Students may also choose to focus electives in areas of spe­ cialization such as anthropol­ ogy, missiology, crosscu ltural education, Bibl e translation , lin gu istics , TESOL, church planting, crosscultural health care, urban ministries, etc. St ud ents who have not previously taken a course in cultural anthropology wi ll be required to take SCL 507 as a required elective. Students who are not pro­ fic ient in a second language wi ll also be required to take SCL 510 or 511 as a required elective. (Proficiency standards for a second language will be determined by the MA advisor in consultation with intercul­ tural studi es facu lty. See stu­ dent handbook for standards.) B. Summer Institute of Linguistics In cooperation with the Summer Institute of Linguistics and Wycl iffe Bible Translators, USA, Biola offers an intensive 18-week program for students planning to work in crosscultural mis­ sions comb inin g five courses in descriptive linguistics (SCL 505, 508, 512,514,517) taught by SIL personnel, and two anthropology courses (SCL 520, and 640) taught by Biola faculty. The 21-unit program is offered during lnterterm and Spring term. Doctor of Missio/ogy (1) Residence and Course Work The program requires a minimum of 33 units past the appropriate mas­ ter's degree, with 25 semester hours of coursework and 8 semester hours of dis­ sertation research. If a student has graduate cour ework but no master's degree, or has a mas ter's degree which does not contain the background nec­ essary for the D.Miss. program, the total program will be longer than 33 units, and this will be negotiated with the director of the program. ministry needs. Each student will select a mentor from the graduate faculty to guide his or her dissertation research. Admission into the graduate pro­ gram of the School of Intercultural Studies does not guarantee comple­ tion of the doctoral degree. The core requirements are as

(6) Field Ministry and Language Requirement All students must complete a min­ imum of three continuous years of practical missionary experience in a crosscultural (or cross-subcu ltural) setting. It is assumed that the student wi ll acquire fluency in a second lan­ guage learned during this missionary service and that this language wi ll be the language of fie ld research. (7) Admission to Candidacy Official candidacy for the doctor­ ate signifies an advanced stage in the student 's progress and is character­ ized by se lf-directed research and preparation of a dissertation under the direction of a facu lty advisor. In order to be admitted to candidacy the student must have: a. Successfullycompleted the Preliminary Faculty Interview b. Passed the comprehensive examination c. Completed the field ministry requirement cl. Received approval of the disserta­ tion proposal by the Doctoral Committee Upon reaching candidacy a stu­ dent must register for a total of eight dissertation units prior to graduation. With the consent of the doctoral advi­ sor, a student may take more or less dissertation units.. If the doctoral can­ didate has not defended the disserta­ tion by the time the eight dissertation un its are compl eted, he or she must continue to be enrolled each semester until graduation. This may be done under SCL 882 D.Miss. Continuous Enrollment Research. This enroll ­ ment carries no credit, but keeps the student's registration current. (8) Dissertation The doctoral dissertation will be based upon research conducted in the fie ld of ministry, usually over a period of six months to one year. The disser­ tation must demonstrate high attain­ ment in scholarship related to profes­ sional missiology. The dissertation topic and proposal must be approved by the candidate's advisory committee prior to beginn ing of the student 's field research . Three weeks prior to expected graduation the candidate must submit to the School of Intercu l­ tural Stud ies the original and two copies of his dissertation signed by the dissertation committee.

The final examination is an ora l defense of the dissertation before the doctoral committee and other invited professionals. (10) Graduation Requirements All students must present an acceptable dissertation , have satisfac­ torily passed their comprehensive examinations and have completed all required course work with a minimum 3.30 grade point average to qualify for graduation. Doctor of Education (1) Residence and Course Work The program requires a minimum of 60 units past the appropriate mas­ ter's degree or its equivalent, with 48 semester hours of course work and 12 semester hours of dissertation research . If a student has graduate coursework but no master's degree, or has a master 's degree which does not contain the background necessary for the Ecl.D. program, the total program will be longer than 60 units, and this will be negotiated with the director of the program. A faculty advisor will guide each student in planning a pro­ gram of courses to serve hi s or her ministry needs. Each student will select a mentor from the graduate fac­ ulty to guide his or her dissertation research. The program contains an 18 unit core requirement, plus three hours of research coursework and 12 hours of dissertation research. The remainder of the program allows the student to choose from courses across the Un iversity curriculum in order to focus on individual minisuy needs. or field research requirements. (3) Withdrawal and Readmission Procedures

A student who must drop out of school or is planning to return to field service must go through the formal withdrawal process. To return to active status the student should contact the program director and file a readmission form with the admissions office. (4) Oral Interview and Admission to Doctoral Study All students \vi ii have an interview with a faculty committee to evaluate their progress and potential for success­ ful comp let ion of the doctoral pro­ gram. The interview is scheduled after one semester in residence and the com­ pletion of at least one significant piece of written work demonstrating the stu­ dent 's skill in research writing. The results of this imerview are reported to the facu lty, which votes ei ther to admit, admit with conditions, or not to admit the student to doctoral study. (5) Comprehensive Examinations All students must pass comprehen­ sive exams cove1ing the fo llowing areas: a. Intercu ltural studies b. History and theology of mission c. Society, technology and missions d. The student's specialization. These exams are given once a year in April and serve as a major means of
