The TESOL graduate pro­ grams require nine units of foun­ dational work in language, cul­ ture, and Bible. Students who enter without such a background are required to take three units each of Introduction co Linguis­ tics, lntercultural Communi cation and 13ible (or their equivalents) The Ce rtifi ca te in TESOL requires 16 semester units of pre­ scribed course work, beyond the foundat ional units, with at least nine units t aken while in resi­ dency. Pra c tice teac hin g is required, but there is no compre­ hensive examination. The M.A. TESOL program c onsists of .~2 grad uate unit s . beyond the foundational units. . The M.A. Applied Linguistics pm1c,'fam consist~ of 33 units of !c',fad­ uate work beyond the foundational units. Students entering the M.A. Applied Linguistics pru1c,'fam with­ out the seated foundational work will be required to rake three units each of Inrroduction co Linguistit.-s, Phone ti cs. Syntax or Phono logy, and Bihle, or their equivalenLs, in addition to the regu lar prog ram. The M.A. in Applied Linguistics degree requir~ intermed iate profi­ ciency in a second language. The srndent must demonstrate this pro­ ficiency bv means of either an oral or written exam. A score of 2+ on the FSI scale (or Advanced Plus on the ACTFL sca le) is considered adequate. The /vi.A. in TESOL and the TESOL co n<.:entrat ion in the 1\1.A. in Applied Linguistics pro­ gram require practice teaching. A minimum of 12 graduate unit~ must he taken on campus.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must. meet the qual ­ ifications spec ified in the Admis­ sion r.o the Schoo l of Intercultural Studies see r.ion. In addition to these, foreign applicants who are non-native English speakers must demonstrate both spoken and writ­ ten proficiency in English through an oral interview and by submitting their TOEFL (Test of E nglish as a Foreign Language) results . The TOEFL must have been taken with in the past five years. A score of 6(XJ paper/2S0 compmer with a TWE score of S is normall y required for admission to the grad­ uate programs in the department. Non-native speakers are also expected tu demonstrate oral Eng­ lish profi c iency by means of an interview with a faculty member Because teachers and applied linguists a re e xpected to ha ve a high degree of competence in writ­ ten English , all new graduate stu­ dents, both native and non-nati ve E nglish speakers. are required co take the department's Writing Pro­ ficiency Exam. If the results of the exam indicate that add itional work in written grammar and composi­ tion is needed to enable a student to perform at the level expected for this field , he or she will be expected to do independent supplementary work on writing or to take and pass one of the special st11dies courses. Foundationa l units may be taken concurrentl y with regular program courses but should normall y he completed by the end of the first year. Students normall y begin their program in the fall.
