LOS ANGELES FILM INSTITUTE In addition to our film production courses offered on campus , Biola is able to offer a full semester of intensive schooling in film through the Los Angeles Film Studies Pro- gram of the Christian College Coalition. Students live and study in the Hollywood area for one semester. For additional information and application see Dr. Tom Nash , or make inquiry through the Department of Communication. ENGLAND SEMESTER Biota, in cooperation with the University of Sheffield, offers the opportunity for a fall term of study in the United Kingdom. Application and payment of tuition and room and board are made through Biota. The applicant must be a junior or senior student with a 3.0 GPA and must be approved by the department of the student's major, the coor- dinator of the program, and the University of Sheffield. Students who are accepted live in Sheffield university housing and take 3 or 4 courses in the regular university cur- riculum. One of the courses 1,~II be taught by a faculty mem- ber designated by Biota and will be designed for the Biota stu- dents but maybe open to other Sheffield students also. Those students majoring in biblical studies, English, and history will find programs which are most relevant to Biola's needs; how- ever, courses could also be taken in archaeology, chemistry, language and linguistics, economics, mathematics, music, psy- chology, sociology, and advanced language. Because of the nature of British higher education , students are expected to take their courses in no more than one or two departments. The programgives the student the opportunity to experi- ence the British lecture and tutorial system first-hand, as well as enjoy the unique historical and cultural environment of the British Isles. Student are given an orientation at the Uni- versity of Sheffield before starting their term of study. The faculty member designated by Biota to teach the Biota course will mentor the students while at Sheffield, providing counsel and guidance throughout the term. The students who participate in the program are expected to abide by the rules and regulations of the Univer- sity of Sheffield; in addition, they are expected to maintain Biola's code of conduct as they would on the La Mirada cam- pus. At the end of the term the University of Sheffield will forward the student's transcript to Biota where it will be interpreted in light of our American grading system. Anyone wishing additional information should apply to the Coordinator of the University of Sheffield Year Abroad Program in the English Department. OTHER STUDY TOURS Along with these regularly scheduled programs, there are often other opportunities for study and travel. For instance, during the past few years Biota has sponsored a summer study tour in the former Soviet Union. Also, Biota occasionally offers students the chance to attend foreign universities as exchange students. On occasion, students can apply for exchange programs at Yonsei University, Han Nam University,
and Seoul Women 's University in Korea as well as at Tokyo Christian University in Japan. Nursing majors frequently have special study opportunities in Alaska and Ecuador. Biota stu- dents are also eligible to apply for programs sponspored by the Christian College Coalition, such as the program at the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies in Oxford, Eng- land. For information about which travel programs are cur- rently offered, please contact the Office of Admissions. SUMMER SESSION Acontinuing Summer Session program provides students with tl1e opportunity for a greater degree of flexibility in plan- ning their total program. Students may enrich their course of study and reduce the overall time spent in school or decrease their regular course load by careful selection of Summer Se1;- sion courses. Visiting students find it refreshing to study in a different atmosphere and perhaps a different locale, and entering students find it helpful in gaining advanced standing. Work taken may be applied to botl1 the degree and the teach- ing credential programs. Instruction is offered in standard courses by the Biota faculty and capable visiting professors. Courses offered cover the areas of art, Bible, theology, history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, bio- logical science, sociology and other subjects, including edu- cation courses for teaching credential candidates. Graduate courses in theology and psychology enable graduate students to continue their programs during the summer. Credit is also available in connection with excellent foreign tours con- ducted during the summer. Tuition, room and board are lower than regular charges at private colleges; total costs are competitive with state summer school charges. See section on financial information for Summer Session tuition. Certain courses or workshops may be offered in the sum- mer that are not listed in this bulletin. Courses may be inno- vative or the content maybe in response to specialized needs or current topics. Such courses will be described in the sepa- rate Summer Session,bulletin. Requests for the Summer Session bulletin (available about March 15) and application forms for admission should be addressed to the Office of Admissions. Admission to the summer program does not presuppose or grant acceptance to the University for the regular school year. SUMMER INSTITUTE OF LINGUISTICS AT BIOLA In cooperation with the Summer Institute of Linguistics and Wycliffe Bible Translators, USA, the University offers an inten- sive program from January through May for students planning to work in cross cultural missions. The 21-unit program, avail- able for either undergraduate or graduate credit, combines five courses in descriptive linguistics and two anthropology courses. Interested students should contact the Intercultural Stud- ies Department for additional information. FOUR-WEEK SUMMER SPECIAL PROGRAM OF ELSP This is a four-week summer English program for interna- tional college students who would like to study the English
