education & employment

employment opportunities

Achieving employment is a vital step towards ending a woman's homelessness for good. We have recently had a number of Catherine House clients undertake casual, part-time and permanent full-time employment via our supported employment with the following organisations:

live your best life & plan for your future This ten-week course, supported by the City of Adelaide, fundraising and donations, is offered to women to help develop practical and personal skills, enabling them to achieve their education and employment goals. Participants of this Adult Community Education (ACE) course learn strategies in career planning, communication and problem solving, as well as developing their confidence and self-belief through exploring their skills, attributes and abilities, identifying barriers and strengths.

They learn new skills in various art mediums and techniques and become empowered through the process of creating or by sharing their art with the broader community. Clients attending Art Group build confidence through art and learn communication skills, including talking to people about their art.

FROM JANUARY - JUNE 2023

Education Grants were provided to clients, including items such as WIFI devices, driving lessons, software and more. 31 38 clients engaged with the Education & Employment Officer. 295 sessions of Community Education programs attended. 14 women attended, enrolled or registered for UniSA, TAFE, Workzone Traffic Management, White Card, First Aid or WEA courses.

Staying Safe for Women

Knowing how to protect myself from a perpetrator is a life skill I can share and show to my children and all women I meet and know. Safety is crucial for a healthy life. Catherine House also offers fortnightly courses aimed at developing skills to improve safety. This program provides women with the opportunity to learn about rights and choices, how to set safe personal boundaries and confident communication styles. Clients practice saying "no" instead of yes in scenarios where they don't want to say yes. They understand their right to safety and consent.
