These examinations are given twice a nnually and serve as the major means of evaluating a stu­ dent's suitability co continue studies coward the doctorate. The examina­ tions may be taken after completion of 75% (100 units) of the course work and must be successfully com­ pleted prior to the Professional Qualifying Examination. Only one re take of che exami­ nation is allowed. 'T'he dates o f the Comprehensive Examina­ tions are specified in the Acade­ mic Calendar. (4) Admission to Candidacy Official candidacy for the doctorate signifies an advanced stage in the scudent·s progress. In order to be admitted to candi­ dacy the student must have: ■ Successfull y completed che Preliminary Oral Interview ■ Passed the Comprehensive Examinations ■ Received approval of the dissertation proposal by the Doctoral Committee or com­ pleted the two-semester, five­ credit Doctoral Research Sem­ inar and comprehensive profi­ ciency research examination ■ Completed training therapy (5) Professional Qualifying Examination All doctoral students must successfully complete an exami­ nation that evaluates the stu­ dent's readiness for a full-rime internship. le may he taken any time after the comprehensive examinations have been passed

and must he completed prior to acceptance of an internship. The examining committee may require the student co complete additional course work, prac ticum , or other professional g rowth experiences prior to beginning rhe internship . See the Professional Qualifying Examination Guidelines in stu­ dent handbook for further detail. (6) Internship All srndents are required to complete a one-year. full-time clinical internship prior ro gradu­ ation. All internships are to he approved in advance by the Clin­ ical Training Committee. For further details , refer to the Internship Guidelines in student handbook. Internship fees are listed in the psychology course sect ion (STN 731 Internship ). There is some provision for stu­ dents co complete this require­ ment in rwo yea rs at half-time. (7) Completion of Training Therapy All students must receive cer­ tification of completion of train­ ing therapy from the director of c linical training. A minimum of SO hours of group therapy plus SO hours of individual therap y is required. See Training Therapy Guidelines in the swdent hand­ book for further details. (8) Dissertation OR Research Consumership Sequence All Ps y. O. students must demonstrate doctoral-level mas­ tery of a research area in clinical

Di.rsct111tio11 Re.rctlf,:h: Srndents in Rosemead's Psy.D. track may fulfill the research componenc of their program either hy writing a dis se rtation or by successfully completing a research consumer­ ship sequence (5 units) which includes a yea r-long doctoral research seminar, a doctoral paper consisting of a critical review of research literarnre on a clinical topic, and a proficiency examination for consumers of clinical research . (2) Preliminary Oral Interview All scudents have an oral interview with a faculty commit­ tee ro eva luate their progress and potential for successful comple­ tion of the doctoral program. This incerview is scheduled after the completion of three semes­ ters in residence , including at least one pract ic um assignment. The results of this incerview are reported to faculty, which vnces ( 1) allowing the studenc to con­ tinue. (2) continue studies with a Preliminary Oral Interview re­ examination the following ye ar , or (3) not allowing the swdenr to continue in the doctoral program. (3) Comprehensive Examinations All students must pass a set of doccoral-level comprehensive examinations covering the fol­ lowing areas: ( 1) ps ychological intervention and (2) psychology and rheology.

Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology (1) Residence and Course Work Normally, four years of resi­ dency are required unless trans­ fer of credit is brought in and advanced standing granted. While the doctorate is not awarded simpl y for completion of stated co urse work , there are basic unit requirements for the degree ( 133 semester hours) . Each srndenr is assigned a faculty advisor who assists in the plan­ ning of each semester ' s schedule of courses and supervises the srn­ de nr's progress in the program. Psvchologv: Psy.O. srndent, must complete a minimum of 76 semes­ ter hours of psycholob'Y· These 76 unit, must include 43 required psy­ cholob'Y units, 18 units of practicum and 15 unit, of deceive psycholob'Y courses. Student, may apply up to 6 unit, of graduate c·oursework from the School of lnterculcural Studies roward the rocal psycholob'Y hours requirement Psychotherapy Laboratory: Stu­ dents in the Psy.O. track must complete 21 units selected from psychotherapy lab courses. These are taken in the second, third and fourth years.
