Report focuses on paving plan for P-R Trail gŏđŏ editionap.ca

network setup in 2020 when the current lease agreement with VIA Rail ends. The trail route follows a former railway corridor and the counties could push for a renewal of the lease arrangement with the goal of linking the PR Trail with the existing recreational trail routes in the greater Ottawa and Mon- tréal regions. Also included in the report are maps showing suggested “connectors” from the trail to various villages and towns in Prescott-Russell which are not on the actual trail route. A strategic development plan could see those connectors established to provide more cycling and hiking options for users along with a promotional strategy involv- ing both regular advertising brochures along with Internet blogs and social media. Besides a designated trail development reserve fund, the report also suggested aggressive lobbying of all available senior government support funding and grants from non-profit and private sector founda- tions and other groups. L’ORIGNAL | The Prescott-Russell Trail is already one of the recreational gems in the United Counties. A recent report to counties council suggests it could be the crowning glory of the region’s tourism sector with an aggressive upgrade plan that includes paving the entire length of the trail and linking it to other existing recreational trails in Eastern Ontario and Western Québec. The MMM Group presented its final con- sultant’s report on a Regional Recreational Trail Strategic Plan (RRTS) to the United Counties of Prescott-Russell council (UCPR) during a recent meeting. Based on results of several surveys, both in-person and online, conducted during the past year, the report noted that most trail users listed paving of the entire trail along with its rights-of-way as the most urgent improvement need. Half of those surveyed also said they would use the trail even more if there were better connections with direc- tional signage along the 72-kilometre PR Trail to some of the smaller communities within the Prescott-Russell which are not part of the actual trail route. The main drawback is the cost to pave the entire trail route itself. The report esti- mates about $6.5 million for full paving of

the entire trail. Paving both the trail itself and its rights-of-way would total about $12 million. A cheaper alternative would be a million-dollar upgrade of the existing trail route, with special attention to those sec- tions most in need of improvements. The report recommends that the coun- ties start budgeting each year for trail up- grading with a goal to review the entire trail
