Tens of thousa nd s of swde nts in developing countries are req uired to learn Eng lish in sc hool. T hou sa nd s more stud y E ngl ish in order to pursue ca reers or ed ucat ional programs d e mand­ ing English la ng uage skills. Refugees and immi g rants to the U nited Sta tes desire English to s urv ive a nd to estab lish them­ selves in their ne w home la nd . T her e is thus a co n s iderabl e demand for qualified teachers of English both here and abroad. To he lp meet th e need fo r trained reac hers of E ng li sh as a Second Language (ESL) or E ng­ lish as a Foreign Language (E FL), the De partm en t of TESOL and Appli ed Linguistics offe rs two regular prog ram s in TESOL: a Cert ifi cate in TESOL and an !\I.A. in "T' ESOL. The pro­ gran1s are academi ca ll y ri gorou s. ye r foc us on the practical aspects of teaching in a variet y of set­ tings. T he departmenr also seeks to serve teac hers desiring to con­ t inue t heir professional adva nce­ menr or upgrade t he ir qu alifi ca ­ tions . and non -d egre e srnd e nts interested in ga ining basic teac h­ ing or rnroring skills, by offering a var iety of separate co urses, from introductory to advanced. The Certificate in TESOL is designed co e nab le posr- h ac­ ca laureat e studenrs to develop both a solid academic foundation in second lang uage pedagogv and practical skills in teaching E ng­ lish in crossc ulrural situations. The M.A. in TESOL. encom­ passes th e goa l of th e certifi ca te program plus th e additional goa l of broad e r academic training . Teachers are equipped for work in and beyond th e classroom in

administration , tra ining , course desi gn, etc. E mphases of the TESOL grad uate program s are, in order of priority: application of theory to teaching, lang uage pedagogy, lin­ guistic theory. crossc ulrura l com­ munication , materials design , pro­ gram administration and resea rch . Applied Linguistics Althoug h la ng uage teach ing is a prominenr area within th e fi e ld of applied lingui s ti cs, there a re many oth er a reas of importa nce which address lang uage-re lated human problem s both in the United Sta tes and abroad. Among these are bilingu al and multilin­ g ua l ed ucat ion , la ng uage plan­ ning, lexi cograph y. li te racy, sec­ ond language acquisition, tra nsla­ tion . a nd t he developmenr o r mod ificat io n of writing systems. To add ress these areas. th e department offers an M.A. in Appli ed Linguistics with several possible concentrations: lang uage survey s , linguistics . lit e racy, TESOL. and translation. T' he program provides a broad-based academ ic foundation a long with appli ed training in the areas men­ tioned above. S rudenrs satisfacto­ ril y comple t ing the T' ESOL con­ centration will receive the gradu­ ate Cert ifi cate in TESOL. SIL at Bio/a The Summer lnstirute of Lin­ guisti t-s (S IL) at Biola is associated wirh the department. This collabo­ ration enriches the applied linguis­ tit-s program by enabling srndents to ge t in one d e partment t he coursework needed for e ith er a generalise or a specialisr ap proach co culrnrall v appropriate fi e ld-based project~, such as language surveys, literacy or translation. Experienced ins tru c tors from Wyc liffe teac h courses in phoneti cs. ph onology. morphology. syntax, li teracy a nd Bible translation based on th e fi e ld srndies of SIL workers around the world. These courses are equi va­ lent to those offered at ocher SIL sch<K>ls and are reco~nizecl as valid for membership in Wycliffe and other similar o"rganizations. Continuous Enrollment (0) Normall y a swdent muse take a minimum of 3 units per se mester to he considered full time.
