Christy Lefteri’s The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a profoundly human story that feels both timeless and urgently relevant. It follows Nuri, a gentle beekeeper from Aleppo, and his wife Afra, an artist who loses her sight after witnessing an unthinkable tragedy. Their perilous journey from Syria to the United Kingdom during the civil war traces not only the devastation of conflict and displacement but also the fragile terrain of memory, trauma, love, and the enduring pull of hope.
Their story echoes the experiences of countless families, including my own. My wife’s relatives left Syria decades ago in search of a better life, just as my Irish ancestors left a homeland shaken by conflict of a civil war. As Lefteri shows, fleeing war and persecution is never only a physical escape—it is a profound remaking of identity shaped by loss, courage, and the belief that renewal is possible and hope endures. The novel feels especially resonant today, with the recent toppling of the former regime in Syria and new provisional government charting hope for a better future. Recent investigations into the former regime have shown further clarity to the atrocities Syrians endured, many of which echo through Lefteri’s pages. Her time working with Syrian refugees in Greece infuses the novel with authenticity and compassion. Moving between past and present, the narrative follows Nuri and Afra through the ruins of Aleppo, treacherous smuggling routes, refugee camps, and the limbo of asylum. At its heart is Nuri’s devotion to Afra and to his beekeeping—an allegory for resilience, community, and the instinct to rebuild even after devastation. Ultimately, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a tender, haunting, and hopeful novel. It illuminates the darkness of war while celebrating the unbreakable familial bonds that carry us toward healing and renewal.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
A warm Aloha and Happy New Year to all! As I begin my term as President of The Pacific Club, I am deeply honored and privileged to serve this remarkable institution—one that has shaped generations of leaders and continues to be a cornerstone of our community. It is especially meaningful to step into this role as only the seventh woman to serve as President in our Club’s 175-year history, and to do so alongside our first woman General Manager, Amy Damon, whose leadership and expertise strengthen the Club in countless ways. Being a member of The Pacific Club is both a privilege and a great source of pride. Since our founding in 1851, The Pacific Club has stood as a place of belonging, camaraderie, and shared purpose. Every time I step through our doors, I am reminded of what makes this Club

CLUB MANAGEMENT
LOOKING AHEAD
Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!
I hope everyone is off to a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2026. This is an especially meaningful year for The Pacific Club as we celebrate our 175th anniversary, a remarkable milestone for our community. As we begin this celebratory year, I want to share some of the key initiatives underway to position the Club for continued success. The start of the year is a time of renewed alignment for our teams, and each department is setting goals to ensure that the member experience remains consistent, welcoming, and reflective of the “gracious and accommodating” hospitality in our mission statement. For 2026, our priorities include:
AMY DAMON General Manager
Departmental Dashboards - Beginning this year, our Controller, Peter Bressler, is implementing departmental dashboards to help managers better evaluate performance and set measurable goals. These dashboards will incorporate financial indicators, operational benchmarks, and member and staff satisfaction data, giving us a more complete view of how each area is performing and contributing to our overall operations. Elevating the Member Experience -We are focused on strengthening communication, improving service consistency, and enhancing programming across all departments. With recent staffing shortages, transitions and Northstar challenges, we know the member experience has felt uneven at times. Our goal is to stabilize operations, improve responsiveness, and ensure that every interaction reflects the quality our members expect. Strengthening Team Culture & Leadership - With our Core Values now well established, we are integrating them into our annual reviews in January as well as our daily operations. This includes empowering staff to make sound decisions, improving collaboration between departments, and expanding leadership development at all levels. A strong culture is essential to delivering exceptional hospitality. Financial Stewardship & Long-Range Planning - Now that our Master Plan has been adopted, we will begin updating our Reserve Study so we can assess long-term capital needs with accuracy and transparency. This work will guide ongoing discussions with our Budget & Finance Committee as we evaluate funding options and create a sustainable roadmap for the future. I am also pleased to report that we are seeing extraordinary momentum with membership growth. Our Belong to Something Timeless promotion has now surpassed 100 new member applications, underscoring the strength and appeal of our community. Welcoming new members is vital to sustaining the Club’s long-term vitality, strengthening our financial foundation, and ensuring that The Pacific Club remains vibrant for generations to come. Each month this publication lists our newest members, so if you see them at the Club, be sure to say hello and welcome them, many of our members’ lifelong friendships have begun right here at The Pacific Club. As we launch our year-long 175th anniversary celebrations, beginning with Cheers to 175 Years on January 23 and concluding with our formal gala on November 14, I look forward to celebrating alongside all of you. This is truly a once- in-a-generation moment for us.

