South Africa is one of the few African countries where major cities have tap water that meets international drinking-water standards.

South Africa primarily uses a three- round-pin plug (Type M) with 230 V electricity. Many luxury properties are equipped with multi-socket outlets or universal adapters, but it’s always wise to carry your own adaptor for convenience and uninterrupted device charging everywhere. Electricity & Adaptors In most urban areas of South Africa the tap water is safe to drink and meets international quality standards. However, the lodges and hotels will advise whether you can drink the tap water or will supply filtered water. Drinking Water You may bring your prescription medication with you, but keep it in its original packaging, carry a copy of your prescription and bring enough for your entire trip. A small personal medical kit (pain relievers, cough drops, antihistamines) is recommended. Prescription Medication

Insider Tip:

South Africa is largely malaria-free, making it one of the most accessible safari destinations on the continent. However, some low-risk malaria areas remain in the far northeast, particularly parts of Kruger National Park, Sabi Sands, and neighboring reserves along the Mozambique and Zimbabwe borders. Transmission is generally seasonal during the summer months (October to April), when rainfall creates ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes. Before traveling, it’s always best to consult your healthcare provider or travel clinic for the most up-to-date advice and the best medication suited to you. Malaria If you’re flying via a Yellow Fever risk country, check your layover times – even a long connection can trigger the vaccination requirement. The lodges supply mosquito nets, but wearing long sleeves in the evenings and using repellent is strongly advised. Insider Tip:

Practical Travel Tips

Connectivity & Wi-Fi Most lodges, hotels, and camps in South Africa provide reliable Wi-Fi in main areas and rooms. In remote safari regions, connectivity may be limited to preserve wilderness. Mobile coverage is strong in cities and along major routes, with local SIM cards and eSIMs widely available. Money & Payments The local currency is South African Rands (ZAR). South Africa does not accept other currencies. Exchange – You can exchange money at airports, banks, and forex bureaus in towns. ATMs – Available in cities and larger towns, but not in safari areas. Credit cards – Accepted at most lodges and hotels. It is advisable to have some cash for smaller shops, stalls and some tipping.

Light Aircraft Flights Light aircraft flights link key reserves such as Sabi Sands, Madikwe, and Phinda, with the option of inter-lodge connections to reduce travel time and maximize your time on safari. These small aircraft typically carry 6 – 12 passengers and operate on a hop-on, hop-off service between lodges and regional hubs. Runways are usually gravel or grass, and flight times may vary slightly depending on routing and weather. Private charters are also available for guests seeking flexibility. Baggage Guidelines Maximum luggage weight (including photographic/filming equipment) is 20 kg/44lbs (in the hold); maximum luggage size per piece is 40 cm (16 inches) wide x 30 cm (12 inches) high x 60 cm (24 inches) long. Maximum hand luggage is 5 kg/11lbs.

Tipping Guidelines In Africa, it is custom ary – but not obligatory – to tip service staff in gratitude for good service. Tipping is usually done at the end of your safari. You are welcome to tip individual staff or place tips in the gratuity box, usually located in the main mess area. Tips for guides should be given directly to them at the end of the safari. Packing Essentials & Guidelines

W

hen traveling through South Africa, the key is to pack light, comfortable, and practical – especially if flying between safari regions on light aircraft with limited baggage allowances.

Lightweight, neutral-colored clothing is best for safari, along with a warm layer for cool mornings and evenings. In Cape Town and the Winelands, smart-casual attire is perfect for dining out or exploring the city. Don’t forget essentials such as a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable walking shoes. A light rain jacket, swimwear, and a good camera will enhance your experience. Most lodges offer laundry services, so there’s no need to over pack – leaving room for the treasures you’ll collect along the way.

Insider Tip:

Our favorite shop is the Safari Store - check them out for all available options. Most camps provide insect repellent and shareable binoculars.

15

For Keen Photographers

S

outh Africa is a photographer’s dream – a land of golden light, dramatic landscapes, and extraordinary wildlife moments. From capturing the perfect sunrise over Table

Mountain to the quiet grace of elephants in the Sabi Sands, every frame tells a story of contrast and connection. Bring a good zoom lens for safaris and a wide-angle lens for sweeping city and Winelands views. Dust protection, spare batteries, and ample memory cards are essential, especially in remote areas. For those passionate about perfecting their craft, many lodges offer specialist photographic vehicles or private guides (at additional cost) who can position you for that once-in-a-lifetime shot.

Insider Tip:

Keep your camera close at hand – the best sightings often unfold in an instant.
