Each student will select a mentor from the grad uate faculty to guide his or her di ssertation research. Admission into the graduate program of the School of Intercul­ tural Studies does not guara ntee completion of the doctoral degree. (2) Time Limit for Degree Completion All course and academic requirements for the D.Miss. degree must be completed within 10 years, beginning on the date of the student 's first regis­ tration . Petitions for extension beyond 10 yea rs will be consid­ ered on a case by case basis for srndencs who may need exten­ sive field experience or field research requirements. (3) Withdrawal and Readmission Procedures A swdent who must drop o ut of school or is planning co return to field service must go throu gh the formal withdrawal process. To re turn co active scaws th e stu­ dent should con tact the program director and file a readmission form with the admissions offi ce . (4) Oral Interview and Admission to Doctoral Study All swdents will have an inter­ view with a fac ulty committee to evaluate their progress and poten­ tial for successfu I compl etion of the doctoral program. The inter­ view is scheduled after one semes­ ter in residence and the comple­ tion of at leas t one si g nificant piece of written work demonstrat­ ing the student's skill in research writing. T he results of this inter­ view are repo rted co the faculty, which votes either en admit. admit

(5) Comprehensive Examinations All s tudents must pass com­ pre hensi ve exams cove rin g the following areas: a. lnterculcural studies b. History and cheolo1,,,yofmission c. Society, technology and mis­ sions d. The student's specialization. These exams are given once a year in April and serve as a major means of evaluating a srndent ' s suitability to co ntinu e stu dies coward the doctorate. (6) Field Ministry and Language Requirement All students must compl ete a minimum of three co ntinuou s years of practical missionary expe­ rience in a crossculcural (or cross­ subculwral ) setting. It is assumed that the student will acquire flu­ ency in a second language learned during chis missionary service and chat this language will be the lan­ guage of field research. (7) Admission to Candidacy Official cand idacy for the doc­ torate signifies an advanced stage in the student 's progress and is charac­ terized by self-directed resea rc h and preparation of a dissertation under th e direction of a faculty advisor. In order to be admitted to c·andidacy the swdent must have: a. S uccessfu ll y compl e ted the Preliminary Faculty Interview b. Passed th e comprehensive examina t ion c. Compl e ted the fi e ld ministry req uireme nt d. Received approval of the dis­ sertation proposal by the Doctoral Committee Upon re ac hin g ca ndidacy a student mus t register for a total of 8 disse rtation units prior to g radu­ ation . Uni ts are ordinaril y taken at the rate of 3-4 per semester dur­ ing the dissertation stage and chis co nstitutes full-time enrollment. During th e diss ertation phase, students are cons idered full time for a max imum of one year. If the doctoral candidate has not defended the dissertation by th e time the 8 dissertation units are completed , th e candidate must enroll continuousl y, in SCL 882 D.Miss. Continuous E nroll ­ ment Research. This enrollment carri es no academi c creel it but maintains the student 's continu­ ous registrat ion .

(8) Dissertation

T he doctoral dissercacion will be based upon research conducted in the field of ministry, usuall y over a period of six months co one year. The dissertation must demonstrate high attainment in sc hol a rship related to professional missiology. The dissertation copic and proposal mu st be approved by the candi­ date 's advisory committee prior tO beginning of the srndent 's field research. Three weeks prior to expected graduation the candidate must submit to the School of lnter­ culwral Studies the original and two copies of his dissertation signed by

the dissertation committee. (9) Final Oral Examination

The final examination 1s an ora l defe ns e of th e dissertation before the doc tora l committee and ocher in vited professionals. (10) Graduation Requirements All srndencs must present an accepcah le d issertat ion , ha ve sat­ isfacto ril y passed th e ir compre ­ hensive examinations and have compl e ted a ll required co urse work with a minimum 3.30 G PA to qualify fo r g raduat ion. Doctor of Philosophy (1) Residence and Course Work The program requires a mini­ mum of 60 units pas t the appropri­ ate maste r's degree or its equiva­ le nt . with 48 semest er hours of course work and 12 semester hours of dissertation research . The 48-unit compon e nt of the program co ntains a 12-unit education core requirement. a 12- uni t sequence of ed ucation resea rch requirements and 9 units of theological reflect ion and inte­ g rati on. This allows the smdent to select an e mphasi s from the remaining IS required units from a wide variety of courses offered across the Uni versity curri culum . If a student has completed grad uate cours ewo rk but has no master's degree, or has a master's degree which does not contain the background necessary for the Ph.D. program, the meal program will be longer than 60 units, ,1s determined by the program director. Summer Institute of Linguistics In e<x>peration with the Sum­ mer Institute of Linguistics Biola offers a number of lingui s ti cs courses whi ch can provide a con­ centration for swdents planning for missi o n work in language analy­ sis/Bible transl ation. This 21-unit program combines five linguisti cs courses (SAL 520 or 646, 521. S23 or 622, 525 or 624, 654) and two anthropology co urs es (SCL S20, 640) ( f-or full details on these courses see the course descriptions in the I ncerc ulcural Scudies and TESOL & Applied Linguistics sections of chis catalog.)
