Taking Christ to the Sailor Boys f LAUDE PEARSON, Superintendent of the Seamen’s Department, is praising the Lord for enlarging the field of service for his department " and reaching so many men of all nationalities this month. He says: “We praise God for the privilege of visit ing the following classes of vessels in the last year: American, British, Canadian, Panamanian, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Danzig, German, Italian, French, Aus tralian, Japanese, Dutch, and Mexican. These merchant vessels carry quite a cosmopolitan crew, and we are able to distribute Gospels and tracts in their own languages as well as deal with them personally about their relationship to Christ. “One moment we are in a captain’s quarters, sur rounded by luxury, servants and sparkling beverages. In half an hour on this very same vessel we may be talking to some poorly educated, overworked, discouraged sailor. Perhaps he is a father, with a family of children at home whom he has not seen for from one to three years. He sleeps in the room with from two to twelve other men, with only one small porthole to furnish light. “We have also been able to. visit the military men on naval vessels of the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, and Japan. While these men are sailors, the methods are quite different in reaching them. However, we give them the same message, of a Saviour who died to save them from the guilt of sin, who lives to keep them, and indwells every true believer to keep him from the power of sin, and who is the Coming One to finally save from the presence of sin. “Correspondence is being carried on with many of the naval men continually, giving Christian instruction and teaching them the ‘how’ of Christian living as well as the ‘way.’ “It was our privilege to reach the boys carrying Presi dent-elect Hoover on his South American tour, as well as five hundred others who recently left our shores. Gospels are placed in the hands of the boys, together with well- chosen tracts and a hand-signed circular letter, requesting them to open correspondence with our department relative to their Christian lives. We ask our readers to pray earn estly for every phase of the Seamen’s work.” —o— Blessings in the Shop Work T HE Shop Department has issued a very interesting .circular called “Shop Greetings,” containing pictures of some of the shop groups and some interesting informa tion regarding their work. These circulars are distribu ted from Mr. Stuchbery’s office and are inspiring reading. The evangelists in that department are kept busy almost day and night—meeting the problems of the men, visiting them in sickness and holding the many meetings that are held each week in the various shops of Los Angeles. “We are called into the homes of the men when they meet with accidents,” says Mr. Stuchbery. “We have been

called to their bedsides just before they passed away; and we have had the privilege of leading them to Christ and hearing them sing that old song:

“Oh, safe to the Rock that is higher than I, My soul in its conflicts and sorrow would fly. So sinful, so weary, Thine, Thine would I be; Thou blest Rock of ages, I’m hiding in Thee.

“We have had them come to us when they were dis couraged with life and were on the verge of committing suicide. A man came into the office recently. His body was broken, his health gone; he was tired of living a life of sin and shame. He opened his heart to us and talked for over an hour. After he got through he said, ‘Can you help me?’ I said, ‘I can’t help you personally, but I can introduce you to the One who walked the dusty roads of Galilee and met the demoniac and commanded the demons to come out of him.’ Before he left the office he had accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour and was a new creature in Him.” ; Many other men have accepted Christ this month; others have been reclaimed from a backslidden condi tion and brought back to Christ. Pray earnestly for the Shop work! Seeking th e Jews for Christ F OR over two years Mr. Cooper, head of the Jewish Department, has been writing a book. Mr. Cooper has given years of his life to Jewish evangelism and the Lord has wonderfully blessed him in that service. His book is the fruit of much study and hard work, and more than all it is the fruit of much prayer that God will use it to His glory in winning many Jews to Himself through it. Before Christmas the dedication service was held and the book sent out, many copies of it, to Jewish rabbis, doc tors, lawyers and leaders among the Jews. Over a thou sand of these books will be distributed among these men. Over 400 have already been sent out to Jews all over America. There is much prayer among people who are praying for the Jews that God will manifest Himself through this book to many an unbelieving one and that many will see Jesus as their Messiah and Saviour through the ministrations of the book. The children’s work in the Jewish department had been .without a leader for a few months and the work had not been carried on as extensively as before. In answer to prayer two splendid leaders, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Rempel, were raised up to carry on that work. At one of the children’s meetings recently there were sixteen in attendance, all of them quite large boys and girls. Mr. and Mrs. Rempel are starting several more of these children’s classes. In the last two weeks about 300 Gospels of Matthew, in the Yiddish language, were placed in homes in Boyle Heights. A number of interesting interviews were held, and eternity alone will tell the results. The workers are continuing the giving of neighbor hood lantern lectures. In one week three of these lectures
