779 have a reformed and beautiful world, a moral world, a world of great achieve ments, if he could have the work done without a blood atonement and without a God. He would have a Universal Brotherhood of Men; he would eliminate by scientific method, every human ill, and expel by human effort every unkind ness; he would make all men good by law, education and social uplift; he would have a world without war through a prayerless League of Nations and not by .the Holy Ghost so possessing men that the spirit of w ar is done away be cause men can not kill their fellowmen since they love them. But, Satan does not seem to realize th a t he has made these things forever impossible by his methods of planting carnality in every human b reast which, unless it is overcome by the power of the blood, will bring forth after its kind and finally bring wreck and ru in to ev ery fair Satanic prospect. If this conclusion be true, and I scarce ly see how it is avoidable, our work will not be Social Service, but simply doing Christian work; making the gospel of salvation from sin the real issue and the other incidental. For the true hearted Bible Christian there is no such thing as side stepping from his exalted station as a messenger of the Cross to th a t of world regeneration or social betterment. “Social regeneration” is a misnomer for it is an impossibility except as individ uals are regenerated through the power of a crucified Redeemer. B etter food, better clothes, and better houses do not mean a permanent uplift unless it is pre ceded by soul regeneration. Christians, will m inister as far as they are able to meet the immediate needs where people are suffering but they do not, by this mean / th a t the end is at tained but only th a t the way is afforded for the gospel to be preached to those to whom help is extended. A further proof th at this criticism is just is th a t the theory flourishes and

THE K I N G ’ S B U S I N E S S our day also transfigured by the spirit of Christian faith.” The g reat Italian scholar, Enrico Ferri, in his book “Socialism and Mod ern Science” wherein he proves th at Darwin, Spencer, Karl Marx, and Modern Socialism are all from the same root and are working to the same end, says: “God is an hypothesis of which exact science has no need. He is at the most an ‘X’ which represents, not th e un knowable as Spencer and Dubois Ray mond contend, but all th at which hu manity does not yet know. Therefore it is a variable ‘X’ which decreases in di rect ratio to the progress of the dis coveries of science. It is for this very reason th a t science and religion are in inverse ratio to each other. The one diminishes and grows weaker in the same proportion th a t the other grows stronger in its struggle against th e un known.” These quotations are true samples of the general tone of books upon this sub ject. The trouble lies in a wrong per spective. The Bible gives us our per spective which affords us a basis for reckoning which makes our conclusion eternally sure. On the other hand these quotations seem like th e misguided efforts of proud but lost souls seeking to help men from the m ire in which they themselves are consciously floundering. How pathetic the result of leadership of those whose eyes th e god of th is world has blinded! The few colossal attem pts of Satan (the first of which was in heaven, while the crowning one is yet in the future) ought to make plain to men th a t this human contrivance is prompted by the Devil whose purpose is to make the world ready for the Superman, the Anti- Christ. This monstrous system has dared to -walk into the pulpits of our churches and take its seat in the profes sors’ chairs of our Colleges and Universi ties until th e Holy Ghost has little chance to speak or work. Satan would