MEMBER HIGHLIGHT On July 28, 1972, Preston and Mary Ann Lentz celebrated their wedding reception at The Pacific Club, then just 12 years into its new clubhouse. Following their ceremony at Central Union Church, guests gathered in the Main Dining Room for cocktails and local favorites. A lighthearted moment came during the bouquet toss in the garden, when the bride's bouquet landed on the roof and was retrieved from a lychee tree by Mary Ann’s younger brother. Telegrams from mainland family were read aloud, adding to the joy of the evening. Fifty years later, on July 29, 2022, the Lentz family returned to The Pacific Club, once again surrounded by loved ones. Hosted in the Card Room, the celebration featured a “then and now” photo slideshow set to Hawaiian songs and music from the 1970s, with fragrant ginger lei, hula, and a three-course dinner highlighted by a dry-aged bone-in ribeye from the Mess Steakhouse menu. When asked the secret to their long and happy marriage, they happily agree that it is saying, “Yes, dear.” I’m sure we will be busy! We are going to be featuring member highlights this year. If you have any suggestions, send photos and details and you might be the next feature!

DID YOU KNOW? We are pleased to reveal our new 175th Anniversary logo. Some of you may have already seen a sneak peek in our December Express. Note: the rst member to email me with the correct location will receive a bottle of our TPC-label Maker’s Mark. The pictogram at the top of the logo was inspired by the “Launa” sculpture by artist Nick Bleeker at our Porte Cochere, in memory of our Clubhouse architect Vladimir Ossipoff. Our designer reinterpreted the sculpture’s interlocking “P” forms into a woven, basket-like motif. This woven pattern represents the traditions and spirit of community that defines The Pacific Club. The perpendicular line through the “175” points upward, signifying our continued forward progress as we honor the past and elevate our future .

F&B TALK
A SEASON OF MAGIC, AND A YEAR OF POSSIBILITY
I’ll admit—finding the words for this article did not come easily. With the holidays in full swing, our days blur into a beautiful kind of chaos. But as I walked through the kitchen recently and felt the energy—the clatter, the focus, the unmistakable “we’ve got this” hum—I was reminded exactly what I wanted to say. What makes this Club extraordinary is not perfection. In hospitality, it rarely looks pretty behind the scenes. It can be tough, messy, and far from graceful—until suddenly, it is. It comes together. And that moment, that transformation from effort to experience, is what feels like magic. It is the dance—front and back of house, seasoned and new—moving in rhythm even when the steps change by the minute. From the moment a member arrives at valet, to the warmth of our lobby décor, to remembering someone’s favorite seat or wine, to the endless stream of emails (for which
NIKKI GIBSON F&B Director
I apologize on behalf of us all)—every detail is part of the choreography. This year reminded me so much of the ideas in one of my favorite books, Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara. His belief that exceptional experiences are built on intention, kindness, and a willingness to go above and beyond resonates deeply with me. It’s exactly the standard I want to continue fostering here: a culture where our team feels empowered, our members feel known, and our service feels heartfelt. As we prepare for an exciting milestone—our 175th anniversary in 2026—I’m energized by what’s ahead. I look forward to attending the CMAA World Conference in Anaheim this February to recharge, refine, and return with fresh inspiration for our Food & Beverage vision. Next year, we will continue to elevate systems, deepen training, strengthen teamwork, and create experiences that feel both seamless and special. To our entire staff: thank you. The magic members see is because of you—your commitment, your resilience, your grace under pressure, and your belief in the work we do together. And to our members: thank you for allowing us to create these moments for you year after year. We are honored to be part of your holidays and your everyday memories. Here’s to a remarkable season behind us, and an even more extraordinary year ahead.

