Speech Day S peech Day this year was hosted on the Owen Field and was a perfect occasion after a hard year, with the whole event blessed with sunshine and blue skies. Special thanks went to Mr Tassell for creating a new band ‘The Seascapers’ who provided entertainment for the event, and to Mrs Green who brought together a group of girls to talk about Ambition. Mrs Rowe (with the help of Noah from Reception) announced the exciting news that St Lawrence College Junior School have been awarded the prestigious ‘Best Independent Co-Educational Day & Boarding School - South East England’ at the Private Education Awards 2021, hosted by LUXlife. She also took the opportunity to say a very fond farewell to four of our team, Mr Waller our sports coach, Mr Uren our Gap Tutor, Mrs Bonell from Pre-Prep and Mrs Baker from Prep. They have all done so much for the school and will be dearly missed. Congratulations went to all our children for their hard work and progress this year and a special congratulations to our Prize Winners. We are very proud of you all.

LAMDA Superstars w e are so proud of these pupils who achieved incredible results in their LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) exams this term, with many of them achieving a distinction. A huge congratulations to Farrah, Mithushan, Tara, Patrick, Alyssa, Varshini, Ava, Umaiza, Eva, Luke and Santhoss.

County Cricket Stars C ongratulations to Year 6 pupils, Umaiza and Millie, who have both been selected for Kent County Cricket Club U11 Girls Performance Squad. These are fantastic achievements and we are all so proud of them.

Art Success w ell done to all the children that were chosen to exhibit in the Thanet School Young Artist Festival at the Margate School organised by the Rotary Club. A special congratulation to Araiya who received a commendation for her collage of a jellyfish. Also, a huge congratulations to one of our Year 4 pupils who has three pieces of artwork featured in the Turner Contemporary Gallery. What an amazing achievement.

Michaelmas Term
Nativity O ur Nativity was a little different this year. As we couldn’t put on a live performance and needed to stay in our class bubbles, we took the opportunity to film the Nativity Play outside in our Forest School and barn. All the children learnt all the songs and each class took on acting out a different part of the Christmas story. With the extra surprise of Georgiana appearing as Mary on her own real donkey. We were very proud of all the children for rising to the challenge and achieving a great result.

MakingaDifference Day T his year’s Making a Difference Day was held in support of Macmillan Cancer Care. As part of the fundraising, the children were very excited to watch Mr Marsh and Mr Brown take part in a Brave the Shave. Pupils also got involved in a crazy sock day with some wacky footwear, a raffle was held, and the children were also treated to hot chocolate and cookies as part of the Macmillan Big Coffee Morning. The response was amazing and thanks to the generosity of our parents we have raised over £4,600 for Macmillan Cancer Care.

Be Internet Legends
T he children in the Prep Department were learning the skills to become Internet Legends. ‘Be Internet Legends’ is a holistic approach, teaching children to be digitally resilient and have strong digital well-being.
We want children to have healthy digital habits and leave only a positive digital footprint.
The programme of lessons teaches the children to: • Think critically and evaluate online sources. • Protect themselves from online threats, including bullies and scams. • Be sharp about sharing: what, when, and with whom. • Be kind and respectful towards other people and their privacy. • Ask for help from a parent or another trusted adult with tricky situations.

STEAM Day W ith Speed as our topic, we looked at it in a variety of ways that touched upon the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. In Prep, our artists studied motion in art and looked at how pictures can show movement using blur and by drawing figures in off balance positions. Our researchers looked at different aspects of speed and discovered some fascinating facts about nature and human achievements. Mathematicians had speed challenges to see how quick their brains could compute answers to questions and Year 6 studied how running teams manage to optimise their racing times. Engineers in all year groups built a zoetrope – a popular Victorian toy that allows a series of images to appear to move. When spun, the eye is tricked with the continuous images that are quickly revealed – their very own portable cinema. And lastly our scientists learned about the history of incredible journeys into space using rockets, before launching their own designed water rockets across the Owen field.
In Pre-Prep the children got hands-on with their toys, vehicles, ramps, and rockets, exploring speed and the forces needed to make things move.

Year 6 Activities Week
O ur Year 6 pupils enjoyed a fantastic activities week, including camping, beach trips, first aid training, prayer space and Forest School. To round off the week, they spent the day at the beach learning how to surf. What an amazing day, and a great way to celebrate the end of their time at St Lawrence College Junior School. We are so proud of all of you.

