SPY 645 Measurement and Assessment V: Neuropsychologi<al (3) This cow-se provides an overview of the basic issues in neuropsychology, and examines the key cognitive-psychological abili ty areas that are assessed in a neu- ropsychological evaluation. Assessment from a flexible, hypothesis-testing and clinical perspective is emphasized. Spe- cial attention will be given to brief neu- ropsychological screening procedures which help to differentiate between organic and psychological disorders. Prerequisite SPY f/J7. Elective. Required of Psy.D. with Family-Child emphasis. SPY 647 Advanced Assessment of the Chld (3) An advanced diagnostic course which focuses on the assessment and diagnosis of exceptional chi ldren as well as legal and advocacy issues required by the Indi- viduals with Disabilities Act. Specific diagnostic populations include mentally retarded, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed and gifted children. Attention is also given to low incidence handicaps such as vision impaired, hearing impaired, multiple handicapped, etc. Prerequisites: SPY 641, 680 and comple- tion of/ or cun-ent enrollment in a child practicum. Required of Psy.D. with Fam- ily-Child emphasis. SPY 650 Family Psydiology and Psydiopathology (3) Emphasizes the construction of a con- ceptual framework for system change as a foundation for clinical interven- tion. Surveys major approaches to sys- tems-oriented fam il y therapy and includes such related issues as the family life cycl~, object relations inte- gration, family pathology/ dysfunc- tion, fami ly assessment, ethn icity and religious influences. Elective. SPY 663 Human Sexua&ty (3) An examination of the areas of human sexual functioning, beha1for, relation- ships and feelings. Issues of sexuali ty are discussed within spiritual, psycho- logical , cultural and medical/ health perspectives with implications for clini- cal treaunent of sexual issues. Elective. SPY 670 Neuropsychology (3) Consideration of behavioral and intel- lectual disorders of neurological origin. Clinical and experimental evidence is ·considered as they relate to the major syndromes. Prerequisite: Physiological Psychology. Either this course or SPY f/J7 or 705 is required of Psy.D., Ph.D. SPY 680 Preproditum (3) Acondensed version of Prepracticum 1 & II for students with signifi cant previ-
ous graduate study in psychology. This course is designed to facilitate the development of empathi c listening, interpersonal skills and basic therapeu- tic techn iques through group interac- tion and closely supervised on campus practicum experiences. Required of advanced first year students to be taken concurrently with STP 500 Psy- chotherapy and Religion. Fall . SPY 681 Preprocti<um I ( 1 ) The first of a two-course sequence designed to fac ili tate the development of empathi c listening, interpersonal ski lls and basic therapeutic techniques including an introducation to ethics. This first course emphasizes a small , interactive group format for the devel- opment of ski lls. lnterterm. SPY 682 Prepra<li<um II (2) The second of a two course sequence designed to faci li tate the development of empathic listening, interpersonal skills and basic therapeutic techniques. During this course, direct observation and videotaping of the student's first clinical practicum in the University's on- campus counseling center are utilized to provide a closelysupervised introduc- tion to the therapeutic process. Spring. Requirement: To be taken concur- rentlywith STP 500. SPY 691-696 Pnxtmn 1-Vl (3) Supervised clinical experiences including diagnostic and therapeutic activities with inpatient and outpatient clientele. Hospitals, private and pub- lic clinics, mental hea lth organiza- tions, schools and college counseling centers are utilized. Prerequisite: suc- cessful completion of SPY 680 , or approval of the Professional Training Committee. Required of all doctoral programs; Ph.D. and Psy.D. SPY 697-699 Proditum Ele<live (1-3) For students desiring supervised clinical experiences beyond the requirements for thei r degree. These are used as elective practica. Prerequisite: approval of the director of clinical training. SPY 700 Clinitol Case Conference (1) Small group supervision of ongoing psychological cases. Elective. SPY 701 College Teathing of Psydiology (2) A seminar on teaching methods including the development of course objectives, outlines, lectures and eval- uations. Major emphasis is placed on the examination of the various teach- ing methods available to the teacher of psychology. Elective.
