Lingenfelter, Steffen Assistant Professor: Alexander OBJECTIVES The minister is faced with cross-cul- tural challenges in the community and congregation, is expected to provide a degree of mission vision to the congre- gation, and will likely recruit people for missions. The missionary needs cross- cultural training along with theological training. The church needs a true vision for evangelism and worldwide mission. The program of this department is designed to provide such training based on Biblical principles that have been proven valuable in crosscultural min- istry, missions, and human services. Any Talbot student may take elective courses through the School of Intercul- tural Studies. Students in the Master of Divinity or Master ofTheology programs with a major in missions are required to take CL 520,503 or 702,540,560 or 661, 640, and 751. Students in the Master of Divinity program in Urban/ Multi-Ethnic Ministries are required to take CL 503 or 702, 520, 531, and 560. Students in the Master of Ministry program with an emphasis in missions, are required to take CL 540, 546, 560, 640, and 751. Stu- dents should plan to take CL 640 as early in their study program as possible. Missions majors should plan to take as many electives as possible from the courses listed below. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS CL 501 Dynamics of the Religious Experience (3) Atreatment of conceptions of the super- natural , the function of religion in soci- ety, religion and social conn·ol, the nature of religious ritual and paraphernalia, sacred places and religious practitioners. CL 503 Economy, Society and Values (3) The study of economic and social rela- tions as they impact human values, with emphasis on analytic tools for comparative research and cross-cul- tural ministry. Prerequisite: 300.

PT 708 Advanced Pastoral Counseling (3) Focused on developing counseling skills needed beyond relationships to assist helpees to deal with physical, relational, spiritual, emotional and moral reality. Secondly, focused on developing skills needed to assist helpees to take respon- sibility for their own lives and grow on to ministry. Finally, overview of theoret- ical approaches to counsel ing. Prereq- uisite: PT 707. Required of M.Div. and M.A. (P.C.C.) students. PT 711 Advanced Sermon Preparation (2) A ski ll-refinement practicum in the essentia ls of expos itory preaching, including evaluation of off-campus pul- pit ministry. Prerequisites: PT 609 , 610. Elective. PT 715 Principles and Ethics of Communication (2) An explanation of the principles of communication and how they effect - learning and change. An examina- tion of the ethical issues of persuasion such as emotiona l appeals, use of guilt, fear and personalities. Elective. PT 717-718 Research Seminar (1-2) In-depth investigation of a topic under the guidance of the Practical Theology department using standard research procedures. Topic selection and course enrollment is by depart- ment approval. Elective. PT 721 Pastoral Skill Development (2) Combining of classroom experience with field trips to jails, prisons, hospi- tals, sanitariums and various self-help groups. Exposure to the problems of humanity and specialists who work with those problems. Prerequisite: PT 602. Elective. PT 724 Small Group Ministries (2) Roles of smal l groups in the church in providing fellowship, mutual ministry and edification. Skills for organizing and leading groups. Introduction to dynam- ics of small group interaction. Elective. PT 725 Counseling Troubled Families (3) A comparison of positive and negative family systems in Scripture, in theory and in church life. The development of a team approach to intervention , enrichment and equipping for ministry to families. Prerequisite: PT 628, 706, 707 and CE 675 or their equivalents. Required of M.Div., (P.C.C.), (M.F.M.), M.A. (P.C.G.) and M.A. Min. (M.F.M. ) students. Elective. PT 726 Creative Preaching (2) An exploration of several ways to pro- claim God's Word such as topical, textual, inductive, dialogical, dramatic narrative,

PT 802 Spiritual Conflicts and Counseling (2) A study of the conflict between the kingdom of darkness and the king- dom of light with an emphasis on the authority, power, protection as well as the vulnerability of the believer. The techniques of counse ling the spiritua lly afflicted are also consid- ered. Elective for Th.M. students; others by departmental permission. PT 807 Integration of Psychology and Theology (3) A survey of the different approaches, models and attitudes for the integra- tion of psychology and theology. Elec- tive for Th.M. students; others by departmental permission. (Cross listed with RSTP 722.) PT 880 Directed Research (1-3) In-depth inves tigation of a topic under the guidance of the Practical Theology department using standard research procedures. Topic selection and course enrollment is by depart- ment approval. Elective . PT 891-892 Research Seminar (3,2) Discussion and application of the central areas of Practical Theology research and related fields of study. Insu·uction in research methodology, including the identification of a problem, the steps taken to resolve it, and writing the results. Required for the first semester of the Th.M. (P.T.) program. A second semester may be taken to continue research in the area of interest

Examination of the process of planning, organizing, leading and supporting from a biblical basis and made applicable to Christian se1vice and ministry. Required of M.Div. (Pastoral and General Minisnies). PT 734 Church Finance and Administration (2) An examination of the biblical principles of stewardship, fund raising and financial accountability. Office and physical plant administration as we ll as the use of the computer will be addressed. Prerequi- site: IT 730. Elective. PT 740 Issues & Ethics in Ministry (2) A study of the ethical issues unique to the pastor, his familyand the congrega- tion. An examination of theological and psychological aspects of pastoral care, including ethical issues, network- ing with other health care professionals, management of the practice of church discipline, and equipping of the laity for pastoral care ministries. Required of M.Div., and M.A. (P.C.C.). PT 750 Directed Study (1-4) Reading and research in selected areas of study. PT 760 Seminar (1-3) Selected topics in the field of ministry. May be repeated with different content PT 774 The Family of the Christian Leader (2) A consideration of the special and unique problems faced by vocational Christian workers and their families. Includes all phases of occupational Christian minisuy Elective. PT 775 Parent Education in Ministry (2) Review of the history of parenting, bibli- cal injunctions and models of parent- ing, and current research on parenting. Then the development of parent educa- tion modules for conferences, seminars, workshops, learning groups or preach- ing series. PT 791-792 Field Internship (2, 2) Integration of all the disciplines of min- istry and seminary education. It pro- vides supervised experience in various phases of Christian ministry. One hun- dred hours of field experience each semester are evaluated in classroom interaction. Required of M.Div. (Pas- toral and General Ministries, Christian Education) students. Prerequisites: PT
