Optimism in Bloom Reflections on Life, Love, and Legacy This March
In my work, adopting an optimistic outlook has been transformative. It’s about seeing challenges as opportunities for growth rather than impossible obstacles. This mindset encourages resilience, boosts creative problem-solving, and develops a culture of persistence and determination. The benefits of an optimistic approach are undeniable and can lead to personal well-being and professional fulfillment. Similarly, optimism is a cornerstone for building and sustaining strong personal relationships. It teaches us the value of looking for the good in others, hoping for the best even in difficult times, and working toward positive outcomes together. This perspective strengthens bonds, deepens understanding, and nurtures a supportive and loving environment — all of which are critical as my wife and I begin to navigate the joys and challenges of parenthood. If you haven’t heard, optimism’s health benefits are equally compelling. Numerous studies have highlighted how a positive outlook can improve physical and mental health. Optimists tend to lead healthier lifestyles, manage stress more effectively, and enjoy longer lifespans. As a new father, the desire to be a healthy, active, and present parent for Tommy has only reinforced my commitment to growing and maintaining an optimistic outlook.
Becoming a parent has also provided a unique perspective on optimism, particularly in the context of legacy and the future. It’s about wanting to instill in Tommy a sense of hope, resilience, and positivity towards life. It’s about teaching him to face the world with a heart full of optimism, to appreciate the beauty in the every day, and to approach challenges with courage and a smile. “The concept of optimism, especially now, feels more pertinent than ever. As a new dad, the overwhelming mix of emotions — excitement, fear, anticipation, and hope — are the core of optimism.”
As we step into March, a month that heralds the beginning of spring and National Optimism Month, I find myself reflecting on the countless ways optimism has shaped my life, particularly in recent times. March holds a special place in my heart for more reasons than one; it’s my birthday month, and now, it takes on an even deeper significance with the arrival of our baby boy, Tommy. Named after my late father, Tommy’s arrival has been a beacon of hope and joy for our family, especially since his birthday is just four days shy of my dad’s. It’s a poignant reminder of life’s cycles and the enduring legacy of family. The concept of optimism, especially now, feels more pertinent than ever. As a new dad, the overwhelming mix of emotions — excitement, fear, anticipation, and hope — are the core of optimism. It’s this forward-looking positivity that not only helps us navigate the complexities of life but also enriches our careers, relationships, and health.
In celebrating National Optimism Month and embracing the joys and responsibilities of fatherhood, I am
reminded of the profound impact that a positive outlook can have on every facet of our lives. As I celebrate my birthday this month and cherish the gift of becoming a father, I am filled with gratitude and optimism for the journey ahead. Here’s to a life viewed through the lens of optimism for Tommy, my family, and myself. — Trent Huskey

GROW YOUR GREEN THUMB THIS SPRING A SPRING GARDENING GUIDE
Spring is in the air; the chirping birds and warm air call you outdoors. It’s the perfect time to start your garden. Even as a beginning gardener, you can find plants and flowers to bring you joy throughout the summer. Carrots and radishes are quick, easy, and grow well in most areas. Carrots are versatile veggies great for snacking and cooking; even your dogs will love them! They need to be planted early, though, as they take about three months to germinate. Radishes are cool- season vegetables you can start indoors and plant outside after the last frost. Other vegetables can be started from seeds indoors in late February to early March. Try cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, leeks, endive, and lettuce. Later, in mid to late March, you can start peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, Swiss chard, and tomatillos indoors Wait to plant your seeds and seedlings in the ground until two weeks after the last frost. Some early cold-tolerant vegetables, like cabbage, broccoli, and head lettuce, can go in the ground early to
mid-March. Heat-loving plants like peppers, okra, and eggplant that grow slowly can also be planted in March. Tomatoes are the stars of many gardens. It is best to wait until early April to plant them, though. They are like Goldilocks and prefer everything just right — not too cold or hot. We can’t talk about gardening without giving a few helpful tips for adding color. Plant hydrangea, aster, pansy, sweet peas, garden mums, and Oriental lilies in the spring to invite pollinators and provide blooming color throughout the summer. Spring bulbs, like crocus and daffodils, are the first to bloom. Sometimes, they will even bloom when there is a bit of snow on the ground. But it is best to plant bulbs in the fall so they have time to settle in their roots. A gardener’s best friend is the USDA Hardiness Zone Map. Since most states include three different growing zones, it is a handy resource to choose the best plants for your area. The website at PlantHardiness.ars.usda.gov has a wealth of information, including tips for easy maintenance. So, grab your gloves, get your seeds, and enjoy watching your garden grow!
