A SHOPPING PHENOMENON

CRAZY BLACK FRIDAY FACTS

Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday for many — after all, who doesn’t enjoy some quality time spent with family and friends and a delicious meal with turkey, ham, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, casseroles, and all the fixings? Oh, and don’t forget the pies and other desserts! After another difficult year, we all have much to appreciate and give thanks for including our health, family, friends, careers, food, shelter, and the countless blessings in our lives that serve as constant reminders of positivity in our world. This year, I’m grateful for my family, friends, loved ones, and our clients. Without them, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to pursue a profession that I love and to help others. On the day following Thanksgiving, after we’ve all slept off the turkey-induced comas, we have Black Friday, one of the largest and craziest shopping days of the year — it’s the day that many get a head start on their holiday shopping lists. The day was dubbed Black Friday in the 1960s when pen and paper were used to keep the books. Sales “This year, I’m grateful for my family, friends, loved ones, and our clients. Without them, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to pursue a profession that I love and to help others.”

from this day always took the books out of the “red” and into the “black,” signaling a profit! However, things have changed a little since then. Here are some of the silliest and strangest facts about Black Friday. BLACK FRIDAY ISN’T ONLY A BUSY DAY FOR SHOPPERS … While shoppers hit the department stores earlier and earlier, and even on Thanksgiving Day now, they aren’t the only busy ones. The day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) also happens to be the busiest day of the year for plumbers! WALMART BROKE THE BLACK FRIDAY TRADITION IN 2011. In 2011, Walmart deviated from the unspoken Black Friday “rules” and opened up their stores on the evening of Thanksgiving instead of the next morning. Now, some people head out to the stores before they even eat their Thanksgiving meal as many retailers race to open earlier to make more sales. 12% OF BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPERS ARE INTOXICATED. According to a survey conducted by a popular coupon website, 12% of those navigating the stores on Black Friday have had a little too much to drink. $358 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER. On Black Friday, the average amount of money that shoppers plan to spend is $358,

with many people searching for big deals on electronics such as TVs, phones, and laptops.

SHOPPING CAN GET OUT OF HAND. Today, we all know that things can get a little hairy out there in lines waiting to enter stores — and even a little scary at times. In 2011, a woman in Walmart pepper-sprayed a crowd of people who attempted to attack her kids who were trying to purchase Xboxes. Since then, people have fought and been trampled, and arguments are known to break out. SOME STORES HAVE STARTED TO BOYCOTT THE SHOPPING DAY. While many retailers seem to open their doors earlier and earlier on Thanksgiving and force their employees to work through the holiday, other retailers are choosing to remain closed, allowing their employees to enjoy the day with family and friends. Will you be shopping and securing deals this Black Friday? If so, stay safe! From my family to you and yours, happy Thanksgiving!

IMPROVE YOUR EXISTING CUSTOMER SALES

WITH THESE 3 STRATEGIES

One of the biggest mistakes businesses can make is focusing too much on new customers or potential leads. While your business needs to attract new customers, you can’t forget your existing ones. These clients have already done business with you. They know what your business and its products can do for them. If they like the business relationship enough, they’ll even refer other people to you. That’s why it’s essential to boost your existing customer sales in addition to pursuing new leads.

START A CUSTOMER LOYALTY PROGRAM. Many companies offer their customers loyalty and reward programs — the more they shop, the more they earn. This is a great way to encourage current clients to continue shopping with you. Why would they go to a competitor for a similar product if they can earn rewards for shopping with you? Just make sure these rewards are worth your existing customers’ time, and you’ll see a boost in return sales before long. CROSS-SELL AND UPSELL YOUR PRODUCTS. You may offer merchandise considered to be one-time purchases that leave no reason for a customer to return, but that’s not necessarily the case. Try selling products that relate to their original purchase. Your company might also have products customers would buy, but they just don’t know about yet. Make sure to cover your bases, and be sure to ask if there’s anything else you can help each customer with after completing every sale.

If you want to improve your existing customer relationships and sales, try utilizing one of the following strategies.

ENGAGE WITH CURRENT CUSTOMERS OFTEN. After successfully completing a sale, reach out to your customer to ensure everything is going well with your product or service. You can address their concerns and provide excellent customer service if they are unhappy. If they are happy, they’re now aware that you care about them as a customer. They’ll be much more likely to buy from you again or even tell their friends about your company. You should also send out email marketing to your existing customers to share information about new products, services, or promotions.

Follow these tips — and you’ll be sure to see an increase in sales from referrals and previous customers as well.

UNDERSTANDING GEORGIA’S PARKED CAR DUI LAWS

Georgia police officers typically will find an individual to be in actual physical control of a vehicle if:

Did you know that it’s possible to be charged with a DUI while just simply sitting or sleeping in your parked vehicle? While most DUI arrests take place when a driver is pulled over by the police while actively driving on a public road, DUIs can still be given to drivers in parked vehicles. According to section 40-6-391 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated (OCGA), it’s against the law to be in actual physical control of your motor vehicle while: • You’re under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or a glue or an aerosol to the extent that it’s less safe to drive. • Your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is 0.08 or higher. The term “in actual physical control” is not very clearly defined in Georgia law. When police officers make this determination, they examine circumstantial evidence, looking for clues that the individual recently drove or intended to drive in the near future.

The keys are in the ignition.

• There is damage to the vehicle that leads one to believe an accident may have just taken place. • The vehicle is parked in the middle of the street. • The vehicle’s engine and/or tires are warm. • The driver has the keys in their hand in the driver’s seat. • The vehicle is in drive. • The vehicle is parked along the side of the road. For those convicted of a parked car DUI, sometimes referred to as an attempted DUI, the consequences can be extensive and serious and may include probation, driver’s license suspension, fines, jail time, community service, substance abuse counseling, and more! If you or a loved one is facing a parked car DUI charge in the state of Georgia, give us a call today. Our experienced team of professionals is here to help you get your charge reduced or dismissed!

LAUGH IT OFF

Have you ever been driving and noticed two vehicles driving extremely fast around you, appearing to be racing? The answer is likely yes because street racing is unfortunately common. Street racing is not only dangerous, but it’s also a serious traffic offense that can result in multiple penalties and is sure to damage your driving record. It should be noted that if an individual has a history of street racing on their driving record, they can be potentially disqualified from limited driving permits. Two types of street racing exist: spontaneous races and organized races. Spontaneous races are those in which two drivers pull up to each other at a red light and decide to race once the light turns green. However, organized street races will typically involve more than two vehicles and are covert in nature (cue a scene from the “Fast and Furious” movies). Both types of racing are reckless and involve going WAY over the speed limit, putting everyone on and near the roads at risk of injury or death. According to Georgia’s law, street racing is defined as using one or more cars to arrive at a given destination before another vehicle. It also involves using a vehicle to outdistance, outgain, keep another vehicle from passing, or test the physical stamina or endurance of drivers over long-distance routes. Because street racing is a serious offense, it is classified under the misdemeanor sentencing statute in the state of Georgia, which includes fines of up to $1,000, court costs, and potential license suspension. It could even mean serving time in jail! Those who are habitually charged with street racing offenses are charged much stiffer penalties. If you or someone you know has been charged with a street racing offense, our experienced and knowledgeable attorneys here at Yeargan & Kert are ready to step in and help. Give us a call today!
