The Master of Arts in TESOL is comprised of 33 semester units of spe- cific and elective course work beyond the program prerequisites. The Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics requires 31 units plus 12 units of prerequisites and intermediate proficiency in a for- eign language. Both degrees require a comprehensive examination, but stu- dents choosing to w1i te a thesis may be exempt from this requirement. Both the M.A. in TESOL, and the track of the M.A. in Appl ied Linguistics which includes the Certificate in TESOL, also
TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Eng li sh has become the most wide ly used language in th e wo rld today, particularly in the areas of sci- ence, commerce and education. Tens of thousands of students in developing countries are required to learn Engl ish in school. Thousands more study Eng- li sh in order to pursue careers or edu- cational programs demanding English language ski ll s. Refugees and immi- grants to the United States desire Eng- lish both to survive and to establish themselves in their new homeland. There is thus a considerable demand for qualified teachers of English both To help meet the need for trained teachers of English as a Second Lan- guage (ESL) or Engl ish as a Foreign Language (ELF) , the Department of TESOL and Applied Linguistics offers two regular programs in TESOL: a here and abroad. Certificate in TESOL and an M.A. in TESOL. The programs are academ- ically rigorous, yet focus on the practi- cal aspects of teaching in a variety of settings. The department also seeks to serve teachers desiring to continue thei r professional advancement or upgrade their qualifications, and non- degree students interested in gaining basic teaching or tutoring skills, by offering a variety of separate courses, The Certificate in TESOL is a one- year full-time program designed to enable post-baccalaureate students to develop both a solid academic founda- tion in second language pedagogy and practical skills in teaching English in cross-cultural situations. Part-time stu- dents also may enroll in the program, taking up to three years to complete it. to two years for completion of the course work, encompasses the goal of the certifi- from inu·oductory to advanced. cate program plus the additional goal of Emphases of the TESOL graduate programs are, in order of priority: appli- cation of theory to teaching, language pedagogy, linguistic theory, crosscul- tural communication, materials design, program administration, and research. broader academic training. The Department of TESOL and Appli ed Linguistics offers a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics to provide a broad-based academic foundation as well as practical training in several of the areas mentioned above. Appl icants must meet the qualifi- cations specified in the Admission to the School of lntercultural Studies section . In addition to these, fore ign applicants who are non-native English speakers are required to submit their TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) results. The TOEFL must have been taken within the past five years. A score of 550 or higher is required for admission to the gradu- ate programs in the department. Because ESOL teachers are expected to have a high degree of competence in wr itten Engl ish, all new graduate students , both native and non-native Engl ish speakers, are required to take the department's Writing Proficiency Exam . If the results of the exam indicate that addi- tional work in written grammar and composition is needed to enable a stu- dent to perform at the level expected for this field, he or sh e wi ll be expected to take and pass one of the special studies courses, SS 500 or SS
