CREAT ING EASY AND ACCESS I BLE DENTAL SERV ICES What Our Offices Are Doing For You and Your Family! The team here at Elite Smiles is slowly and steadily settling in to our new building, and we’re enjoying it every day. With the entire team now under one roof, we’re so excited about working together and the benefits that brings for all of our patients. As a multispecialty office, we can provide multiple dental services for our patients without having to send them somewhere else. This is immensely beneficial for everyone who lives in the Saint Augustine community, as we can now practice every dental field you can think of. Our provided services include general dentistry, orthodontics, endodontics, pediatrics, and periodontics.

General dentistry is what you think of when you go to a dental office for an appointment. General services prevent harmful diseases before they can damage the mouth; restore teeth by removing decay and placing fillings; and ensure patients have full, bright smiles. These services are also known as preventive services, restorative services, cosmetic procedures, and overall health. Endodontists focus on the roots of our teeth, which are made up of small channels surrounded by blood vessels; nerves; and sensitive tissues, also called pulp. When an infection occurs in the tissue, it can cause pain or, in worse cases, loss of teeth. It is up to the endodontist to detect, treat, and prevent any problems that might occur in or around the roots. Pediatric dentists specialize in children’s overall oral health and development. They often ensure teeth are coming in properly, encourage proper care for the mouth, and perform annual cleanings and exams. Several months ago, we highlighted Dr.

Juliana Iral, our pediatric dentist, who takes delight in talking with our younger patients and supports them in their pursuit of a healthy smile.

Gums are as equally important as teeth, which is why periodontists are so essential. A periodontist ensures the health of the gums; diagnoses problems; prevents health issues from arising; and treats any diseases that may occur, such as gingivitis. Being a multispecialist means your entire family can come to one location for all their dental needs. All aspects of your dental appointment can now be done in one place, saving time, stress, and scheduling. Now, our patients can schedule their own cleanings and their kids’ examinations simultaneously.

I’m thrilled to provide these services in an easy and accessible way for everyone.

FIGHTING BACK AGAINST DENTAL ANXIETY Minimizing Your Stress and Improving Oral Health

INSOMNIACS UNITE 3 Free Apps to Help You Catch Those Z’s Everyone with a smartphone has heard time and time again that looking at your phone before bed is a bad idea. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “The use of electronic devices in the bedroom further disrupts the natural pattern of the sleep-wake cycle” primarily because of the blue light emitted from the screen. While most scientific data pertaining to sleep recommends you place your phone in another room overnight, those who toss and turn regardless of phone location might benefit from using technology rather than tucking it away. Here are three FREE sleep apps that might help you get to dreamland faster. PZIZZ While there are many apps that claim to help people fall asleep quicker, very few are programmed to prevent sleepers from growing bored of the same monotonous soundtracks. Pzizz combines music, sound effects, and binaural beats, and an embedded algorithm generates a slightly different track each time you use it. SNORE REPORT Many troubled sleepers who are able to fall asleep are jolted awake shortly afterward. The inability to stay asleep throughout the night can stem from a multitude of factors, but snoring tends to be the most common. The Snore Report app records through the night to detect any snoring sounds and then provides the user with an overview of the previous night’s recording, including an index to determine snore intensity. Using this app might not help you fall asleep faster, but it could offer helpful information about why you aren’t able to stay asleep. SLEEP CYCLE ALARM CLOCK Instead of setting an alarm to jolt you out of sleep at a specific time, choose a window of time to wake up with the Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock. The app will sense your sleep movements and ring an alarm when you’re in the lightest stage of sleep. This way, you’ll wake at the optimal time, feeling refreshed rather than groggy.

Being afraid to go to the dentist is a common fear shared by many Americans. According to WebMD, 9–20% of the population prefer not to go to the dentist due to anxiety. At times, this fear can escalate to a phobia, which prevents people from visiting the dentist unless it’s an emergency. DENTAL ANXIETY IMPACTS ORAL HEALTH When a person doesn’t visit the dentist regularly, oral health problems can emerge or worsen. Typically, people should visit the dentist once or twice a year, but someone with anxiety may not make an appointment for years. If a tooth is causing slight discomfort, they may decide to live with the pain rather than have it checked by a professional, which can lead to severe consequences. Going to the dentist under extreme conditions, or when forced, won’t help someone with dental anxiety; it will only make their fears worse. A patient who is anxious about a regular checkup and cleaning will be far more stressed if their dental problems require more serious treatment, such as surgery. WAYS TO REDUCE ANXIETY Overcoming dental anxiety is difficult but not impossible. There are many helpful methods people can use to become less worried about their visits to the dental office. First, one of the best things to do is talk to your dentist about your anxiety. By speaking openly about your worries, your dentist will be aware of your position and will work with you to make you feel more comfortable. Second, don’t be afraid to ask questions. The more a patient knows about their visit and what to expect, the less anxious they’ll be. Third, arrive at your appointment on time rather than early. This will shorten the amount of time you have to sit in the waiting room and mull over previous dental visits. Don’t let your dental anxiety prevent you from achieving optimal oral health. If you have any questions or want to speak to one of our dentists before scheduling an appointment, please feel free to call our office today. We will be more than happy to explain our process and what you can expect during an exam.

Did You Know These Historic Men Wore Dentures?

Thanks to novel technological advancements, dental science has come a long way since the days of fashioning toothbrushes out of bones and boar hair. Some of the most incredible inventions to enter the field in the last several decades fall within the category of cosmetic dental services. Generally, cosmetic dentistry refers to any dental procedure that enhances a patient’s teeth, gums, and overall smile. The fascinating evolution of dentistry is recognized throughout history with some of the most famous cosmetic dental patients. WASHINGTON’S (NOT) WOODEN TEETH The tall tale of George Washington's wooden chompers is as enduring as the myth that the young future president chopped down a cherry tree and came clean about his crime. It’s also just as false. According to Live Science, Washington had multiple sets of dentures made of metal alloys, ivory, and even other people’s teeth. He was wearing partial dentures in his late 30s, but by the time he was 57, the president had only one tooth left in his mouth. THE TEETH THAT ‘HELPED WIN WWII’ While most people born with a natural speech impediment make efforts to cover it up, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill believed that his lisp was a necessary part of the war effort. During wartime radio broadcasts, Churchill’s voice was Win 4 Annual Passes to Disney World! immediately recognizable. So, when he commissioned dental technician Derek Cudlipp to create his dentures, he had them designed to preserve his lisp.

‘GONE WITH THE TEETH’ Not many viewers were aware that one of their first Hollywood crushes, Clark Gable, smiled on screen with a full set of dentures. Due to a bad gum infection in 1933, Gable had to have most of his teeth removed. Rumor has it that while filming “Gone with the Wind,” his costar Vivien Leigh often complained about his foul breath, which was probably caused by his dentures. Halitosis aside, the two were apparently good friends.

Fortunately for today’s patients, dentists now have access to technology that makes cosmetic dentistry an effective and helpful reality.
