transfer credits may satisfy Biola's standard general educa­ tion requirements, they will under no circumstances be accepted as satisfying any Torrey Honors Institute course requirements. Students who leave the Torrey program, and who wish to transfer their credits in Torrey to Biola's general education program, will receive full c redit for the courses they have taken only through the end of their freshman year. PROGRAM PLAN The Torrey Honors Institute is the most rigorous general education course of studies at chis university. Its courses fulfill the liberal art, requirements for a four-year degree at Biola in the following areas: Communication, English. Literature, Fine Arts, History, Philosophy and Behavioral Science. Torrey courses also fulfill the biblical and theological studies require­ ments (30 credits) for a four-year degree at Biola. Students need onl y 60 non-repeating credits in Torrey to satisfy these general education requirements. To gain a four-year degree, students must meet all ocher academic, social and spiritual requirement, of Biola University. Torrey courses may be used as electives in the student's major with the approval of the major department. TORREY ABROAD Torrey offers opportunities to live and study away from the Biola campus for credit. The credits earned in these pro­ grams may be applied co a student's junior and/or senior year Torrey requirements, making these programs especially helpful for students who need co concentrate on their major in their junior or senior yea r. ~ 1 ith approval, four of these credits may instead substitute for the Torrey Honors Thesis. Torrey Berkeley Torrey Berkeley consists of one or two three-week ses­ sions, usuall y offered in the summer, each worth four c redits. While in Berkeley. California, students read books, attend lectures, participate in discussion groups, visit cultural points of interest and are involved in practical ministry. Turrey Berkeley gives students the opportunity for spiritual bonding and intellectual growth in a more intensive and warm environment than is possible during the school year. Students reside in a residence hall on the campus of the University of Ca lifornia, Berkeley. They are supervised and led by a tutor in che Torrey Honors Institute and are able to interact with other stimulating leaders. They may take a variety of courses at U.C. Berkeley in the afternoons, all of which are transferable to Biola. Compo11e11ts Recommender/ Credits Y IDT 492 Torrey Abroad 4 and/or YMDT 492 Torrey Abroad (with differing content) Torrey Europe Torrey Europe is a three-week trip and course in Europe, usuall y offered in the summer. It provides students with four credits in the Torrey program. Student~ read books prior to the trip and are led by Torrey tutors in integrating that reading, and 4

OBJECTIVES The Torrey Honors Institute is a general education pro­ gram in the liberal arts for undergraduates at Biola University. le is dedicated co forming leaders ch rough the study of the mas­ ter works of Western civilization. with a special emphasis on the Bible and Christian authors. Students learn in a rigorous discussion group format en chink and express themselves clearly in both verbal and written forms. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS The Torrey Honors Institute is highly selective. Students accepted into the program represent the cop in academic abil­ ity, Christian character and potential for leadership. Admission co Torrey is hy invitation onl y. The average applicant co Torrey is among the cop I0 percent of students pl anning co attend Biola University in terms of academic, social and spiritual leadership. High school students wishing co apply to Torrey should cake four years of each of the core disciplines. Torrey applicants should have completed successfully some honors or Advanced Placement work, if such is available at their hi gh schools. ENGLISH REQUIREMENTS Scudents wishing co enroll in any courses in the Torrey Honors Institute must have outstanding skills in both written and spoken English. The prospective student will demon­ strate th e forme~ in a paper submitted with the Torrey appli­ cation and the latter by an interview with the director. ADVANCED PLACEMENT CREDIT Although most Torrey students will have earned Advanced Placement credit in high school , they will not he exempted as a result from any Torrey required classes. Advanced Place­ ment courses are helpful in preparing the student for Torrey, hue not equivalent to Torrey classes in style, content or ri gor. TORREY CERTIFICATE A student who completes the full Torrey program (64 credits inc luding thesis ) will he awa rded the Torrey Honors lnscicuce Ce rtificate. A student need not gra duate fr om Biola Unive rsity to receive the certificate, and a student can graduate without earning the certificate. Application for the certificate is made with the director normall y following the successful defense of the Torrey thesis. TRANSFER STUDENTS The Torrey Honors Institute normall y does not accept transfer students. In exceptional cases, owing co outstanding academic merit, applications for admission from transfer stu­ dents may he considered. Normally, transfer students bring transfer credits with chem. These transferred credits may sat­ isfy some standard Biola general education requirements, as determined by official consultation with the regi strar. While
