SPY 724 Self Psychology: The Theory of Kohut (3)

STN 731 Internship in Clinical Psychology (0) Profess ional experi ence of a one year internship in a faci lity approved by the Professional Training Committee. Prerequisites: Successful completion of compr ehensi ve examin at ions, cou rse req uirements, professio nal qualifying examination , and approval of a di ssertation proposal. STN 731 or STN 732 is required . Internship fee : $1,000 per semester. STN 732 Hall-Time Internship (0) Professional experi ence of a two-year internship in a facility approved by the Professional Training Committee. Pre­ requisites: Successful completion of comprehensive examination s, course requirements, professional qualifying examination, and an approval of a dis­ sertaion proposal. STN 731 or STN 732 is required. Internship fee: $500 per semester. By permi ssion of Direc­ tor of ClinicalTraining. SPY 733 The Sell: Theological, Phi1asophical, Psychological and Cross-Cuhural Perspectives (3) Thi s course looks at philosophical , th eological, psychological, and cross­ cultural views of the nature of the self The course explores some of the bibli cal and philosophi cal terminol­ ogy. It also exp lores the historical emphasis on the self, with a foc us on its current emphasis in psychoanalytic psycho logy, and its deve lopmental aspect, and a psychological view of the true and false se lf. The western cul­ ture perspective on the self is com­ pared with other cultures. Finally, a religious perspective on the true and false self is presented. Psychotherapy laboratory Thi s series of elective courses is designed to effect a working integration of conceptual and experimental aspect1 of psychotherapy. Ph.D. students are required to take 12 units of SLB courses and Psy. D. students, 21 units. Each course includes both course work and supervised clinical experience wi thin the psychotherapy model fo ll owed in the specific course. Completion of SPY 501 , 515 and 680 or 681 and 682 or their equivalent is required before enrollment in these courses is permitted. All SLB co urses ha ve limited enrollments and require permission of the instructor.

SLB 60S Behavior Therapy (3) The observation, assessment and mod­ ification of human behavior, includ­ ing operant , responden t and social learning models . Emph as is is on supervised client interaction. Prereq­ ui site: SPY 604 and permission of instructor. Elective. SLB 613 Psychotherapy with the Adolescent (3) Tec hniques and probl ems in psy­ chotherapy with adolescents. Special attention is focused on the implications of developmental processes of adoles­ cence on treatment approaches. Prereq­ uisite: pemiission of insu-uctor. Elective. SLB 631 Psychodynamic Therapy I(3) An in-depth study of th e process of tlierapy based on psychoanalytic devel­ opmental theory and giving spec ial attention to the concep ts of transfe r­ ence, counter-transference and inter­ pretation. A lab group is included for both 631 and 632. Prerequi site: SPY 515, participation in individual train­ ing therapy and permission of instruc­ tor. Enrollment must be planned fo r both SLB 63 1and 632. Elec ti ve. SLR 632 Psychodynamic Therapy II (3) Continuation of SLB 63 1. Prerequi­ sites: SLB 631 and permission of the insu-t1ctor. Elective. SLR 641 Psychotherapy with Groups (3) The esse nti als of th e grou p psy­ chotherapy process are examined and related to curren t modalities in psy­ chotherapy and general group phe­ nomena. Elective . SLR 642 Psychotherapy with Children (3) The nature and treatment of common emotional and behavioral problems of ch il dhood fr om a psyc hoa nalyti c deve lopmental perspective. Special attention is give n to parent counse l­ ing. Prereq uisites: SPY 604, 641 and permission of instructor. Elective . SLR 671 Marriage and Family Therapy I(3) Astudyof the literature and practice of marital and family therapy. The course provid es an ove rview of various approaches to family therapy with a special emphasis on the su·uctural fam­ ily therapymodel. Application of cl ini­ cal techniques is accomplished through observation, simulations, and at least one marital or fami ly case using a team model of intervention supervision in the school clinic. Prerequisite: SPY 650 and permission of insu·uctor. Elective.

