ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Adm ission into Bi ola University does not guarantee admission into clini- cal nursi ng. Students desiring to be admitted to the Department of Bac- ca lau reate Nursing must meet all requirements for admission to the uni- versity. Biola pre-nursing students meet- ing all requirements for admission to clinical nursing, who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and have taken at least two full-time semesters at Biola, 11~11 be given priority for admiss ion to the nursing program. Before being accepted, stu- dents must complete the prerequisite college courses with a minimum grade of "C" (2.00). These courses include anatomy, inorgani c and organic/ bi o- chemiso-y, communication (JOO, 170 or 181), English I JOA and I !OB, physiol- ogy, and psychology. Students also are required to earn a cumulative GPA of 2.80 on all pre-nursing college course work. Students 1vith a cumulative GPA of 2.50 to 2. 79 may be considered for admission on provisional stan1s if space is avai lable in the progrdlll and if there is reason to anticipate !he student wi ll be able to complete the program success- fully. Designed for transfer-challenge students. 303 Nursing Assessment of the Client -Theory (2) Implementation of nursing assessment to recogn ize problems affecting adap- tive equilibrium in the client. (C*) 303 Nursing Assessment of the Client - Clinical (1) Clinical application of nursing assess- ment with adu lt cli ents in inpati en t and community settings. To be taken concurrentlywith NURS 201 and 303- Theory. Graded on a credit/ no credit basis. Must earn at least a "C" (2.00) for credit. (C*) 320 Directed Individual Studies (1-3) Permits students to pursue special interests related to the profession of nursing. Open to clini ca l nursing majors only with written consen t of instructor. May be repeated with dif- ferem content. Maximum of six units may be taken for credit. 321 Clinical Enrichment (1-4) Opportunity for additi onal applica- tion of the nursing process in selected hea lth care se ttings . Offered Inter- term and Summer School. May be repeated with different content and written consent of instructor. Open to clinical nursing majors on ly. Graded on a credit/ no credi t basis. Prereq- uisite: Nursing 201. 340 Mental Health Nursing of the Client/Family - Theory (2) Concepts related to family centered nursing of adults with mental health problems. Focus is on application of L11e nursing process to restore adaptive equilibrium. Prerequisite: 202. (C*)

There is an additional late fee of $10 for applica- tions received after the established dead- line. Decisions regarding sn1dent accep- tance into clinical nursing are made by !he nursing faculty. Before starting clini- cal nursing, students 1vill be required to submit compl eted health fo rms and proof of current ce rtification in car- diopulmonary certification fo r health care professionals. Applicants whose educa tional and professional experi ences qualify them for advanced standing are welcome. Those in tending to challenge nursi ng courses should make an appointment with the Departmen t of Nursing as soon as accepted by the University. After Being Accepted Into Bio/a 's Nursing Program Astudent is required to have, at his own expense, a yearly physical examina- tion and specific laborato1y tests and immunizations byJune 15. Students wi ll not be pennitted in !he clinical agency 1vilhout this. Each student is assessed for liability insurance through the Univer- sity when part icipating in clinical courses. The University and cooperat- ing agencies assume no responsibili ty for illness or accidents occwTing dwing the schoo l program. A student must arrange fo r his own transportation to clinical agencies as the University does not provide u,msportation. The sen ior nursing student in communi ty health nursing must have a va lid driver's license and access to a car. Va lid CPR certificati on is required and must be renewed an nu- ally throughout the clinical nursing program. Themy and clinical must be taken concurrently in courses with a clinical component. Due to the importance of cou rse and clinical orientation, attendance is mandatory to proceed in nursing courses. A student must earn a mini- mum grade of 2.0 in microbiology, statistics and in each nursing course, and maintain a cumulative GPAof 2.0 in order to progress in nursing. Cou rs es may be repeated one time only. Students withdrawing at a failing leve l wi ll be permitted to repeat the course one time only. Stu- dents are permitted to wi thdraw from courses at a fai ling level two times only during the total clinical nursing pro-
gram. Unsafe clinical nursing prac- ti ce, regardless of GPA, is ground for dismissal from the nursing program. Students who withdraw from nursing in good standing will be readmitted on a space-ava ilable basis. Transfer- challenge students have equal access for open spaces in nursing courses. It is recommended that microbiol- ogy (Biology 282) be taken prior to Nursing of the Client/ Family I and II. Students will not be advanced to level II without microbiology. Mandatory NLN ach ievement exams wi ll be taken throughout and at the completion of the nursing program. DEGREE PROGRAM A Bachewr ofScience degree in Nursing is offered upon completion of the uni- versity baccalaureate and major require- ments . The nursing major requires the completion of: Biological Science 252, 281,282; Chemisuy 11 2 (totaling 16 sci- ence units); Nursing 201,202,204, 303, 340, 342, 344, 362, 364, 366, 441, 442, 450, 451, 452 and 460. Supporting courses: Three units of each of the fol- lowing: intercultural studies or sociol- ogy, Psychology 200 and math statisti cs. Nole: The general education require- ment for a foreign language for nursing majors is two yemJ of the same high school language orfour units ofa college language. Nursing 11w1ors are exempt from general education requirements of literature (3) and his/01)' (/our ofeight units iiquired). The annual Commitment and Pin- ningService is financed byassessing each cl inical nursing sn1dent $15 per year.
