ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS All stud ents seeking admi ss ion must demonstrate musical background and performance strengths necessa1y for successful completion of the stated curriculum. Admi ss ion into Biola Uni- versity does not guarantee admi ssion into the Music Department as a music major. A student will be admiued to the department of music after: I Mee ting of requi rements for unive rsity admi ssion 2. Compl eting a Music Depart- ment appli cati on with the required number of references suppl ied. 3. Comp leting a Music Depart- ment audition, including a bas ic musi- cianship examin ati on des igned to demonstrate university level music studyreadin ess. Aft er acce ptance and upon entrance, students will be given place- ment examinati ons and auditions in music theo1y, keyboard skills anrl per- formance. These examina tions are given for the purpose of validatin g prior study and determi ning proper placement in music courses. Specific information conce rning the content of these examinati ons and suggestions for preparation are available by writ- ing the Musi c Department offi ce. Transfer of Credit /Advanced Standing Wi th the exception of courses in music theo1y, keyboard skills, and indi- vidual performance, courses taken at other regionallyaccredited coll eges and universities in the Uni ted States wi ll be accepted on a comparable course basis. Prior study in the areas of musi c theory, keyboard skills, and individual performance will be va lidated th rough placement examinations.

Composition (49 units)

The Bac helor of Musi c degree includes, a basic core of 31 units of music, and spec ifi c degree requi re- men ts of an additional 49 units. Advanced standing may be gained through placement exam inati ons in the areas of mus ic theory, keyboard ski lls, and in dividual performance, howeve r no units of credit wi ll be allowed for waived courses. Waiver of cours es on th e bas is of placement exam ination s without comparabl e prior course credit will increase elec- tive units available. Credit for courses taken at a non- accredited college or un iversity will be granted only through placement or

Special Programs/Opportunities Ensembles The Music Department provides opportunities for experi ence in sev- eral types of vocal and instrumental ensembl es , in clud ing th e Bi ola Chorale, Chamber Music Ensembles, University Singe rs, Chamber Orches- tra, Symphoni c Winds, Jazz En sem- bl e, and Handbell Ch oir. All are open to non-music maj ors as we ll as music majors byaudition at the begin- ning of each semester. Individual per- forman ce opportuniti es are offered through weekly student recitals and junior and seni or recitals. Concert Series The Music Department conce rt seri es features outs tanding guest arti sts as well as its own widely-known faculty. Opportunities Off Campus Th e stature of Los Ange les as a music center provides exce ptional opportunities for hearing the world 's leading arti sts, as well as outstanding coll ege and church music organi za tions. Service Opportunities The Los Angeles metropolitan area furnishes many opportunities for remu- nerative sen1ce in music. There are fre- quent openings for competent organ- ists , church cho ir direc tors, solois ts, accompanists and instrumental ists. An emphas is in church music is ava il abl e within the B.A. degree in music whi ch is designed to specifica lly meet the needs of students for whom Engli sh is a second language. The emph as is is intended to address the needs of students preparing to wo rk in the fi eld of church music in multi- ethnic or international contexts. It is also intended that this emphas is wil l prepare such students for entran ce in to a graduate degree program in church music should they desire to pursue graduate work in th e field . Students electing thi s emphas is are required , in additi on to the courses listed above under B.A. requirement, to compl ete th e foll owing courses : 38 1, 382, 383, 38 4. 440 is not required in this emphasis. Bachelor of Mu.sic degrees are also offered upon completion of l11e university baccalaureate and major requi rements in l11e following areas: pe1fom1ance, compo- sition , and musiceducation.