PRINCESS X, PRINCESS XI AND PRINCESS XIII SIGNED BY "YUKOI", BARBARA LAI BENNETT (B.1946) As a nod to the club’s 175th anniversary and our deep connection to Princess Kailuani, it’s very fitting to explore the three uniquely historical collages that are hung on the back wall of the Cleghorn Room, comprised of images of the the Princess, hula dancers, and etchings and photographs from the 19th century. For decades these pieces have quietly hung on the wall, with no information in our archives about the artist or the acquisition of the very well-composed works. Through a bit of sleuthing, we’ve identified these as works by a Honolulu native who likely created these as commissioned pieces when she was known simply as “yukoi”. The works themselves are striking in their imagery. The unifying and ghostly image of Kaiulani as a silkscreened image taken from a period photograph, laid over the vibrant pastel color palate provides just the first juxtaposition of the loss of the monarchy in the face of the happy, colorful tourist-friendly illustrations by Eugene Savage (of Matson menu cover fame). Each of the three works focuses on Princess Kaiulani, and pairs her with some other periodic image of native Hawaiians.
PRINCESS X, mixed media on paper, 15x15"
PRINCESS XI, mixed media on paper, 15x15"
PRINCESS XIII, mixed media on paper, 15x15"
In each of the three pieces, we also see the images of photographs from the late 1800’s of Queen Lili’uokalani, hula dancers, and then in Princess XII we find an image of “A Man of the Sandwich Islands with his Helmet” by John Webber, the illustrator on Captain Cook’s ill-fated third voyage to Hawaii. Taken in context, the use of the layering techniques in these collages mirror the layering of the history of our islands, and bring us to a place of considering the changes we’ve seen over the last 175 years. These three pieces appear to have been part of a 1993 exhibition by the artist at Gallery ‘Iolani at Windward Community College of her works entitled “Fantasy Archeology”. Barbara Lai Bennett was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. She received her B.A. from UCLA in Art History in 1968 after transferring from the University of Redlands. She also took studio art classes at California State University at Los Angeles and Otis/Parsons School of Design. She has resided in Southern California all of her adult life where she has worked as a textile artist, a painter and a collage artist since the 1970s. Early in her career, she chose the nom-de-plume “yukoi” for signing of her commissioned works. Bennett shares, “my paintings and collages are inspired by the natural world, its cycles, shapes, colors, textures and its occupants. The end results are abstract for the most part but the organic connections are clear. I spent my childhood on Oahu, much of it outdoors, close to the ocean and green valleys with vibrantly colored foliage.”
10 | WWW.THEPACIFICCLUB.ORG
With respect to her artistic process, she notes “my usual way of working is to start with a vague idea which ideally evolves into a clear concept while I experiment with shapes or colors, or moving collage material around. I say to myself often “What if I do this?” There’s both chance and choice involved in the process. These past few years I’ve been repurposing older paintings and other stored materials in my studio as much as possible in the interest of sustainability. My latest work is a series of collages in which each one is constructed using two older paintings on paper, some cut up, some kept whole as a background for the cut pieces.” If you have an eagle eye, you can spot “repurposed” components of another older work from the Princess series on an image on the artist’s website. It’s quite the Easter Egg to find! Her works have been commissioned and are held in private collections such as the actor Ray Romano, Neiman-Marcus Honolulu, Kahala Mandarin Hotel, Queen’s Hospital Honolulu, Edwards Airforce Base, Luxor Hotel, FedEx, Nissan and the late Senator Robert Byrd among the most noted. Be sure to take a closer look at these works the next time you’re in the Cleghorn Room, and let the collages take you on a trip back in time.