Art Enrichment Day
O ur Art Enrichment Day was on the theme, ‘Art is a response to the world around us’. Activities included responding to famous works of art and music and responding to the outdoors around us. Year 1 and 2 became nature artists for the day. First, they learnt about the artist Andy Goldsworthy and saw how he worked in a natural landscape using natural materials to create incredible sculptures. After that, they visited the Forest School, and it was wonderful to see children applying their learning to create natural, creative, and beautiful artwork of their own.

Nature Studies and Forest School T his summer, in response to the pandemic, we launched a Nature Studies curriculum. The aim of our Nature Studies lessons was to create a sense of ‘awe and wonder’ at our natural world. The lessons ran alongside Forest School, which gave children the opportunity to learn practical skills for the outdoors and an appreciation of the natural world. Each Nature Studies lesson incorporated an appreciation of how the natural environment can enhance a sense of wellbeing and how we can work effectively together in local communities to create sustainable environments. Topics include understanding nature safely, tree explorers, birds, clouds, grass and insects, animal tracks and soils, small mammals, plants and flowers and pond life. We also marked Earth Day this year with a day of exploring our senses, crafts and thinking about our planet.

Sports Days
P re-Prep Sports Day was a lovely afternoon. The children from Nursery to Year 2 began by being able to demonstrate a range of different skills in the ‘potted sports’ events, and then take part in some healthy competition with a series of races for each class. It was great to see so many smiley faces and to hear lots of cheering and a great sporting ethos. Well done to everyone. Pre-Prep Sports Day

Prep Sports Day
P rep Sports Day this year was held on Friday 25th of June. It had been postponed due to poor weather earlier in the month but luckily the overcast sky didn’t dampen the day. It was an action-packed day with 50 running races in total. Prior to the track events we had collated all the data from our field events. Sutton were in the lead by just 10 points, closely followed by Fiske and then Waymouth. The throwing and jumping events had been another huge success and a couple of school records broken for good measure. Elijah Patterson and Farrah Dickinson both set new records for the U9s javelin. From race one to race fifty it was non-stop action. Parents and family members were able to watch the event and cheered all the competitors on. There were many stand out performances throughout the event but there were two athletes who received the Victor and Victrix Ludorum. Oliver Birmingham and Umaiza Malik both represented their houses incredibly well and were worthy winners. Umaiza won the high jump and Oliver the long jump. For the first time we gave the Year 3 and 4 athletes a chance to run in a relay race. We created the first ever 5x50 metre and it was superb, Fiske andWaymouth were out in front going round the final bend before Sutton came through about 20 metres away from the line and took the win. Well done to Sutton. In the highly anticipated 4x100 metre relay and with the winner likely taking the overall Sports Day the Year 5 and 6 athletes took to the start line. It was a close race that could have gone either way. However, it was Fiske that came out on top. With the final scores in we went to the overall winners for the day.
In third place Waymouth with 519 points, in second Sutton with 635 points and the winners were Fiske with 643 points. It doesn’t get much closer than that.

T his term’s STEAM Day was all about flight, from windmills and kites to paper aeroplanes and bird art, we had great day exploring and experimenting. The highlight was definitely the RAF flight simulators. STEAM DAY

Pre-Prep Celebration Assembly
P re-Prep had a chance to celebrate everyone’s achievements this year at their own celebration assembly. All the children were rewarded with a book and certificate for all their hard work this year.

Music
T his year has seen the Junior Music department busy despite continuing Covid restrictions with many online instrumental lessons delivered via zoom to our pupils to enable them to continue their learning from home. In March we had a Cartoon Music online enrichment day where our pupils learned how to create a soundtrack to a short cartoon clip, creating ideas to the very first cartoon with synchronized sound – the Mickey Mouse classic Steamboat Willie which made Mickey famous. The children also discovered the meaning of ‘hitpoints’, ‘Mickey Mousing’ and the brilliance of composer Scott Bradley and of how he changed cartoon music forever by persuading the studios to create their animations to his music rather than the other way round. The children then had opportunity to create their own original storyboards and ideas. We have seen the appointment of 3 fantastic new tutors in the Junior music department: Harpist Miss Tamara Young - a highly experienced musician who has performed with many of the U.K’s top orchestras including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra; she is a tutor at Trinity Laban Conservatoire and will soon accompany the Northern Ballet’s production of Swan Lake; Pianist Mr David Richard – who made his Parisian debut with the Hector Berlioz Orchestra performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue before performing all over the world; now teaching Piano in the SLC Junior department, he is a tutor at London’s Royal Academy and is an examiner for Trinity College,