Transform Your Space Discover the Power of Accent Walls
Accent walls are a trend that has gained momentum over the years as a popular choice for homeowners and interior designers looking to inject style into living spaces. These bold statements can transform a room from mundane to magnificent with just a splash of color, texture, or pattern. Let’s dive into why accent walls are worth considering and how they
Choosing the Right Wall Not all walls are created equal when it comes to selecting your accent. The ideal candidate is often the first wall you see upon entering a room or one that hosts a prominent architectural feature, such as a fireplace or large window. The key is to enhance the room’s existing focal points, not compete with them. Lighting also plays a crucial role; natural light can amplify the impact of your chosen wall, bringing out the richness of your chosen colors and textures. Color, Texture, and Patterns The beauty of accent walls lies in the endless possibilities. A deep, rich color can add warmth, instantly transforming the atmosphere. For a subtle approach, use a shade only slightly darker than the other walls. Textures like reclaimed wood or brick add a rustic touch, offering a tactile experience that paint alone can’t achieve.
can elevate your home décor. The Purpose of Accent Walls
Meanwhile, there are countless wallpaper styles available, so you can choose what best fits the space and your style. Tips for Success Before diving in, it’s essential to consider the overall design of your room. The accent wall should complement, not clash with, your existing décor. Test colors and materials in the space to see how they fit with the lighting throughout the day. Remember, the goal is to enhance the room’s ambiance, not overpower it.
At its core, an accent wall serves as the focal point in a room. It’s the one wall that boldly stands out, drawing the eye and anchoring the space. Whether through daring paint color, striking wallpaper, or textural elements like wood or stone, accent walls break the monotony of a room by adding depth. They’re a fantastic way to showcase your personality and style without overwhelming a room.

This Household Chemical Can Protect Your Home From Insects WD-40: BUG REPELLANT
WD-40 does just about everything. “If it moves but shouldn’t, use duct tape. If it won’t move but should, use WD-40” is practically an American proverb. It stops squeaks, cleans steel, and separates stuck objects. But it can do even more than that: Repel insects. Bugs don’t like the scent of WD-40, plus it can kill them by suffocation. Cheaper than most insecticides and infinitely more versatile, a can of WD-40 is perfect for keeping bugs out of your house. Doors and Windows Insects invade your house through every opening, including the crack in the front door. Keeping them out can be next to impossible unless you take precautions. One such safeguard is to spray WD-40 underneath the doorframe as if it were a barrier between your world and theirs. You should also spray it underneath windows and anywhere else they might come in. Roofs and Vents Insects love roofs. They can invade many nooks and crannies in your roof, such as vents and cracks, but WD-40 can help prevent it. Spray it on any points of access, including the gutter. Many gutters have hot air vents, a popular entrance for spiders. Try spraying the
soffit — where the roof overhangs — to deter wasps and other creatures from building nests. When and Where Not to Use WD-40 There are a few limitations to WD-40. It doesn’t keep out flying insects, so flies, bees, and other winged bugs can still get in.
Also, WD-40 isn’t a solution for infestations, so call a professional exterminator if that’s your situation. WD-40 is poisonous, so don’t spray it in the kitchen. The chemical is also toxic to animals, including your pets. If you have animals, only use WD-40 on surfaces they can’t access, such as window frames, but be extra wary about where your cats hang out. The Chemical for All Your Household Needs WD-40 is a surprising solution for many household challenges. It makes snow shoveling easier, cleans bird droppings, and more. If your household is a potential target for an insect invasion, a few sprays of WD-40 in key locations can help you protect the home from insects, ants, and possibly termites.
