EDUCATION

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the Master of Arn degree in Education, it is intended that the candidate understand tJ1e the- 01)' and prac ti ce of tJ1e Ch,istian ph ilos- ophy of education and other founda- tional areas; have a thorough knowledge of curriculum design and insu-t1ctional procedures and have p1,tCticed these in a school set ting; and have engaged in research relating to tJ1e subject in which he ins tructs , resu lt ing in a project designed to improve his competence in the fie ld. This deg ree is current ly offered only in conj unct ion with the Research Insti tu te for Ch ristian Educa- tion (R. I.C.E.) located in Hong Kong. This program is desig ned to strengthen the capabilities of teachers. It pro1~des a study of fo undations, cur- riculum and instruction and the resuhs of research - all designed to improve teaching and learni ng. The program combines theory with practice through- out, usi ng field experience with the course work culmina ting in a project. It seeks to in tegrate Christian truth through all of the courses and fie ld experiences. Courses in Bible and the- ology are req uired of those who lack

A maximum of six un its of 400 level course work may be used as electives toward the degree. Prior approval is required. Thirty-two semes ter units are required if a pro- ject or thesis is comp leted; othenvise 36 units are required. A graduation petition must be fi led one year prior to gradua tion wi th the graduation counselor in the Registrar 's Office.

Prerequi- site: pe1mission of graduate ad11sor. 640 Seminars in Education (1 -4) In-depth studies in areas such as: coope rati ve learn in g, curricu lum , instruction , insu-uctional media, class- room control and management, organi- za tion of schools, management of per- sonnel, public relations, implementation of Christian philosophy, and early chi ld- hood education. This program is designed to be taken on a part-time basis so that it 1\1!1 be available to those who are employed fu ll-t ime. Courses are offered in late afternoon and early eveni ng bo th dur- ing the school year and in summer ses- sions. The program can be completed in two full years or four summers.
