We Can Help!
Have you ever popped a joint just for the satisfaction of making your friends squirm? This elementary school talent actually has its roots in a medical condition: joint hypermobility. And while it is great for getting a scream on the playground, it can also lead to some unpleasant side effects. Joint hypermobility looks impressive, and for certain athletes, like gymnasts, the increased flexibility may even be a boon. However, many people with the condition struggle with pain or frequent soft tissue injuries. If you’re one of them, the certified hand therapists at Hands for Living can help! We have proven results in helping people with hypermobility find pain relief and improve their ability to use their upper body. Our therapists will assess your condition and recommend appropriate treatment, including orthoses and upper extremity strengthening exercises. Contact our clinic today to set up an appointment with one of our certified hand therapists! What is Joint Hypermobility? Hypermobility refers to an excessive range of motion across multiple joints. It typically runs in families and is thought
to be caused by genetic changes to the collagen in our body. Collagen is the main structural protein in skin and other connective tissues throughout the body (such as your muscles, tendons, cartilage, and ligaments). People with hypermobility likely have changes in their body’s collagen that make their joints looser and more flexible. While the extra flexibility can be quite impressive, hypermobility isn’t all fun and games. Many people with the condition may experience the following symptoms: • Pain and stiffness (especially at the end of the day and after physical activity)
• Clicking joints
• Lack of proprioception (ability to sense the position of a joint)
• Joint dislocations or subluxations (partial dislocations)
• Regular soft tissue injuries (i.e., sprains and strains)
• Poor coordination

No matter what symptoms you may be experiencing, our certified hand therapist can help! We’re experts at assisting people in dealing with hypermobility in their upper extremities. When you visit us, we’ll conduct a thorough evaluation and develop the best treatment plan for your needs. How We Can Help Alleviate Your Symptoms At Hands for Living, our team of experienced and caring therapists will help you manage the difficulties of hypermobility. We’ll start with a comprehensive assessment of any pain, injury, or problems you may be having. In addition, we’ll take a thorough health history to learn more about any previous injury or condition you have dealt with and your overall health status. Finally, we’ll assess your range of motion, strength, stability, and coordination during the physical examination. We use this information to help us develop your customized treatment plan. One of the primary ways we can help is through orthoses: splints and braces used to support, align, prevent, or correct the function of the joints. We focus on the joints of your upper extremities, such as your fingers, hands, elbows, and shoulders, and custom-design each orthosis to address your specific diagnosis and joint impairment. Our team will use different devices depending on your needs. We primarily use a hand-based splint, which affects just the hand, including the palm and web space, to minimize bulk while providing adequate support to enhance your overall function. In addition to orthoses, our team will incorporate targeted hands-on techniques to decrease pain and implement suitable strengthening exercises. The hand
and upper extremities are vital for most daily activities, including work, home, and sports, so we understand how important pain management is! We’ll focus on simple exercises to strengthen the muscles surrounding the joint to provide more stability and support. Our team will also work with you on motion control and active mobilization exercises (such as shoulder rolls or wrist circles). Request an Appointment Today! At Hands for Living, our therapists achieve high levels of success due to the variety of treatment options we use, including customized orthotics and our hands-on approach to care.