London; and Guitarist Mr Dan Smith - a dedicated musician who teaches Classical, Acoustic and Electric with a wealth of experience.
Wonderful Guitar and Harp demonstrations by both Mr Smith and Miss Young respectively have led to 7 committed new Junior harpists with 6 new Year 2 pupils taking up introductory offers and 17 new Guitarists in the Junior school taking up Guitar group lessons this term.
I will also soon be announcing the appointment of a new Brass tutor with a view of building up our Junior players and a thriving Brass department.
We currently have 61 pupils taking instrumental lessons in the Junior school made up of 7 Violinists, 32 Pianists, 4 Guitarists, 2 Flutes, 2 Clarinets, 1 Alto Sax, 7 Harpists, 2 Cellists, 4 taking singing lessons with 8 taking Drum lessons. Several of our pupils also take instrumental lessons outside of school including our talented Year 6 Trumpeter – Kit Perdeaux, who is currently working towards his Grade 3. Our Exam results have continued to be strong with the astonishing achievements of Irene Dho who gained her Grade 8 Violin and Grade 6 Piano and we have also seen excellent results from Rufus Tassell who achieved both his Grade 4 singing and Grade 2 Piano with distinction; Poppy Leu Wilson and Oliver Birmingham have also both achieved their Grade 1 Piano this year and we have 4 Violinists taking their Grade 1 this term. Due to Covid and current restrictions I have been running a Year 5/6 Choir bubble of 27 children with the hope that the full Choir squad of 67 pupils can resume in September. It was a joy to see them performing at Speech Day alongside our wonderful pre-prep pupils. Finally, a new wind ensemble started this term led by our woodwind tutor Mrs Faux Bowyer to run alongside our Orchestra, String ensemble and Music theory stretch sessions with plans in the pipeline for a new Brass ensemble as soon as we have enough players. Sport
Boys’ Games T his year was a challenging year for everyone. We were unable to have sporting fixtures before the summer, therefore we needed to be creative with our Games sessions. We continued to train hard in Football, Rugby and Hockey and were pleased to see lots of improvement from our boys throughout the Michaelmas term. We are excited to see how they will performnext year when hopefully we are back to a full fixtures calendar. We did have our house matches and as always it was fiercely competitive. In Football, Waymouth came out on top and took the trophy. In Rugby, it was Waymouth again who took the trophy, but Sutton and Fiske gave them a run for their money. Cricket was a much closer this year, with all houses in with a chance, but it was Sutton who came out victorious. Amongst the four traditional sportswe alsohadBasketball, Dodgeball and Baseball tournaments. The pupils loved this and showed just how versatile they are. This year has been all about adaptability and flexibility. Our pupils have coped incredibly well and should be recognised for this over a very difficult year. In Cricket this summer, we managed to have boys and girls playing mixed fixtures across all year groups for the first time which was a positive step forward. It had been over 14 months since our last school fixtures and there was much anticipation. Throughout the summer term all our teams were made up of boys and girls and all training sessions took place together. There was a strong sense of community in the group and everyone supported one another. There were several cancellations leading up to the first matches. Our U9s in particular were very unfortunate to have all except one match cancelled. However on the 5th May we played our first home game against St Faith’s. All teams played softball for this match to give everyone the opportunity to get back into match play.
U11B/C won both their games but by less than 5 runs in both. Both these matches were very competitive and came down to the final over. Thank you to St Faith’s for starting the season. Our next match was on the 19th May and was a close fought battle with the Kirby U12A squad. It proved to be an absolute nail biter with some excellent performances from both sides. It all came down to the final over and the final ball. In the end finishing with a draw. Junior School U11A 124 vs Kirby U12A 124. The next match was on the 9th June and was a home fixture against Junior King’s. Again we had three brilliant matches. Our U11B team fought valiantly and were narrowly beaten by a very good bowling side. U11B 252 vs 270 JKS. The U11C again with an almost identical score were beaten by a good King’s side. U11C 251 vs 269 JKS. However, we were able to get one back with our U11A hardball side who won with an impressive score. U11A 140 vs 57 JKS. Our opening batters Afraz Malik and Connor Grantham-Stevens put on an impressive start with Afraz retiring on 50 not out. There was a fantastic mix of wicket takers with Lexie Durrant seeing off the last of the batters. Our one and only U9s cricket match was against Wellesley House on the 17th June. We were lucky to have some good weather and set off to our away match. Wellesley House were very good, particularly their bowling and were able to take all three victories. All our players came back with smiles and said they had really enjoyed it which was superb to hear. The final U11 game of the season was againstWellesley House on the 23rd of June. It certainly did not disappoint. The U11B and U11C lost in two closely fought matches. The U11B lost by just 3 runs. Final score U11B 254 vs 257 Wellesley House. Despite these two losses the U11A team managed to win a thrilling match away from home. SLC were all out for 77 and knew they had a challenge ahead. The one thing this group has is a real

