With this in view, the English department 's objectives are:

1. To mentor students in the concepts, skills and attitudes which enable trenchant literary analysis and deepen the pleasures of reading.

2 . To equip students to write and speak incisively, persuasively and creatively.

3 . To explore and appraise the ideas and ideologies literary works represent, and to appreciate the complex ways such works and their traditions arise from, reflect, and contribute to the development of culture and history. 4. To acquaint students with diverse theo retical approaches to literature and help them identify impli cit assumptions, contri­ butions and implications. s. To explore and identify how literary skills and sensibilities can prepare Christians to engage more intelligently and compas­ sionately in their worlds. Degree Program A Bachelor of Arts degree in English is offered upon completion of the university baccalaureate and English major in one of the empha­ ses which consists of 36 units, 24 of which must be upper division. A minimum grade of"C"is required in order to receive credit for any course counted toward the major.

History 305 is recommended for all English majors.

Note:

Majors ENGLISH EMPHASIS (36 UNITS)

The student is required to take English 281, American Literature I, to fulfill the general education literature requirement. The major requires: English 251,252 and 282 are prerequisite for the major and to upper division courses in the major The student must complete: English 360,370,400,451 and 452. The remaining 12 units may be completed in any of the upper division English course offerings.
