SPY 719 Do<toral Research Seminar II (2) Building on SPY 718, this co ur se involves writing and in-depth criti cal review of the research literature on a selected topic in clinical psychology. SDS 721 Dissertation Research (1-10) Planning and impl ementati on of a resea rch project including literature review, problem definition , hypothesis formation , design , and implementa- tion of field research, data analysis, and report writing. The student 's disserta- tion research is super.1sed by a faculty chai r and committee. The final stage requires the student to successfully sus- tain an Oral Defense of the disserta- tion. Required of all doctoral pro- grams and permission of instructor. SPY 724 Self Psychology: The Theory of Kohut (3) This course focuses on the theory and clinical work of Heinz Kohm as we ll as other contemporary se lf psychology theorists. In addition to discussing the place of self psychology in broader psy- choanalytic thinking, special emphasis is placed on the clinical application and pract ica l relevance of this approach. Prerequisites: SPY515 and 615. SPY 725 Multigenerational Therapy (3) These approac hes to fa mil y therapy are conce rn ed with the individual within the sys tem, with specific focus on the aspects of their in terpersonal fun ct ionin g that represe nt attac h- mems to figures in the past that will be transmitted to futur e generations. The course combines acq ui sition of basic theories with an expe ri enti al applica tion to the therapist's own fam- ily-of-origin. Clinical illustrations will be used to demonstrate how to use the family-of-origin of each of the spouses in marital therapy to help determine multi-generational linkages to th e atomi c family. The specific 'how-to' of conducting tran sgenerational sessions with client families will be included . SPY 726 Behavior Therapy with Children and Families (3) This course emphasizes the treatment of children and families from a behav- ioral perspective including ope rant , responde nt , cog niti ve and soc ial learn ing theory models. Grad uate students mu st carry at least three clients during the course of the semester and will be afforded the opportunity to conduct parent work- shops in lieu of one cli ent. Prerequi- sites: SPY 64 1, 680, 604 (or equivalent) and completion of or current enroll-

SPY 729 Alcohol & Substance Abuse (3) Diagnosis , treatment planning, and recove ry process fo r the alcoho li c/ addict and family members will be the focus of the class. The disease model of addictions treatment and the utilization of 12-step support groups in the treat- ment of the recovering person and the famil y members will be presented. Other compulsive diseases will be dis- cussed such as sexual addiction, eating disorders, etc. Class lecture, special speakers, and assigned reading will be the primary methods of instruction. SPY 730 Dire<ted Research (1-3) Students may take special courses of study and/ or pursue research projects that they design and cany out under the guidance of a resident faculty member. lndi11dual or small group participation in a research project in psychology must be under the supervision of a faculty member. The student must submit an airanged course pennission fonn gi11ng a detailed outline of the research and oth er learn in g experiences of th e course. Required courses may not be taken through Directed Research. Approval of facul ty ad11sor and acade- mic Dean is required. (Elective) STN 731 Internship in Clinical Psychology (0) Professional experi ence of a one year internship in a facility approved by the Professional Training Committee . Prerequisites: Successful completion of comprehensive examinatio ns, co urse requirements , professiona l qualifying examina tion (Psy.D.) or professional interview (Ph.D.), and approva l of a dissertation proposal. Required of all doctoral programs. Internship fee: $1,000 per semester. SPY 733 The Sell: Theologic" Philosophical, Psychological and Cross-<ulha-al Penpe<lives (3) This course looks at philosophical , theological , psychological, and cross- cultural views of the nature of the self The course explores some of the biblical and philosophical terminol- ogy. It also explores th e hi storical emphasis on the self, with a focus on its current emphasis in psychoanalytic psychology, and its deve lopmental aspect, and a psychological 11ew of the true and false self. The western cul- ture perspective on the self is com- pared with other cultures. Finally, a religious perspective on the true and fal se self is presented.

Thi s seri es of elective courses is designed to effect a working integration of conceptual and experimental aspects of psychotherapy. Ph .D. students are required to take 12 units of SLB courses and Psy.D. students, 21 units. Each course includes botl1 course work and supervised clini cal experience within the psychotherapy model followed in the specific course. Completion of SPY 500, 515, and 680 or their equivalent is required before enro llmen t in these courses ispennitted. All SLB co urses have limited enrollments and requ ire permission of the instructor. SLB 605 Behavior Therapy (3) The obser.•ation, assessmen t and mod- ification of human behavior, includ- ing operant , respondent and soc ial learning mode ls. Emph asis is on supervised cl ient interaction . Prereq- ui site: SPY 604 and permission of instructor. Elective. SLB 613 Psychotherapy with the Adolescent (3) Techn iq ues and problems in psy- chotherapy with adolescents. Special atten tion is focused on the implications of developmental processes of adoles- cence on u·eaunent approaches. Prereq- uisite: pennission of instructor. Elective. SLB 631 Psychodynamic Therapy I(3) An in-depth studyof the process of ther- apy based on psychoanalytic develop- men~1l theory and gi11 ng special atten- tion to the concep ts of transference, counter-transference, resistance and interpretation. Adiscussion group is included for both 631 and 632. Prereq- uisite: SPY515, participation in indi11d- ual training tl1erapy and pennission of insU11ctor. Enrollment must be planned for both SLB 631and 632. Elective. SLB 632 Psychodynamic Therapy II (3) Continuation of SLB 631. Prerequi- sites: SLB63 1 and permission of the instructor. Elective. SLB 641 Psychotherapy with Groups (3) The essen ti als of th e grou p psy- chotherapy process are examined and related to current modalities in psy- cho therapy an d general group phe- nomena. Elec tive. SLB 642 Psychotherapy with Children (3) The nature and treatment of common emotional and beha11oral problems of childh ood from a psyc hoa nalyt ic deve lopmental perspective. SLB 671 Marriage and Family Therapy I(3) Astudy of the literature and practice of marital and fam ily therapy. The course prov id es an overview of var ious approaches to fam ily therapy with a special emphasis on the strucn1ral fam- ily therapymodel. Application of cl ini- cal techniques is accomplished through observation, simulations, and at least one marital or fami ly case using a team model of intervention supervision in tl1e school cl inic. Prerequisite: SPY 650 and permission of instructor. Elective . SLB 672 Marriage and Family Therapy 11 (3) Conti nuati on of SLB 671. Major consid- eration is given to experiential ai1d psy- chodynainic perspectives on inte1vention 111thin a structural framework. Applica- tion of clinical techniques is continued from the first semester using observation , simulation, and therapy experi ence wi th supervision. Prerequisites: SLB 67 1 and pe1mission of insm1ctor. SLB 681 Special Issues in Psychodynamic Theropy I (2-3) An advanced course in psychodynamic psychotherapy dealing with issues such as impairments of the therapeutic rela- tionship, acting out, levels and timing of interpretations and psychotherapy with individuals suffer ing from distur- bances in early object relati onships. Prerequisites: SLB 63 1, 632 and per- mission of instructor. Elective. SLB 682 Special Issues in Psychodynamic Therapy II (2-3) Continuati on of SLB 681. Prerequi - si te: SLB 68 1 and permission of instructor. Elective. SLB 702 Principles and Practices in Case Supervision I(2-3) A semi nar in case supervision.