belief in themselves and each other. They knew they needed to bowl test the stumps as the pitch was keeping the ball low, they listened to advice and went out with the bit between their teeth and pulled off an impressive victory, bowlingWellesley House all out for 58. Special mention goes to Didi and Kit. Kit kept wicket very well and kept the extras down and Didi took two brilliant wickets. There was also some exceptional fielding, it just shows how important the whole team is in a victory like this. Overall, it was an unbeaten season for our U11 hardball team. Our Captain Umaiza Malik lead the team brilliantly with positivity and resilience with her fellow Kent player Millie Foster alongside her. The whole team were supported and brought on by each other. This was an exceptional season. Mr J Marsh Girls’ Games What an extraordinary year. Having been unable to arrange fixtures due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Girls Games looked different to normal years. The academic year began in September with restrictions in place meaning year groups could not share equipment and staff had to wear masks around the school. Nevertheless, the
dedication of the Games staff ensured a full and varied season as is expected at SLC. In conjunction with Senior School staff, our U9 girls had dedicated and expertly taught sessions with Sarah Kerly – as the previous year had also been interrupted, most of these children had missed out on fixtures with other schools. Each week, building up from little or no experience, our girls became increasingly confident and proficient in their practice. By the end of the term, we watched mini games and tournaments being enjoyed by the majority. The girls will now be prepared and in a position to take on the opposition at schools local to us during the next academic year. Having had experience of hockey from previous years, the U11s were able to play in larger game formats and each Wednesday, ‘Match Day’, they played in 7 v 7 tournaments amongst themselves. This brought out their competitive spirit, teamwork, interaction and a great sporting ethos. Watching our children adapt and cope with an unprecedented situation, demonstrating resilience and seeing them at play where they can release some of the stresses of the situation, makes me feel extremely proud. I just hope that they never have to relive this. Hopefully, their next hockey seasonwill be back to‘normal’.

Lindsey welcomed hundreds of families to our school over the years as our most caring and professional Registrar, we will miss her friendly outlook and wish her all the best in her new role for KCC. LINDSEY HARRIS
Stan has been a fantastic coach, his passion being for football, but his coaching ability stretching across all our sports. Stan was able to lead the children in a very positive, inclusive and encouraging way, ensuring each one developed their sporting skill and confidence. STAN WALLER
Miss Timcke was a fantastically loyal and passionate teacher. She planned each lesson meticulously, ensuring the learning outcomes were met, whilst motivating the children to produce their best work. Miss Timcke has moved on to a new role with KCC and we will miss her as a Teacher, and as a colleague. We’ll also miss her creative inspiration for our Drama shows. STEFF TIMCKE
Michael and Tash were our wonderful Gap Tutors this year. They coped amazingly with the challenges of lockdown, keeping our Boarding Family cheerful, busy and learning. They both had some time with us outside of lockdown where they were able to show just how great they were at coaching sports and provide outstanding levels of pastoral care for the children. Suzanne was an outstanding teacher who was greatly admired for her professionalism and excellence in the classroom. Suzanne brought with her a wealth of experience from having taught in Germany and was adept at sharing her own good practice with colleagues. SUZANNE HEPPELER
Over the years Zoe has worked at St Lawrence College Junior School as both a much loved Teacher and SENDCo. Zoe is widely regarded as the most caring Teacher and the children always knew that they were with someone they could trust and feel safe with. This warmth enabled her to ensure every child in the school made progress both academically and socially. ZOE BONELL
Sarah was a member of the JS teaching team for 14 years. She has been an outstanding Teacher, deeply loyal and highly professional. We really appreciated Sarah’s excellence both in the classroom and when leading the Girls’ Games. Sarah was a true team player, with a strong sense of fairness and a wonderful commitment to ensuring the girls she taught enjoyed sport. Sarah was a mentor to numerous staff over the years and so her good practice continues to shine at our school. SARAH BAKER
Jennifer was a wonderful teacher whom we all admired. Jennifer was able to create a calm, focussed learning environment in which every child felt valued and confident. Jennifer taught my own children several years ago and I therefore know from first-hand experience what a difference she makes to children’s learning. The children in her class always felt proud to be part of Mrs Scopes’ class and when they reminisce they continue to speak very fondly of her.
