SPY 601 Research Design (3) Covers the logic of comparative experi- mentation and causa l inference. Emphasis is placed on problem defini- tion, hypothesis formation and design for drawing inference. Major emphasis is given to the concepts of partitioning variance and experimental and statisti- cal conu·ol of variance. Analysis of var i- ance models useful in clinical research will be emphasized. Consideration is also given to the contribution of the .!!J research process to the integration of psychology and theology. Prerequisite: SPY502. SPY 607 Psychophysiological Processes (3) An introduction to biological/neuralo- logical mechani sms and their relation- sh ip to psychological processes. SPY 608 Social Psychology (3) Problems and theori es of the person on the social context, including per- son perception , interpersona l rela- tions, role fo rmation and differentia- tion , attitude formation, maintenance and change. Required of Psy.D., Ph.D. Either this course or SPY 702 is required of Psy.D., Ph.D. SPY 610 Development of Religious Understanding in Children and Adolescents (2) An assessment of the cognitive and affec tive meaning whi ch children and adolescents attribu te to religious con- cepts, practices and experiences, and their changes in meaning during the course of individual development. The biblical perspective of religious devel- opment is also examined. Elective . SPY 615 Personal'!ly and Psychopathology II (3) The second in a two course sequence in personali ty theory and psychopathology. This course focuses on psychoanalytic perspectives including theoiists such as Freud, Adler,Jung, Klein, Winnicott and Kolrnt. Required of Psy.D., Ph.D. SPY 618 Community Mental Health I: Com· munity Systems and Resources (3) A study of systems themy with a focus on communities, schools, health agen- cies, governmental human service agen- cies, churches and fami li es. Provides a conceptual basis for understanding the interactions among individuals and sys- tems. Practical appl ications include knowing how to enter systems and max- imizing available resources for clients, particularly those who are disadvan- taged or handicapped. Elective. SPY 619 Community Mental Health 11: Psychoe- ducational/Preventive Psychotherapy Models (3) The course focuses on the deve lop- ment of psychoeducational approaches aimed at prevention of emotional diffi- culties or early secondary intervemion of difficulties. lnte1ventions suitable at strategic developmental phases or criti- ca l situations. The student wi ll be asked to develop a sem inar or work- shop, deliver it to a suitable population and evaluate its effectiveness. Elective.

SPY 621 Community Mental Health IV: Needs Assessment and Program Evaluation Method (3) Theory and app li cation of program eva luation methods. Students will be expected to cooperate in a group pro- ject in an actual needs assessme nt or program evalua ti on in a clinic, hos- pital , sc hool , church or other agency setti ng. Elective. SPY 622 Attitudes, Values and Beliefs (2) The psychological nature of attitudes, values and belief as they relate to social- ization , conformity, beliefs systems and social innuence. Special emphasis is given to values in therapy and the ther- apist as va lues pwveyor. Elective. SPY 625 Cross Cultural Issues in Clinical Psychology (3) A conside ration of the imp act of social and cultura l factors upon the utilization and dynamics of mental health se1vices. Focuses on develop- ing the student's sensitivity to the cul- tural dynamics involved in the thera- peutic process. Elective . SPY 630 Psychology of Women (3) Adiscussion of historical and contempo- rary views of women and a look at research on biological and psychological differences between males and females. Also includes discussion of psychothera- peutic issues, the role of women in the church, and theological perspectives on women's issues. Elective. SPY 631 Principles of Health Psychology (2-3) This course provides an overview of theory, research and roles of psycholo- gists in the dissemination of psycho- logical knowledge into the health care system. Areas of focus inclL1de con- cerns of the family physician fo r which referral might be made, adjustment to ph ysica l di sabilities , cop in g with chronic illness, stages of acij usunent by individuals and their families to death and dying, preventive-educative and motivational issues in medical treatment. Prerequisites: SPY 607 and / or SLB 605 recommended. Elective. SPY 632 Research Problems in Psychotherapy (2) Considerati on of research approaches to sllldyi ng the process and ou tcomes of psychotherapy. Special emphasis is placed on measurement of process and ou tcomes, design and execution of research and status of psychotherapy research to date. Students are actively involved in reviewi ng and evaluating psychotherapy research in se lected areas. Prerequisite: SPY 60 I. Elective.

SPY 633 Advanced Seminar in Psychopathology (3)

A smvey of the development, dynam- ics and classification of the psychologi- cal disorders from a psychoanalyti c point of view. Special atte ntions given to the neuroses and the operations of ego defense mechanisms. Elective. SPY 641 Measurement and Assessment I: Intellect (3) The fir st in a sequence of courses directed toward competence in adm inisu-ation, scori ng and interpre- tation of psychologica l tests. The course involves a survey of basic con- cepts and principles of psychological measurement, including factors innu- encing va lidi ty and re liability. Empha- sis is placed on the Child and Adult In tel ligence scales as well as measures of achievement, adjustment, and adaptive behavior. Graduate studem will administer test batteries to public school and clinic populations and also engage in diagnostic and report writ- ing activities. Graduate students will also learn diagnostic criteria for hand- icapped children as well as their legal rights as set fo rth by Public Law 94- 142. SPY 642 Measurement and Assessment II: Personality (3) Use of objective personality instru- ments with emphasis upon the MMPI- 11 and MCMI-11. In troduction to more structured projective instruments such as the TAT and Sentence Completion. Prerequisite: SPY 641. Cost of materi- als required for this course is approxi- mately $150. Required of Psy.D., Ph.D. SPY 643 Measurement and Assessment Ill: Projective, (Rorschach) (3) An introduction to the use of projec- tive techniques in personality assess- ment with spec ial emphasis on the administration, scoring and in terpre- tation of the Rorschach using Exner's comprehensive System. Prerequisite: SPY642. Required of Psy.D. SPY 644 Measurement and Assessment IV: Advanced Projective, (Special Issues) (2) Adva nced interpretation of the Rorschach includ ing spec ial issues as forensic evaluations, ch ild and adoles- cent personality assessment , assess- ment of thought disorder. Other basic projective in struments such as the TAT, CAT and Sentence Comple- tion tests are also covered. Prereq ui- site: SPY 643 . Elective.

Survey of contemporary psychological theories as they relate to cognitive and affective processes. lnfonnation process- ing models of cognitive functioning and the interaction of cognition and affect are explored. Experimental and clinical approaches are utilized. Students may choose either this course, SPY 603 or 604. Required of Psy.D., Ph.D. SPY 603 Learning, Cognition and Affect (3) Swvey of empi1ical lyderived psychologi- cal principles as they relate to learning, cognitive and affective processes. Theo,y and research on operam and respondent conditioning, modeling, cognitive theo- ri es, and affective processes are dis- cussed. The relationship of these p1inci- ples to contemporary cognitive and behavior therapies are examined. Stu- dents may choose either this cow·se, SPY 602 or 604. Required for Psy.D., Ph.D. SPY 604 learning and Motivation (3) Asu rvey of the processes, theories and research in learning and motivation. Emphasis on the specific content may vary from year to year. Students may choose either this course, SPY 602 or 603 . Required of Psy.D., Ph .D. SPY 605 Psychology of Religion (2 or 3) Asuivey of the psychology of religion research emphasizing both content and methodological issues. Topics covered include religiosity and mental health, measures of rel igiosity, reli- gious development, correlates of reli- giosity and psychological aspects of conversion and other religious experi- ences. Elective. (Same as STP 705) SPY 606 Developmental Psychology (3) Concepts and processes involved in the understanding of the psychologica l development of the person throughout the lifespan. Major theoretical systems relevant to Developmental Psychology are examined with emphasis upon the
