COURSES 100 Art Appreciation (3) An introduction to the history of art crit- icism and aesthetics; a \1sual analysis of works of art; comparative studies on se lected paintings and sculptures. Designed for non-majors. Fee: S25. 104 Crafts (3) In troductory studies on various forms of handicrafts, including wood, metal art and fibers. Fee: S50.

106 Art of the Past (Historical Survey) (4) Asurvey of the development of West- ern art and architecture from its ancient origins through the Impres- sionist movement. Basic charncteristics and concepts of style, iconogrnphy and technique are discussed in relationship to religion, socioeconomic, intellectual and culturnl trends. Three hours lec- ture, one hour discussion. Fee: S20. 107 BasicDrawing (3) An introduction to drawing, perspec- tive , line, shape, value texture and composition. Fee: S25. 108 Basic Figure Drawing (3) An introduction to fundamentals of drawing the human figure from ges- ture to finished work. Emphasis on shape, form, value, structure and indi- vidual expression. Fee: $50. 110 Basic Design (3) Abasi£ founda tion course to establish visual design concepts. This course examines elements and principles of two-dimensional design. Fee:S35. 111 Three-Dimensional Design (3) Basic techniques in three-dimensional form. Introduction includes preparn- tion of drawings, models and con- struction. Fee: S35. 130 Introduction toStudio Arts (3) Astudy of the primary historical styl is- tic periods of man 's work in the \1sual ans. Classroom experience wi ll all ow for hands-on experience in working with a variety of materials in both 2-D and 3-D media. For non-art majors only. Fee:S25. 210 Sculpture I (3) Introduction to the methods, materi- als, and tools of sculpture and general concepts of sculptural form . Fee: S50. 211 Ceramics I (3) An introduction to wheel technique and beginning throwing ski ll s. Formu- lation of basicglaze applications in the development of fire ceramics will be emphasized. Fee: $50. 212 Printmaking I (Intaglio/Relief) (3) An introduction to the language of etchi ng and the wood block print, 111th emphasis on the development of ideas and expe rimenta ti on in black and white. Prerequisite: I07. Fee: S55.

213 Painting I (3) Basic color theory and painting tech- niques. Trad itional to contemporary styles will be explored. Prerequisite: 107 or consent. Fee: $25. 221 Photography I (3) Experience in fundamenta ls of black and white photography covering both creative and technical aspects. Fee: S45. (See also Communication 245) 304 Ceramics II (3) Continued individual development in all areas of ceramics. Introducing vessel construction from hand-built techniques, low fire glaze applications and in troduc- tions in firing the kilns. Fee:S50. 305 Sculpture II (3) Emphasizes sculptural aesthetics and appropriate technology. Students \11 11 be involved with formu lating a con- ceptual and technical basis for ongo- ing work. Fee: $50. 306 Elementary Art Workshop (3) Developing and preparing art projec ts suitable for elementa11• school pupi ls. For liberal studies majors. Fee: $50. 307 Intermediate Drawing (3) Exploration of the overlappi ng rela- tionships found in mixed media draw- ing. Experimentation is encouraged, with emphasis being placed on fi n- ished works of art. Fee: S25. 308 Painting II (3) Concentration on developi ng imagina- tive resources of the individual through the use of oils and acryli cs. Color, shape, image, visual, ideas and techniques are covered. Prerequisite: 213 or consent. Fee: $25. 309 Figure Painting (3) An introduction to fundamenta ls of pai nting the human figure from ges- ture to finished work. Color theory and painting techniques to be explored. In tenerm only. Fee: $50. 310 Printmaking II (Serigraphy/Monoprints) (3) An introduct ion to screen-printing techniques and other mixed med ia alt ernative pri ntmak ing methods, including monoprinting. Prerequi- site: 212. Fee: $55. 311 20th Century Art History (3) The history of painting, sculpture and architecture from 1890 to 1970. Major aesthetic issues that shaped 20th cen- tury art will be examined. Fee: $20.

The An Department seeks to aid in the development of men and women for the life and production of the artist; to provide guidance in the development of a biblical phi losophy of art that re lates to the person , his Creator and in turn , to the world. Upon completion of the art major, the student should have begun to develop an adequate foundational understanding of var ious areas of expression. Through development of sk ills, phi losophy and histori cal per- specti\'es of art , the Bio la graduate should be prepared for postgraduate study or a career in art in either secu- lar or Christian related enterprises. DEGREE PROGRAMS A Bachelor of Aris degm in Ari is offered upon completion of the univer- sity baccalaureate and major req ui re- ments. The art major requires the com- pletion of 52 units, consisting of the fol- lowing: 106, 107, 108, _11 0, 11 l , 210, 211, 212, 213, 304, 305, 308, 310, 311, 315, and six units of 400 level electives. A Bachelor of Science degree in Art is offered upon completion of the univer- sity baccalaureate and the art major in one of the fo llo111ng emphases: studio arts, graph ic design , art education, or pre-an therapy. Each of these four con- centrntions offer additional choices for focused study.