SLR 672 Marriage and Family Therapy II (3) Continuation of SLB 671 . Major consid­ eration is given to experiential and psy­ chodynamic perspectives on in te1vention witl1in a strucn1ral framework. Applica­ tion of clinical techniques is continued from the first semester usingobse1vation, simulation, and therapyexperience wii.h supe1vision. Prerequisites: SLB 671 and pe1mission of instructor. SLR 681 Special Issues in Psychodynamic Therapy I (2-3) An advanced course in psychodynamic psychotherapy dealing with issues such as impairments of the therapeutic rela­ tionship, acting out, levels and timing of interpretations and psychotherapy with individuals suffering from distur­ bances in early object relationships. Prerequisites: SLB 631 , 632 and per­ mission of instructor. Elective. SLB 682 Special Issues in Psychodynamic Therapy II (2-3) Continuation of SLB 681. Prerequi­ si te: SLB 68 I and permi ssio n of instructor. Elective. SLB 702 Principles and Practices in Case Supervision I(2-3) A semi nar in case supervision. Stu­ dents are responsibl e for supervising the professional experi ences of less adva nced students. Prerequisites: admission to doctoral studi es and per­ mission of instructor. Elective. SLR 703 Principles and Practices in Case Supervision II (2-3) Continuati on of SLB 702. Prerequi­ sites: SLB 702 and permission of instructor. Elective. SLB 70S Briel Psychotherapies (3) Models and approaches in brief in ter­ ventions with special attention to crisis inte1vention. Theorists include Mann, Sifneos, Malan and Davanloo. Prerequi­ site: penn ission of insu·uctor. Elective. SLR 706 Clinical Biofeedback (3) This course is an introduction to con­ cepts and techniques of biofeedback as applied to stress management, anxiety disorders, psychosomatic symptoms, and other psychological problems. For­ mal registration for credit is usually in the spring semester, but actual learning experiences begin in the fa ll semester to allow ample time for maste1ing the technical equipment necessa1y for use with clients. Students receive IO hours of personal biofeedback. Course size is limited and requires the advance per­ mission of the instructor.

This course focuses on the theory and clinical work of Heinz Kohut as well as other contemporary self psychology Lheo1ist1. In addition Lo discussing the place of self psychology in broader psy­ choanalytic thinking, special emphasis is placed on the cl inical application and practical relevance of this approach. Prerequisites: SPY515 and 615. SPY 726 Behavior Therapy with Children and Families (3) This course emphasizes the treatment of children and families from a behav­ ioral perspecti ve including operant, respond en t, cogniti ve and soc ial learning theory models. Graduate students must carry at least three clients during the course of the semester and wi ll be afforded the opportunity to conduct parent work­ shops in lieu of one client. Prerequi­ sites: SPY641, 680,604 (or equivalent) and completion of or current enroll­ ment in a child practicum. Required of Psy.D. with Child/ Familyemphasis. SPY 729 Alcohol & Substance Abuse (3) Diagnosis, treatment pl anning, and recove ry process for the alcoholic / addict and family members will be the focus of the class. The disease model of addictions treatment and the utilization of 12-step support groups in the u·eat­ ment of the recovering person and the fami ly members will be presented . Other compulsive di seases will be dis­ cussed such as sexual addiction, eating disorders, etc. Class lecture, spec ial speakers, and ass igned reading will be the primarymethods of instruction. SPY 730 Directed Research (1-3) Students may take special courses of study and/ or pursue research projects that they design and carry out under the guidance of a resident faculty member. Individual or small group participation in a research project in psychology must be under the supervision of a facul ty member. The student must submit an a1Tanged course permission form giving a detailed outline of the research and other learning experiences of th e course. Required courses may not be taken through Dir ec ted Researc h. Approval of faculty advisor and acade­ mic dean is required. (Elective)
