dancing into the evening with a number of classics to keep the party in full swing. Try not to think about the back to work blues and enjoy a fantastic day out with friends and family during the festive season. New Year’s Day racing in 2019 got off to a flying start with a number of future Festival winners taking to the stage. Beware The Bear kick-started the year in fine style for former champion trainer, Nicky Henderson, and jockey Jeremiah McGrath. The 7-2 shot was at the head of the action throughout the Handicap Chase for owner George Barlow. The nine-year-old gelding helped realise a long-awaited dream for his owner who had come as close as you can to tasting success at the Home of Jump Racing before being stripped of the win 40 years ago in the amateurs feature race at The Festival. George said: “It’s been an aim for ages and after being robbed all those years ago, it couldn’t be better to have a winner here on New Year’s Day.” Racing thrives on fantastic head-to- heads and rivalries and last season we were treated to a number of close fought battles between the Colin Tizzard- trained Lostintranslation and Defi Du Seuil for trainer Philip Hobbs. The duo have faced many battles to the line, including up the famous Cheltenham hill. This time round Robbie Power and

Lostintranslation took the honours, finishing clear of JP McManus’s Defi Du Seuil by one and a half lengths. The pair came up against one another again at Sandown Park in February where the tables turned and the Hobbs-trained gelding came up trumps and set the scene for what was to come in March at The Festival. Another star in the making was Aso for jockey Charlie Deutsch and Venetia Williams. The nine-year-old carried top weight in the Handicap Chase on New Year’s Day, giving the young jockey his first Cheltenham winner and a perfect start to 2019, after what had been a challenging 2018. Charlie said: “I have always had a soft spot for this horse. It’s pretty special to ride a winner here. It’s quite a local track and I grew up not too far from here.” The pair went on to put up an impressive performance in the Ryanair Chase on Day Three of The Festival to finish runner-up to Frodon and Bryony Frost in that golden hour on the Thursday.
