In 2018 a record crowd of more than 22,000 turned out for the opening day of The November Meeting and the annual Countryside Day. This is a firm favourite in the sporting calendar with a full card, complemented by countryside-themed activities, and this year’s raceday looks set to be as exciting as ever with a number of different activities taking place. GB’s biggest Olympic equine stars will be on parade, including double Olympic gold-winning horse Big Star and Rio Olympics star and Badminton winner Chilli Morning. A moment not to be missed sees racing legend, Sir Anthony McCoy back in the saddle aboard Olympic star Valegro in a dressage display. Last year’s seven-race card produced top quality action as the Jump season began to hit full speed. Countryside Day hosted the first cross-country chase of the campaign, with the popular J.P. McManus horse Josie’s Orders (Mark Walsh) justifying favouritism when holding off a strong finishing Fact Of The Matter (Gavin Sheehan) for the Jamie Snowden team. It was an impressive win for local trainer Fergal O’Brien in the Ballymore Novices Hurdle with Coolanly getting the better of the Henderson-trained odds on favourite, Pym (Nico De Boinville). A perfectly timed ride by Paddy Brennan saw the Flemensfirth gelding get his head in front. Aside from great racing, the off-course atmosphere was buzzing from start to finish. From the handily placed Moet & Chandon Roma Bar outside the Shopping Village, racegoers could take in the atmosphere while soaking up some swing music as The Hipcats “It’s true that all roads lead to The Festival, but The November Meeting is where the journey begins in earnest”

The feature race provided a popular winner with Gary Moore’s Baron Alco taking the top spot under his son Jamie Moore. The 8/1 shot held off the eventual 2019 Ryanair Chase victor Frodon, in a battle up the famous Cheltenham hill. A relieved trainer Gary commented after the race: “Thank goodness the owner (John Stone) talked me into running him – I almost took him out because I didn’t think the ground would suit. The Centaur is Cheltenham’s biggest indoor space with bars and live music acts playing throughout the day (free for Club/Tattersalls ticket holders), while the famous Guinness Village is also open to Club/Tattersalls ticket holders, and has yet another party buzz with live performances throughout the meeting.
