychologi- cal disorders from a psychoanalytic point of view. Special attentions given Lo the neuroses and the operations of ego defense mechanisms. Elective. SPY 641 Measurement and Assessment I: Intellect (3) The first in a seq uence of courses directed toward co mpe tence in administration, scoring and in terpre- tation of psychological tests. Th e course involves a survey of basic con- cepts and principles of psychological measurement, including facto rs influ- encing validity and reliability. Empha- sis is placed on the Stanford-Binet and Wechsler scales as we ll as measures of achievement , adjustment , and adap- tive behavior. Graduate sltldent will administer test baneries Lo public school and cli nic populations and also engage in diagnostic and report writ- ing activities. Graduate students will also learn diagnostic criteria for hand- icapped chi ldren as well as their legal rights as set forth by Public Law 94- 142. Covers the logic of comparative exper- imen tati on and causal inference. Emphasis is placed on problem defini- tion , hypothesis format ion and design for drawing inference. Major empha- sis is given to the concepts of parti- tioning variance and experimental and statistical contro l of variance. Analys is of var iance models useful in clinical research will be emphasized. Consideration is also given to the con- tr ibu tion of the research process to the in tegration of psychology and the- ology. Prerequisite: SPY 502. Required of Psy.D. , Ph .D. SPY 602 Cognition and Affect (3) Survey of contemporary psychological theories as they relate to cogn itive and affective processes. In formation pro- cessing models of cognitive function- ing and the interaction of cogniti on and affect are expl ored. Experimen- tal and clin ica l approaches are uti- lized. Students maychoose either this course, SPY 603 or 604. Required of Psy. D. , Ph.D. SPY 603 Leaning, Cogrition and Affect (3) Sumy of empiricallyderived psychologi- cal principles as they relate 10 learning, cognitive and affective processes. Theory and research on operant and respondent conditioning, modeling, cognitive theo- ries , and affect ive processes are dis- cussed. The relationship of these princi- ples to contemporary cogn iti ve and beha110r therapies are examined. Stu- dents maychoose either this course, SPY 602 or 604. Required for Psy.D., Ph.D. · SPY 604 ~ and Motivation (3) Asurvey of the processes, theories and research in learning and motivation. Emphasis on the specific content may var)' from year to year.
