Doctoral students may transfer up to 30 semester hours of applicable graduate-level courses in psychology (including the nine hours on the mas- ter's level) and/ or up to 15 hours of theology and Bible applicable to Rose- mead's program (including the nine hours on the master's level) from an accredited graduate school or theology semin ary . Practicum credit in the amount equal to one Rosemead practicum of three hours may be trans- ferred with the permission of the direc- tor of clinical training. The e hours will be coun ted toward the 30 hour transfer maximum. Practicum transfer credit will be granted on ly when it is shown as practicum on an official grad- uate transcript. Ph.D. students are required to take all 12 practicum hours wh ile in residency. Rosemead will not evaluate non-traditional learni ng or non-transcripted work experience for academic or practicum credit. \Nhen students wish to use n·ansfer cred it for a required course in the Rosemead curriculum , it is their responsibili ty to provide documenta- tion assuring the equivalency of course con tent. Compe tency examinations may be given to verify equivalence to Rosemead required courses. Docu- mentation may include catalog descrip- ti ons, syll ab i and other suppo rti ng materials from the professor of record or department, as deemed necessary. Unofficial Withdrawal Astudent who fails to register in any given semester without arranging for a leave of absence or formal withdrawal is eliminated fromthe program bydefault. Leave ofAbsence In act ive students are those who have requested and been gran ted a leave of absence from their program. A leave of absence may be granted upon petition for change of status if there is deemed sufficient reason for interrupting the program and inten- tion to return to the program. Change of status forms are ava ilable from the Registrar 's Office. A leave of abse nce must be renewed by pet iti on each semester and may not exceed two consecutive semesters. A leave of absence longer than two semesters wi ll require with- drawal from the program and a peti- tion for readmission if the student later wishes to regain act ive status. No graduate credit in psychology will be given by examination or valida- tion. Students who possess an excel- lent but non-transcripted background in an area of study may, with the per- mission of the advisor and chair of the Committee on Academic Qualifica- tions, va lid ate by examinati on to receive a waiver for a required course. No unit credit is given for such va lida- tion. Successful validation allows the student to take additional equivalent elective hours in the program. Time limit for Degrees All course and academic require- ments must be completed within eight years for the Psy.D. and Ph.D. degrees, beginning on the date of the student's first registration for graduate study at Rosemead. Note: If the program is not completed within the eight-year limit, the student must register again as a full-time student. Requirements in Student Handbook. Student Academic Load The normal full-time load for a Rosemead student in psychology is 12 to 16 hours per semester, but not less than nin e hours. Without the advi- sor's approval, a student may not carry over 16 units in any semester. Part- time registrat ion of less than nine units is permitted on ly after a student has bee n admitted to ca ndidacy. Pre-Internship and Dissertation Students Pre-internship, internship and dis- sertation (ABD) status students must con tinu e to reg ister and pay the required fees each semester appropri- ate to their .status (see fee schedule). Students in dissertation sta tus who have completed their required units in dissertation research and all pre- internship students must register for three additi onal units each semester unti l the dissertation is completed. A person who has been termi- nated from Rosemead may make reap- plication to the program a minimum of two years after termination. The reapplication should be in the form of a letter and include a new application form, at least two current references and anydesired supporting materials. The letter should be addressed to the Rosemead Admi s- sions Committee stating the reasons for requesting readmittance as we ll as any other issues deemed relevant by the ap pli cant. The letter should direct ly address the causes for di s- missal. The application will be consid- ered with the regular admissions pool. The admissions committee will review the request and may take one of two actions: (A) deny the request; or (B) approve the request and refer to faculty for fina l approval or di sap- proval. The resul ts of the faculty deci- sion will be communicated to the applicant by the Dean. Readmission Procedures Astudent who has attended Biola Un iversity and has dropped out for one semes ter or longer will be requ ired to file an appl ication for readmission and pay a fee of $10. Stu- dents enrolled for any semester, but who fa il to pre-register for the follow- ing semester, wi ll be charged a $35 reapplication fee should they choose to return for that semester. Readmission requires the submis- sion of a formal petition for readmis- sion, action by the Admissions and Aca- demic Qualifications Commit tee, and fi nal approval of the dean. This policy is in effect for students in any status, including internship and dissertation. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Graduate Psychology Courses under this designation provide the essential scientific and theoret ical data base fo r advanced graduate study in clinical psychology. SPY SOI Introduction to Psychotherapy (2) An in troduction to the theory and tech- niques of psychotherapy. Includes an emphasis on the relationship between models of psychopathology and psy-
approaches are covered. Instruction assumes undergraduate background in statistics. Required of Psy.D. , Ph.D. SPY S 10 Motivation (3) Physiological, psychological and social basis for motivation. Topics include dii- ves, obesity, sexual motivation, need for achievement and aggression . Elective. SPY S 13 Sensation and Perception (3) Theory and research regarding the process of sensation and perception and their relation to motivation and learning. Elective. SPY SIS Personality and Psychapatholagy I(3) The first of a two course sequence in personality theory and psychopathol- ogy. This course focuses on humanis- tic-existential perspectives, including theories such as All port, Cendlin , Maslow, May, Rogers and Van Kaam. The course also includes an inn·oduc- tion to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (OMS-III). Required of Psy.D., Ph.D. SPY 530 History and Systems of Psythology (3) An overview of the history of psychol- ogy and classical systems in psychol- ogy. The class also considers issues in the ph ilosophy of science relevant to psychological systems, research , theory, and practice. Required of Psy.D., Ph.D. SPY 600 Reseorch Apprenticeship I, II (2,2) Supervised expe ri ence in planning, conducting and reporting psychologi- cal research. The specific nature of the research project will be deter- mined by the student with his or her advisor. Students will be required to submit a written review of literature and research proposal , conduct data gathering activities, analyze the data and submit a final report of the project in APA format to his/ her advi- sor. The required tota l of 4 units must be completed by the beginn ing of the first semester of the third year in the program.
