A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11
This week we held our Christmas Jumper day to raise money for Save the Children, if you missed it you can still donate £1 via ParentPay. On Wednesday we also enjoyed our Waldegrave Christmas lunches which were very well received by all. Throughout the week the musicians have been working hard in their Christmas rehearsals preparing for tonight’s Winter Festival performance. We look forward to en- joying their talents! Staff panto rehearsals have also been held in every spare minute of the day. Written and cast by the Year 11 House Captains and played predominantly by the Year 11 tutors, the pantomime will be performed to all the students on the last day of term to everyone’s merriment! Oh yes it will! This week you will have received your monitoring reports which will include: the externally set ‘target grade’ (the same as previously sent), your student’s mock grades as well as an updated ‘predicted grade’. These are the grades that your child’s teachers predict will be achieved at the current rate of progress and engagement in learning. In most subjects they are estimated by looking at class work, mock examination performance, attendance and engagement in learning. In January we will be hold- ing a Year 11 parents evening to discuss these grades and areas for improvement. Next week we will hold our termly Celebration Assembly to recognise their many glorious achievements. All the individual subjects nominate their winners along with form tutors as well as attendance prizes. We will also present the hotly contested tutor time quiz awards and announce the top Epraise winners. I will also be giving out certificates for all those prefects who have shown dedica- tion and consistent effort to their subjects/roles around the school. Lucky winners will be picked from a prize draw and win vouchers just in time for Christmas. We hope all the year 11 students have a wonderful Christmas break and look forward to them returning fresh and ready to go for a successful and productive 2025!
MRS ROOK, HEAD OF YEAR 11
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘The Song of Achilles’ - Madeline Miller A retelling of the Trojan War of ancient Greece, following Achilles - a Greek demigod - and Patroclus. When Achilles is forced by his father to train as a soldier, he demands that Patroclus join him as his companion. Over the years, the boys find themselves sharing a deep connection and are able to openly share their love due to the secluded nature of the mountain where they train. However, as they return to civilisation, Achilles’ father is adamant that he find a wife. Soon the Trojan War demands the aid of Achilles to lead them to victory where he finds himself reuniting with Patroclus at camp. This book beautifully explores the complexity of unconservative romance through the heartbreaking manner of a Greek tragedy. - Isla S, Year 11
