BEGINNING THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

JULY 7, 1918. LESSON I. John 1:35-51; Acts 16:13-34. G olden T e x t : “ He that will, let him take the water of life freely.”—Rev. 22:17. THE LESSON

13 . And on the. Sabbath we went out o f the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down and spake unto the women which resorted thither. 14 . And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller o f purple, o f the city o f Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken o f Paul. 15 . And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, I f ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she con strained us. • * ' * * 25 . And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. 26 . And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations o f the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed. 27 . One o f the best known Bible teachers in the world says that he was awakened to his need o f Jesus by a sentence in a book that he was reading, which said in substance that every soul not saved is a soul that is lost. By nature

awaking out o f his sleep; and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that, the prisoners had been fled. 28 . But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm; fo r we are all here. 29 . Then he called fo r a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 . And brought them it, and said, Sirs, what must 1 ,ao to be saved? 31 . And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shall be saved, and thy house. 32 . And they spake unto him the word o f the Lord, and to all that were in his house. 33 . And he took them the same hour o f the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. 34 . And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing, in God with all his house. every one is a sinner—Rom. 3:23; and is already under condemnation—John 3:18, Gal. 3:10; and God’s wrath abideth now upon him—John 3 :36. No man can change this by doing any good works to win God’s forgiveness and favor—Gal. 2:16; Titus 3:15 f. c. So utterly helpless is man that God says he is “ dead in trespasses and sins”
