SPOTLIGHT ON SCHOOLS Goa Institute of Management has grown at a rapid pace since its foundation in the 1990s and secured joint AMBA & BGA accreditation at the turn of the year. Tim Banerjee Dhoul takes a look at its programme portfolio and its ongoing focus on developing socially sensitive business leaders
HISTORY Established in 1993, Goa Institute of Management (GIM) has grown rapidly over the past three decades. When it launched, there were just
six faculty members working with a single class of 24 students in rented premises. Today, it’s a very different story, with around 75 faculty members teaching more than 900 full-time students across six different programmes on a purpose-built campus. In addition, its alumni network is now said to have surpassed 6,000.
LOCATION
Founded in Panaji, the capital of India’s western state of Goa, GIM moved to a 50-acre
COURSES The full-time, two-year PGDM (equivalent to an MBA) was GIM’s first
campus in the nearby town of Sanquelim in 2010, accommodating more than 800 residential students. It boasts a range of recreational facilities, including courts for tennis, basketball and volleyball, as well as a football field, all of which underpin the school’s belief in the critical role of sport in holistic self-development. Goa may be India’s smallest state by area, but it punches well above its weight in the economic sphere, with the country’s largest net state domestic product per capita, according to figures from India’s Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
programme. In 2000, a part-time option was added. Specialised PGDM degrees in healthcare, big data and finance have followed in the past 10 years, alongside a hybrid study option for the flagship PGDM and a PhD programme. The school’s big data PGDM can also be pursued as a joint degree in conjunction with a master’s in business analytics from Nova School of Business and Economics, Portugal.