SPY 702 So<ial Psythology: Interpersonal Protesses (3) Focuses on the social psychology of interpersonal relationships with specia l emphasis on intimate rela- tions. Prerequisite: a survey course (undergraduate or graduate) in social psychology and permission of the instructor. Required of Psy.D. , Ph .D. SPY 703 Orgarizatior, and Admnstration of Psythologi<al Servites (2) Aseminar dealing with administrative issues such as personnel, finances, commu- ni ty relationsand supervision. Elective. SPY 704 Advonted Researdi Design (3) A continuation of SPY f/Jl for students interested in pursuing dissertation research. The course includes advanced study of univariate and multivariate analysis of variance, regression analysis, canonical and discriminant analysis and factor analysis. Required, Ph.D. only. Prerequisite: SPY f/J I. SPY 705 Oinital Psythopharmotology (3) A gene ral overview of cu rrent research on the use and effectiveness of psychotropic medication in the treatment of the psychoses, neuroses and other emotional disorders. Con- sultation and class presentations by area psychiatrists. Prerequisite: SPY 607 or equivalent. Either this course or SPY 607 or 670 is required. SPY 706 The Professional Practitioner (3) Intensive consideration of the impact of psychotherapeutic practice on the personal life and relationship of the clinician and the interaction between the profess ional and private life. Issues addressed include career satis- faction, professional decorum, in ter- disciplinary relationships and therapist impairment and burnout, and steps involved in developing and maintain- ing a clinical practice. Elective. SPY 709 Current Issues in Psydiology ( 1-2) Intensive focus is given to a selected topic of contemporary interest such as grief therapy, forensic psychology, National Health Care and Psychologi- cal service. Elective. SPY 710 Spe<ial Tethniques in Clini<al Pradi<e (1-3) Intensive consideration of a specific tech- nique utilized in modem clinical practice and requiring specialized training. Asin- gle major technique, for example the Halstead-Reitan Adult Neuropsychologi- cal Battery, clin ical hypnosis, or multi- generational therapy will be tl1e focus each time this cou1-se isoffered. Elective.
SPY 711 Seminar in Ethital and Professional Issues (3) A study and discussion of the ethi cs of professional psychology with an empha- sis on the American Psychological Asso- ciation 's Code of Ethics, guidelines, and laws that govern the profession. Prepa- ration for the oral and written portions of the licensing exam in the state of Cal- ifornia is also given emphasis. The chal- lenge to integrate a professional, Christ- ian , and personal eth ical code is dis-
cussed. Required of Psy.D, Ph.D. SPY 712 Independent Study (1-3)
Individual work, directed reading or special problems in psychology. Such work must be done with the approval and supervision of a faculty professor of record. The student is expected to submit a detailed course proposal and a bibliography with an arranged course permission form available from the Registrar 's Office. Required courses may not be taken through independent study. Elective. SPY 715 Training Therapy (Group) (0) For official indication on the student's transcript of required personal growth experience through group training ther- apy. Required of all doctoral programs. SPY 716 Training Therapy (Individual) (0) For official indication on the student's transcript of required personal growth experience through an individual training therapy. Required of all doc- toral programs. SPY 718 Do<toral Researdi Seminar I(3) Thi s is the first of a two course sequence which Psy.D. non-<lissertation students can take as a partial fulfillment of their doctoral research competency. This course includes an in-<lepth study of research methods in cl inical psychol- ogy and expe1ience in critically review- ing cun-ent clinical research. SPY 719 Do<loral Researth Seminar II (2) Building on SPY 718, this cou rse involves writing and in-<lepth cr itical review of the research literature on a selected topic in cl inical psychology. SDS 721 Dissertation Researdi (1-10) Planning and implementation of a research project including literature review, problem definition, hypothesis formation, design , and implementa- tion of field research, data analysis, and report writing. The student's disserta- tion research is supervised bya facu lty chair and committee. The final stage requires the student to successfullysus- tain an Oral Defense of the disserta- tion. Required of all doctoral pro- grams and permission of instructor.
