potential for dynamic growth and development throughout their lives, and with the right co make decisions which influence their wellbeing. All persons require social interaction co achieve and maintain wellbeing. The family within the mntexc of its culwral environment is the funda ment al unit through which the socialization process is advanced. We believe that caring, a.s exem plified in the life of Jesus Christ, is the essence of nursing. The focus of nursing acciviry is the three client systems and the dynamic interac tion between them within the con text of their environment These three systems (personal. interper sonal and communiry) also are inter acting constantl y with imernal and external suessors which may affect the integri ry of the systems. le is our view that the purpose of nursing is to support and promote the proces.ses chat facilitate the systems' abilities co achieve and maintain adaptive equilibrium. This is accomplished through use of the nursing process which is ongoing and invol ves assessing, diagnosing, planning. implementing. and evalu ating. Effective use of chis process enables the nurse co work with client systems at varying locations on the health-illness continuum. Nurs ing is a dvnamic profes sion based on a growing body of scientific knowledge. Ir is our belief that Biblical studies, rngecher with the behavioral , bio logical and ph ys ica l sciences are fund amental to the development of nursing' s own unique body of knowledge. N urs ing is both arc and sc ience; its uniqu e ness does not res ide in any specific compo nent of theory or action, but can he found only in the whole. As one of the major hea lth <.-are professions, we believe nursing is accountable co God and co sociery for provision of qualiry health ca re services in a broad variety of sec ci ngs. Baccalaureate nurses endeavor co meet chis responsibil ity through invol vement in leader ship, collaboration. education, and resea rch utilization activities co improve clinic.-al practice, influence health care policies, and further the development of nursing science. In a rapidly changing world , adeq uate and equitable delivery of health care is a critic-al problem. We believe that equal access to health care services is the right of every individual in society. Through its unique contribution, nursing can and muse he an effective social force

in promoting the qualiry and avail ability of health care services for all persons. To effect 1x1sitive changes nurses must participate in all aspects of the health care delivery system including: (I) evaluating the ade quacy of health care services for the community: (2) projecting needs for additional or new services: and (3) taking appropriate action to insure adequacy of services. This requires nursing involvement with commu niry action b,roups and with local and national legislative processes. We believe initi al preparation of professional nurses to meec the health care needs of society is best accomplished through the learning acquired in baccalaureate educa tion. As nurse educators it is our responsibility co provide an envi ron menc which facilitate s th e learning necessary co pre pare grad uates for professional practice and advanced professional education. Consistent with our belief about the nature of persons, we believe swdencs and faculry members are uniquely c reated hy Goel and endowed by God with dignity and worth. As C hristian educa tors we value the distinctive cultural, ethnic. and social backgrounds of each per son and recognize chat chis diversi ry enriches our learning environment Ir is the role of the educator co pro vide a learning climate of Christian c-a ring which: ( I) enhances swdents' abilities to use their own unique learning styles effectively: (2) pro- motes students' aco, mplishment of personal goals: and (3) facilitates stu dents ' utilization of resources and personal support systems co enhance the ir ahiliry co meet their individual learning needs. It is our beli ef chat the goal of learning is behavioral change in the cogniti ve, affective. and psvchomo cor domains. Learning is a purpose fu I, cl ynam ic process and invol ves changes in knowledge, skills. ani wdes, values and/or beliefs. Learn ing occurs more efficien tl y. is more pervasive and more enduring when the learner act ively parti cipates in all phases of the learning process. Previous e xperience provides the fo undation for c urrent lea rning. Learning is facilitated when experi ences move from the familiar to the unfamiliar and from simple co com plex. Learning which emphasizes discovery of organizing principles r.1ther than specific content facili tates the tra nsfer of learning to novel simacions.
