The Certificate in Biblical Studies program is designed with two specific needs in mind. The first is fo r persons who seek a year of study in preparation for a lay service with an overseas mis- sion agency, or for more effective lay involvement in the life of their local congregation. It also serves as a ;' trial year in seminary" for persons who wish to test their gifts and skills with a view toward possible further preparation for ...!!J full-time Christian ministry. The Master of Arts degree , with emphases in Bible Exposition , New Testament, Old Testament, Theology, Philosophy of Religion and Ethics, Specialized Ministries, Women 's Min- istries, Youth Ministries and Biblical and Theological Studies-Diversified (non-language ), has been developed for those whose calling to Christian service is to positions of leadership for which the Master of Divinity or other professional degrees are not normally required. It is structured to provide: I. An unders tanding of Scrip- tures for students anticipating Christ- ian ministries that would include church administrators , parachurch organ ization leadersh ip , coun selors, "tent-making" occupations in other cultur es, lay leaders in the local church and others. 2. A bibli ca l background for those who are preparing for teach ing in non-theological fields. 3. An academic background for th ose who find th e Master of Arts degree ample for a teaching position either at home or in a foreign country. 4. A program of study for mis- sionaries who have only a brief fur- lough time in which to pursue formal studyof the Scriptures. 5. Sustainable ski ll s in specific ministries further developing yo ur abilities and spir itual gifts, and strengthening your areas of weakness. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants must possess a ba c- calaureate degree . Each should be a graduate from a recognized or accred- ited college with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). All applicants must submit a writ- ten statement outlining their voca- tional objectives and how the degree might relate to those objectives. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS A. Satisfactorily complete 64-66 semester units as outlined in the cur- riculum charts below. B. Submit an accep table thesis, chosen in consultation with the major advisor, or at the option of the major advisor and in lieu of the thesis, com- plete four additional units of electives. Students who write a thesis 11~11 have a total requirement of 64 units and those who take two additional units in li eu of a th es is will have a total requirement of 66 units.
D. Obtain a 3.0 average with no grade below a "C-" in all courses to be credited toward graduation. E. Complete the entire program in no more than five years. Students are placed on academic probation if their grade point average for any semester falls below 3.0 and will remain on probation as long as the single semester or cumulative grade point average remains below 3.0. Probation students are granted one semester in which to bring their academic work up to the requ ired level (3.0) for continuance in the sem- inary. A student cannot graduate while on probation. EMPHASES REQUIREMENTS Program Structure The academic programs leading to th e degre e Master of Ans with emphases in Bible Exposition, New Testament, Old Testament, Theology, Philosophy of Religion and Ethics , Specialized Ministries, Women's Min- istries , Youth Ministries and Biblical and Theological Studies-Diversified are comprised of 64-66 units struc- tured in common to include I) bibli- cal and theological foundations, 2) academic specialization in one of four disciplines requiring biblical language studies, or general studi es in which biblical languages are not required, and 3) additional elect ive courses determined by the student in consul- tation with the advisor. Program Reduction Based on Prior Academic Study Applicants who have taken under- graduate courses in biblical or theo- logical studies may request a program reduction based on collegiate work. An evaluation will be made by the reg- istrar 's office following estab lish ed guidelines to determine competency within the following perimeters: I ) undergraduate biblical studies which are parallel in content with required courses and 2) undergraduate biblical studies which mayjustify a reduction in elective units. To qualify for such reductions the student must have ea rn ed a "B" grade in specific course(s) and be able to demonstrate competency in the subject matter.
