for graduation, candidates must have completed all required cow-se work with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 and satisfactorily passed their comprehensive examinations. Non-Thesis Track ■ 5 units: prescribed ■ 15 uni ts: major area ■ 6 units: elec tive ■ comprehensive examination Students are required to take a minimum of 14 units in Th.M. courses numbered in the 800 seri es, with the remainder at the 600 and 700 levels. Up to two courses from a differe nt departm ent may be taken in the major area with the approval of the student's program adviser. ATh.M. student must carry nine (9) or more uni ts to be considered a full-time student. Those canying less than nine units are considered pan­ time students. Amaximum of six (6) units may be taken by Th.M. students in "independent study" courses. It is recommended tha t this be done in the middl e or latter portion of the program, and in any case the advance approva l of the major departmental advise r and fac ul ty member co n­ cern ed is required. G. Research Seminar All Th.M. students are required to take t11e 890 level Research Semi nar. The seminar is designed to introduce the student to research methodology empl oyed in the various biblical and theo logical disciplines. The seminar is led by facu lty representatives from each of the departments in Bibli cal and theological studi es. The seminar is a foundational part of the Th.M. programand is reserved for the Th .M. students onl y. Students maj oring in Mi ssions and lntercultural studies will be required to take CL 897 Research Seminar, CL 879 Research Design, or one of the 891 Biblical research semi­ nars in consultation 1vit11 their advisor. H. Concurrent Enrollment Option Senior Ta lbot M.Div. students who have completed 80 or more uni ts and are accepted in the Th.M. pro­ gram are permitted to take up to fo ur units of Th.M. coursework in the last semester of the Master of Divini ty pro­ gram (additional Th.M. courses may be taken in lnterterm or Summer Ses­ sion). These courses may not be cred­ ited towa rd th e M.Div. degree and must mee t all normal Th.M. stan­ dards. This option allows students who have onl y one or two courses remaining in their M.Div. program to get started on their Th.M. program wh il e fini shing their M.Div.

I. Comprehensive Examinations All candidates fo r th e Th.M. degree must pass a written compre­ hensive examinati on over the major fi eld of study. These examinations serve as a major means of evaluating the student's academic competency in the major area . Comprehensive examinations may be taken any time after completion of 18 units of Th.M. course work. Only two retakes of the examination are permitted. J. Thesis Option Students who op t to write a thesis must produce an acceptable pi ece of research evidencing a high degree of scholarly competence in the student's major. Information regarding thesis fo rm and submission deadl in es is pro­ vided in th e Th.M. Program Hand­ book and the "Thesis In formation" section of the Talbot graduate student handbook. The ori ginal and two copi es are to be presented to th e library for binding. Students who complete the thesis registration sequence (i.e. Thesis First Draft and Thesis Final Draft) without fini shing the th esis, must register for HE 899 Thesis Continuous Registra­ tion each semester unti l the th esis is complete in order to maintain degree status. Only one year fo llowing the completion of course work is normally allowed for completion of a thesis. A student may go beyond this one year period on ly by advance permission of the Graduate Committee. Such per­ mi ss ion is usuall y granted onl y in ex treme circumstances.

Out Testament and Semitics: For stu­ dents wanting to do advanced work in the hisL01y, archaeology, language, theology, and exegesis of the Old Testament. Missions and lnlercullural Studies: For students who want to empha­ size the biblical theology of missions and take advanced coursework in Missions and lntercultural Studies. Christian Thought (emphasis in Theology): For students who want to take advanced coursework in

Christian Thought with an empha­ sis in theology. TH 709 Contem­ pora1y Theology is required. ■ Ch1istian 11wught (emphasis in His-­ to1icalTheology): For students who want to take advanced coursework in Ch1istian Thought wi t11 some

promise of usefi.ilness in Ch1istian min­ isuy, exhibit exemplary and consistent Christian character and evidence sound theological beli efs in accordance with the university's doctrinal stateme nt. Additional requirements are as follows: A. Residence Requirements A minimum of two semesters in residence at Talbot is required for the Th .M. degree. 8. Transfer Credit Up to four units of Th.M.-l eve l credit above from another accredited semina1y or th eological school may be accepted toward fulfillment of Th .M. course requirements. C. Time Limit for Degree All course, examination , and the­ sis requirements must be completed with in five years, beginning on th e date of the student's first registration for Th .M. cou rses at Talbot. 0. Major Areas of Academic Study Majors in the Th.M. program are offe red in the following areas: ■ Bible Exposition: For students who want advanced training in English Bible as preparation for teaching or preaching the Scriptures. E. Program Options

The Th.M . is a 26 semester-hour program with two options for program su-ucnll'e: a thesis u-ack and a non-thesis u-ack. Students choosing the thesis u-ack wi ll complete 20 units of coursework and write a thesis for which they will be awarded 6 semester-units of credit. Stu­ dents opting for the non-thesis u-ack wi ll be required to compl ete 26 units of coursework. Theywill also be asked to submit two papers to t11e major depart­ ment which give evidence of their ability to research and write on a high acade­ mic level. The papers submitted may be the product of corn-sework. F. Program Requirements The Th.M. 891 Research Seminar (3 units) and CE 724 Advanced Meth­ ods of Educational Instruction (2 units) are required of all students, regardless of major. See the description of the major areas for ot11er courses that may be required by a specific department.
