The First House I Ever Fell in Love With Renovating My Home With My Own Hands The first house that I ever loved was the first house I ever purchased on my own in West Palm Beach, Florida. It was what they called a “Cracker Box” house — a prefabricated house that was built in the late 1940s or early 1950s by Sears and Roebuck. It was only 900 square feet and had two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a Florida room that had been added on the back. When I bought it, I assumed a VA loan, which was back when you could assume a loan.

what I didn’t know to finish the projects. I’m grateful for my father teaching me such practical things. While I can do the construction by myself, I leave the plumbing and electrical tasks to the professionals. My daughter and I were very happy living in that little house, and it was a fun place to live. Although the house was small, it did have a large fenced-in backyard, where I could host a few parties. It was tiny and cozy, and my daughter and I didn’t feel like we needed anything more than that.

The house needed renovations, which I did myself, and the first thing that I needed

Currently, I’m living in a small cabin with my husband that we like to say we’ve uplifted from its original shell. We moved here from a rather large house into our cozy abode. Of course I have a barn for my horses and my husband has his work shed, which makes living in a cabin all the sweeter. All the stuff that my husband and I accumulated in our previous larger homes is now sitting in storage, and I don’t miss any of it.

to replace was the toilet. My daughter and I lived in the house and we needed a functioning bathroom. I managed to get that replaced by myself, which was hard, but I got it done. Next was the kitchen, which was about 10 feet by 10 feet. I completely gutted it — all the cabinets had to go, counters, fridge, everything! I put in all new surfaces and appliances, including fashionable tile countertops, and by the time I was done with it, the kitchen looked brand new.

When I moved from that small house in Florida, I was sad to see it go, but I was also looking forward to taking the next step in my life. I’m often reminded of that small house as there are houses very similar to that one on North Street, not far from where my firm is located. There’s a bunch of little houses in the Hundred Pines neighborhood with the same size and appeal as the one I had, and it’s neat to pass by them every now and then. Loving your home always makes the experience of living there more joyous. It doesn’t have to be your first home, or even your last, but you will treasure the first house you ever loved. You may find you love it all the more even after you have said your goodbyes. -Alysoun Eversole www.eversolelaw.com 1

I did get some help from my brother here and there. He helped me cut out a section of the wall in the kitchen that led into the Florida room, so that I could have a microwave oven. The kitchen was too small otherwise! The reason I only required a little help renovating the house was that I already knew how to do everything that needed to be done. My father was a Marine Corps Aviator but liked to build things, like furniture, on the weekends. For some reason, I was always there watching him work on his projects. When it came time for me to do it by myself, I always had an “I can do this myself,” attitude. I remembered what I learned over the years and did my homework on

Not enough to be an attorney, but I’ve always wanted to be a paralegal and part of the team. Working here has helped me learn so much and pave the way on the path I’m going down.” Holly attends TCL’s Paralegal Studies program and enjoys learning both in the classroom and with hands-on experience around Eversole Law Firm. Finding some free time for Holly can be a little tricky. “I’m usually just doing homework,” she admits. “I work in the restaurant on the weekends and I’m in the office during the week.” When she does find some time to herself, she enjoys going to the movies, visiting Savannah and Charleston, and swimming at Fripp Island beach.

The Title Abstract — Chain of Title Legal Stuff You Should Know in Beaufort County for development and sold in large chunks of acreage to wealthy northerners. Much of the remaining land was sold on the Sea Islands in 10-acre blocks or strips to freedmen who had acquired title by Head of Family Land Certificate. As the years passed, the owners who acquired a title by Head of Family Land Certificate died, and their heirs obtained ownership interests in the land through the laws of intestacy. For example, if the man who acquired title by a Head of Family Land Certificate died without having a will, one-third of the title would pass, by law, to his wife, and the remainder to his children in equal shares. When his wife died, her interest would pass to the children, and when the children died, their interests would go to their spouses and children, and so on. These lands are commonly referred to as “Heirs Property.” In the 1960s, large-scale land development began on the Sea Islands, where the post-Civil War generations lived on their small farms. Because of a lack of a chain of title in the public records as explained above, Quiet Title Actions were needed to obtain marketable title by court order. Once title was quieted, the property was sold to the developers who created many of the subdivisions that exist today. Even so, there is still a lot of heirs property in Beaufort County that requires court action if it is to ever become marketable.

A title abstract is the product of a search of the public records at the Office of

the Register of Deeds, the Clerk of Court, the Probate Court, and the Tax Assessor’s Office, which shows whether or not a piece of property has marketable

title. A marketable title means that there is an unbroken chain of title that can be traced back at least 40 years that identifies each owner of the property over time.

Beaufort County is unique, primarily because of its rich post-Civil War history. In 1861, when Federal troops occupied the area, they took over the plantations abandoned by the Confederates and set up districts under a General Order. Congress passed a Direct Tax law that placed a levy on all the abandoned property, totaling almost 131,000 acres. Approximately 77,000 acres were sold, and the remainder was reserved for government, education, and charitable purposes. The most challenging abstracting in the Beaufort area is within those 77,000 acres. Lands north and west of Beaufort were open

Did Your Workout Routine Take a Summer Vacation? Jump Back in With These Strategies

leaving an extra set of gym clothes at your office so you’ll never have an excuse not to go. 3. Make your workout an unavoidable part of your day. It’s tempting to join your coworkers for happy hour, especially when that outdoor patio is just around the block from your office. But what if it were that easy to get to the gym? Look for facilities that are on your commute, near your work, or close to home. If it’s easy to get to, you’ll be more likely to go and still have time for that drink afterward. It may take time to make your workout routine a seamless part of your life, but implementing some of these strategies will make it easier and more enjoyable. You might even find yourself looking forward to back-to-the-gym season!

With barbecues, trips to the pool, and indulging in refreshing beverages on the patio, summer is full of relaxation and fun. But those heart-pumping, muscle-building trips to the gym may have become less frequent during the warmer months. If your workout routine went on its own summer vacation, here are three strategies to get back to it. 1. Find something you like to do. Maybe part of the reason your fitness routine took a break was because you didn’t enjoy doing it. If that’s the case, re-evaluate your options. There is no superior form of exercise, and there are plenty of options to align with your preferences. If you couldn’t get enough of hiking in national parks over the summer, join a hiking group in your community. If you prefer being on a team, look for a local adult league for your favorite sport. 2. Set yourself up for success. You would go to that 5:30 p.m. boot camp class, but it’s right in the middle of your daughter’s dance practice. Getting to the gym is half the battle, so make it easier on yourself by preparing in advance. Find a facility with a schedule that easily fits yours. If you’re planning to work out in the morning, set your clothes out the night before, and choose an energetic song for your alarm. If there’s a class after work, consider
