Police warn about online extortion scam

H193149_JC

AVIS / NOTICE

The OPP is investigating two separate and unrelated extortion reports in the Eastern Ontario region. The common link between the two cases is they involve exploitation through social media. In one case, the victim began a relation- ship with someone theymet through a social media website. The suspect then claimed he was able to access intimate photos stored on the victim’s phone and threatened to forward those photos to the victim’s fam- ily and friends unless payment was made through a money transfer service. In the other case, the victim was per- suaded to perform a sexual act in front of a webcam for the suspect to watch. The victim was then told the entire scene was videotaped and that the video would go to family unless money was paid through a

transfer service. This type of extortion is known as “sextor- tion” and has become a common computer scam. Often victims are too embarrassed to report thematter to police and, instead, meet the demands of the extortionist. In most cases of extortion, the demands never stop until the victim is bankrupted and forced into alternative methods of keeping the se- cret still secret. Police urge people who use social media to be careful about who they add to their “friends” list, and also do not be fooled or persuaded into undressing or performing any intimate acts in front of a webcam. Report attempts at fraud or extortion to the police, or to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at, toll-free 1-888-495-8501.
