SPIRITUAL FORMATION T he Uni ve rsity be li eves th e spiritual life of the indi vid­ ual student is of utmost importance. T herefo re, every stu­ dent is urged to set as ide time for prayer and stud y ing God 's Word. Students can also choose to be part of small discipleship groups - men or women . In addition to these personal devo ti onal periods, undergrad uate students meet each Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Chase Gymnasium fo r a 40-minute chape l se rvice of worship and praise and an alternate chapel on Thursday. The grad uate schools plan se parate chape l programs . The chapel programs include speakers chosen from fac ult y, alumni , students, visiting guests; musi ca l gro ups; C hri st ian film s; drama; and other special events. Each fall there is a Spiritual Emph asis Week. Once each semester the school obse rves a planned Day of Praye r. and info rmal praye r groups meet as a regul ar part of res idence ha ll life. T he Torrey Memorial Bible Conference and the Missions Conference are high points in the deve lopme nt of the spiritual life of the student. Atten­ dance is requ ired at all of these events.

In addition, many students spend their spring breaks and summers par­ ti cipating in va ri ous m1ss1 on proj ec ts. SMU sponsors specific chapels by which students are challenged and informed concerning mission opportunities, and each yea r SMU presents th e annual Missions Confer­ ence. Other activities include missions multi -media pre­ sentations, organ izing missions prayer groups and fundrais­ ing for va ri ous mission projects. ATHLETICS Inte rco lleg iate at hl e tics at Biola Uni ve rsit y provid e men and women with interest and ability in athletics an op portunity to compete with oth e r institutions of hi gher ed uca ti on whose s ize and athletic po li c ies a re s imil a r. Intercollegiate competition for men is conducted in the following sports: base ba ll , basketba ll , J .V. bas ketb a ll , cross-country, soccer and tra ck a nd field. S po rt s for women in clud e bas ketball , cross-country, tennis , track and field , soccer and vo ll eyba ll. Intramural acti vities are organized in both team and indi vidual sports for men and women.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT FOR UNDERGRADUATES

All registe red und e rgrad uate students are members of the Assoc iated Stud e nts , Bi o la's und e rgrad uate student gove rnme nt. The stated purpose of this orga ni za tion is: "To deve lop a community th at is seeking God, that is com­ mitted to one anoth e r and that is impacting the world for Jesus C hrist. " The A.S. President pres ides over two bodies that com­ prise th e stude nt government, the Executive Counc il and the Services Council. The Executive Counc il , which holds the legis lati ve power of the A.S. is chaired by the President and consists of elected senators, the Vice President. Comp­ troll e r and Secretary. The Services Co uncil , which plans ac ti viti es and ministries for students on and off campu s is chaired by th e Vice President and co nsists of the e lected leaders of each board: Student Mi ss ionary Union , Socia l Board, Intramu ra l Board, Student Re lations, Chapel Board, C lub D irector and Publications Board. Students are wel come to attend the weekly busin ess meetin gs of both co uncil s as we ll as parti cipate on the va ri­ ous boards and work with senators. T he Associated Stu­ dent 's offices are loca ted upsta irs in the Student Uni on Building and are open Mo nd ay throu gh Thursda y. 12 to .'i p.m. , and Friday, 12 to 2 p.m.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

Each grad uate schoo l has an appropriate student gove rn­ ment program which provides leade rship and activities appropriate for graduate students. For additional informa­ tion contact the respective graduate school offices. STUDENT MISSIONARY UNION The Student Missionary Uni on is a part of the associ­ ated student gove rnment. A major function of SMU is to provide opportunities for students to share their faith in C hri st by va ri ous means of evangelism. These opportuni-
