PT 711 Advanced Sermon Preparation (2) A skill-refinement practicum in the essentials of expository preaching, including evaluation of off-campus pul­ pit ministry. Prerequisites: PT 609, 610. Elective. PT 715 Principles and Ethics of Communication (2) An explanati on of the principles of communication and how they effect learning and change. An examina­ tion of the ethical issues of persuasion such as emotiona l appeals , use of guilt, fear and personalities. Elective. PT 717-718 Research Seminar (1-2) In-depth investigation of a topic under the gu idance of the Practical Theology department using standard research procedures. Topic selection and course enro llment is by depart­ ment approval. Elective. PT 721 Pastoral Skill Development (2) Combin ing of classroom experience with field trips to jails, prisons, hospi­ tals, sanitariums and various self-help groups. Exposure to the problems of humanity and speciali sts who work with those problems. Prerequisite: PT 602. Elective. PT 724 Small Group Ministries (2) Roles of small groups in the church in providing fellowship , mutual ministq' and edification. Skills for organizing and leading groups. Ino·oduction to dynam­ ics of small group interaction. Elective. PT 725 Counseling Troubled Families (3) A compari son of positive and negative fami ly systems in Scripture, in theory and in church life. The development of a team approach to intervention , enrichment and equipping for ministry to families. Prerequisite: PT 628, 706, 707 and CE 675 or their equiva lents. Required of M.Div., (P.C.C.), (M.F.M.), M.A. (P.C.C.) and MA Min. (M.F.M. ) students. Elective. PT 726 Creative Preaching (2) An exploration of several ways to pro­ claim God'sWord such as topical, textual, inductive, dialogical, dramatic narrative, evangelistic and life situation preaching. Prerequisites: PT 609, 610. Elective. PT 730 Biblical Leadership and Management (3) The biblical basis for organizational man­ agement and leadership. Examination of the process of planning, organizing, leading and supporting from a biblical basis and made applicable to Christian service and ministry. Required of M.Div. Lingenfelter, Steffen Assistant Professor: Alexander OBJECTIVES The minister is faced with cross-cul­ tural challenges in the communi ty and congregation, is expected to provide a degree of mission vision to the congre­ gation, and will likely recn1i t people for missions. The missionary needs cross­ cultural training along with theological training. The church needs a true vision for evangelism and worldwide mission. The program of this department is designed to provide such o-aining ba,ed on Biblical principles that have been proven va luable in crosscultural min­ isny, missions, and human services. Any Talbot student may take elec­ tive courses through the School of lntercultural Studies. Students in the Master of Divinity or Master of Theol­ ogy programs with a major in missions are required to take CL 520 or 622, 503 or 702, 540, 560 or 661 , 640, and 751. Students in the Master of Divinity pro­ gram in Urban/ Multi-Ethnic Ministries are required to take CL 503 or 702, 520 or 622, 531, and 560. Students in the Master of Ministry program with an emphasis in missions, are required to take CL 540, 546, 560, 640, and 751. Students should plan to take CL 640 as early in their study program as possible. Missions majors shou ld plan to take as many electives as possible from the courses listed below. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS CL 501 Dynamics of the Religious Experience (3) A treaonent of conceptions of the super­ nan1ral, the function of religion in soci­ ety, religion and social control, the nature of religious ritual and paraphernalia, sacred places and religiouspractitioners. CL 503 Economy, Society and Values (3) The study of economic and social rela­ tions as they impact human values, with emphasi s on analyt ic tools for comparative research and cross-cu l­ tural minisn-y. Prerequisite: 300.

An examination of the biblical principles of stewardship, fund raising and financial accountability. Office and physical plant administration as well as the use of the computer will be addressed. Prerequi­ site: PT 730. Elective. PT 740 Issues & Ethics in Ministry (2) Astudy of the eth ical issues unique to the pastor, his family and the congrega­ tion. An examination of theological and psychological aspects of pastoral care, including ethical issues, network­ ing with other health care professionals, management of the practice of church discipline, and equipping of the laity for pastoral care mini stri es. Required of M.Div. , and MA (P.C.C.). PT 750 Directed Study (1-4) Reading and research in selected areas of study. PT 760 Seminar (1-3) Selected topics in the field of ministry. May be repeated with different content. PT 774 The Family of the Christian Leader (2) A cons ideration of the special and unique problems faced by vocational Christian workers and their fam ili es. Includes all phases of occupationa l Christian ministry. Elective. PT 775 Parent Education in Ministry (2) Review of the histrny of parenting, biblical injunctions and models of parenting, and cutTent research on parenting. Then the development of parent educationmodules for conferences, seminars, workshops, learning groups or preaching se1ies. PT 791-792 Field Internship (2, 2) Integration of all the disciplines of min­ isuy and seminary education. It pro­ vides supervised experience in various phases of Christian ministry. One hun­ dred hou rs of field experience each semester are evaluated in classroom interaction. Required of M.Div. (Pas­ toral and General Ministries, Christian Education) students. Prerequisites: PT 602; Compl etion of 64 hours of the M.Div. program for PT 791, PT 792. PT 802 Spiritual Conflicts and Counseling (2) A study of the conflic t between the kingdom of darkness and the king­ dom of light with an emphasis on the authority, power, protection as well as the vuln erability of the believer. The techniques of cou nse lin g the sp irituall y afflicted are also consid­ ered. Elective for Th.M. students; others by departmental permission.

A survey of the different approaches, models and attitudes for the integra­ tion of psychology and theology. Elec­ tive for Th.M. students; others by departmen ta! permission. PT 891-892 Research Seminar (3,2) Discussion and application of the central areas of Practical Theology research and related fields of study. lnsu-uction in research methodology, including the identification of a problem, the steps taken Lo resolve it, and writ ing the results. Required for the first semester of the Th.M. (P.T.) program. A second semester may be taken to con tinue research in the area of interest.
